Edit. The following intro is a bit old. I unfortunately ended my long term relationship after nearly ten years. Just couldn't be worked out. I got the house and the dogs and am relatively happy now. I finished my online RN to BSN program and am a genuine college graduate at the age of 48!!! Woot!
Edit #2 - I finally reached the ripe old age of 50 and am feeling fabulous! I always get the "you don't look 50" thing, and I attribute that to a healthy diet and lifestyle.
I deleted my Myspace page. I do have Facebook and love to have vegwebbers for friends. You can private message me and I'll give you my name. Or you can find me on the vegweb fan page.
Edit #3 - Finally went vegan. The last couple of years, I've been slowly getting there, replacing household and personal products with vegan items such as vegan soaps, candles, cleaners. I've bought vegan shoes, belts and wallets. I'm loving it! Decided to let my hair go naturally grey instead of coloring it so I don't get the "you don't look 50" thing as much anymore. LOL I now have a desk job in the admit-transfer center and hate it hate it hate. I just can't be stuck behind a desk, and I'm the lookout for something else.
Edit #4 - Found a position at the hospital I currnetly work on an ortho floor. I think I'll like returning to the bedside and not a desk job. w00t
It's been a while and I thought it might be nice to for everyone who posts here to tell a little about yourself. I took a little sabbatical from this site (went back to eating meat for two years..........bleech), but lurked from time to time, but have been a part of this site for gee, can it be 8 or more years???? But I don't know a lot of you.
I am a nurse. I am a male. (yes, a person who will remain nameless called me a "she".) I am gay. I've been in a monogamous relationship for the last nine years with a great guy who now travels a lot. I was an ovo-lacto veg*n for about 12 years before slipping, I plead insanity.
I'm currently in an online program to go from an ADN RN to BSN RN and hope to finally graduate from college at the age of 48 next year.

Well, I've been "lurking" on vegweb for quite some time now, but haven't taken to the message board until recently.
I'm 19, female, bi, from L.A. I grew up here, went to college for a year in upstate New York (and subsequently become a little peeved when people ask me how the City was. ::) ), came back, worked full-time at Trader Joe's for a semester, and now go to UC Merced (in the central valley). L.A.'s still my primary residence, and regardless of how plastic my east coast buddies think we are, and how non-specifically despicable the rest of California thinks we are, I'll still stand up for L.A.... well, at least the people, anyway...
(As a result I've always been a spoiled vegan. I can walk to three Trader Joe's and two Whole Foods comfortably, and I'm surrounded by a wealth of ethnic groceries. But I still can't find barley flour... ??? )
I've always had a close relationship with animals, and always felt this kind of duty to stand up for those I saw as abused... and I saw a lot of animals as being abused. I was particularly close with a cat I "got" when I was 6, and when he died two years later I became a mighty serious little kid. I went vegetarian when I was 10 (despite my parents' wishes otherwise), which seems to have caused me to go from being an obese kid to just chubby ('course, that wasn't the point). At that point I had heard of veganism, but thought it was a little crazy. Two years later, I find myself vegan (huh.), and I started cooking (my mom didn't want to attempt vegan food). When I started high school, I started doing animal rights activism (including some crazy protests... ::) ), and have been known as That Vegan Chick to my peers since. I'm always "The Vegan," even if I'm not the only one... Not sure what I did to earn my notoriety ;D
I'm majoring in bio now and studying to get in to vet school (...eventually...). I've got a non-veg boyfriend I've been with for five years now, and needless to say he is now quite used to tofu and whole wheat everything ;D He doesn't cook, I love to cook, which is great because it meas he eats vegan most of the time... I have no plans regarding human offspring, but I currently function as a surrogate mother to two felines, Toby and Lucy. I have a history of raising incredibly well-adjusted cats. (don't ask me what that means. I'm not sure...)
I frequent vegweb, though I constantly struggle to use my cookbooks first instead of browsing the strange, creative, fun recipes on here. Vegweb usually wins.
Among my friends and family, I have a small following of fans (of my cooking). I plan to build my clientèle by getting Vegan Cupcakes Take Over The World this summer :D

;D You're the first person I've know who goes to UCM. Do they ever mention the vernal pool controversy in your biology classes? They destroyed vernal pools (i.e., endangered species habitat) to build the campus.

I like the central valley. I think it's because so many "pull yourself up by your bootstraps" type of people live there. I grew up just outside of Yosemite. Yeah, the vernal pools are the annual subject of the Earth Day festival - subsequently named the "Fairy Shrimp Festival" (the teeny fellows who would perish should those pools be destroyed). But the way I heard it was that the pools weren't destroyed, but they were going to be until the city/country/state/someone made them stop their construction plans, and now the school's p*ssed because they have to change around their plans (poor them. It's not like we've got enough students yet to build anyway ::) ).
I did not take the NorCal/SoCal rivalry very seriously until going to UCM. But for untold though undeniably just reasons, we totally suck. I think it's mostly because of water, secondly because we just suck. Haha. Anyway, the way I see it is, if the Central Valley didn't waste so much water on animal agriculture, that would be more we could steal! Mwahahaha. (No one else laughs at that joke when I'm in Merced.)
I don't think I ever replied here, so here goes my (non-)bio:
My name is Anna and I am 23 years old. I was born in Germany and moved to the US 7 years ago. I lived with my parents in the suburbs of Seattle for a while before going to college. Since then I've lived east of the cascades, back home for a while, and now in the South Puget Sound. I've spent way too much time in college already, but hopefully I'll be getting my BS in a year, and head of to veterinary school.
When I first went "vegetarian" (I think I was 15) I knew no one who had been one or was one at the time so I had no resources available (and no internet back then). So while calling myself a vegetarian, I would eat things with non-veggie broth or bacon bits, just no "big meat." I would also eat seafood. I stopped the whole little-bits-of-meat-are-ok thing shortly after, but stayed a "vegetarian pescetarian" until my first year in college. About 6 months later I started transitioning to veganism (phasing out eggs, gelatin, obvious dairy, hidden dairy, honey, and animal products in non-food products, in that order) until I was completely vegan by my own definition on June 13th 2003.
My parents still think it's a phase.
Other things about myself: I'm such a cat lover you could call it a fetish, my friends call me a "hippy," I am a runner, I am a biology nerd (and science in general), I love to cook (especially starting this year when I realized that even though I had been a member of VegWeb since 2003 according to my profile, I had never really taken advantage of the resource,and it took off from there), I consider myself a buddhist, I'm a minimalist, especially when it serves to protect the environment, ... I think that's it.
I'm just going to add this post b/c a lot of us posted similar stuff on similar posts a few months ago. There's one or 2 more like this going back from months ago. If I came across then, I'll add them as well:

Ok Dave. I know you are an "angry vegan" and I'm not, but I love you to death. I'm a drummer also, and I look up to you. You're doing what I didn't (as far as drumming goes). I'm happy playing drums in my little drum room (a bedroom that I transformed into a music room). But I wanted to do more. I played in local bands, but didn't go far. I quit playing for a few years and recently got back into it a couple of years ago. You rock. Keep rockin, dude.

Thanks for your kind words which I found quite humbling to say the least. I'm just glad to hear that you still play in your little drum room and have never lost the passion for it. That is really all the matters. From the first time I ever held two pieces of wood in my hand and discovered I could make music with them, I just wanted to do that....make music. I did not approach music as way to make money, or for fame (I'm so not famous), or any other reason then to just make music and have a creative outlet for what I heard in my head and felt within me. There are so many that decide when they get to a certain age to just give it up. That never makes sense to me....so you keep doing that....playing drums, creating, and making music....that, in it's simplest form, is what it is all about, and again really all that matters. So glad you are still playing....never stop doing just that.

Really cool thread. My name is Susan and I'm 32 years old and a big disappointment to my mother because I'm neither married nor have children. lol Recently she has taken to hinting that it's ok if I have kids before marrying. She just wants those babies to hold! I'm a fraternal twin but my sister and I look so much alike that people assume we are identical. Even with me being 4 inches taller. My twin and older sister used to say I was the "bonus baby from the black lagoon" and born in a bed pan because my mother didn't know she was having twins until the delivery table. Also, I will be eternally carded because as I quote "you still look like you're 16". My twin and I can talk each other into just about anything. Who knew having pink hair could be so fun! One day I will settle down and act like an "adult" but so far I'm having too much fun.
I used to work in accounting but 3 years ago quit to go back to school. I'm an international studies major and also take classes in Spanish, Russian, German and French. The russian is especially special to me since my family origanally came from the Ukraine. My older relatives still speak it but the younger generations have let it fade. I love to travel but am a nervous flyer. lol Weird I know.
I love to volunteer and do so at the local veterans hospital. My family is USMC on one side and Army on the other and I would have been career Army if scoliosis hadn't kept me out. Plus, the stories that the veterans tell are amazing.
I became a vegetarian at 14 after watching a meat processing video in home-ec class (Yuck!) and I think a vegan about 4 years ago. Hard to remember it just seems like I've always been one. I stumbled onto vegweb while looking for a recipe and I'd have to look at my profile to see when that was. I don't post very often but love to read what everyone else writes.

Hi. Welcome aboard. Neither my sister, age 38, nor I, age 35, have kids. We're the only two children, so my mom has taken up crocheting baby blankets for my maybe distant cousin in Finland.

I am 18 and live in the UP, the rabbit-like shape of Michigan above the mitten shaped Lower Peninsula. I went lacto-ovo vegetarian 2 months ago after learning about Buddhism. Veg*nism is the least harmful way of life (IMHO) and that is what my goal in life is, if nothing else. :) I found VegWeb in my search for learning more about vegetarianism and have used it to discover more about veg*nism and other people and life styles (It's amazing how diverse everyone is!!!) Here, most people have similiar backgrounds and beliefs and tend to stay in the same mind tracks. My family is omni (my dad will practically refuse to have a meal without meat or animal products :'( ) and is non-denominatial Christian (The Bible in literal meaning).
I enjoy reading, am a cat lover for life and am a workaholic. College soon and Hopefully, that will open new doors into veganism, the ultimate dietary goal! ;D

my name is frances, i'm a couple weeks shy of 21. up until a few weeks ago i was going to school for a bachelor's in astrophysics. i kind of realised that it was making me miserable, so i dropped my two physics courses and now i'm looking into a few different humanities paths of study. I am the treasure-keeper of my school's democrat club, which is great.
i became vegetarian at the beginning of this year because i realized i couldn't call myself an environmentalist if i didn't. i moved on to a vegan diet about three months ago, and i love it. teh more i learn about the different philosophies behind veganism the more i love it.

What's "screamo"? Never heard of that. Then again I'm getting pretty out of the loop with music these days. Sometimes that happens as you get older!!

It is so interesting to read all your biographies! :) My name is Susanne and I am a 23-year-old German graduate student married to an American. Currently, we are living in Germany and I am on my way to complete my master’s degree in English literature, cultural anthropology and Arabic studies.
My husband and I decided to become Vegetarian at some point last year, but gave it up after a trial period due to family pressure. This time around, we have been much better prepared for the life style change and enjoy every minute of it. It is so much fun to discover all the different kinds of food and try something new almost everyday! We have now reached the point where we don’t crave meat anymore and start to become disgusted by the thought of it. Our main motivation for becoming Vegetarian are health and moral reasons. Vegweb has been very helpful providing us with awesome recipes. Sometimes, it can be a little tricky to find substitute the American products with adequate German ones. Cooking has never been so much fun without any yucky meat around. Cooking and baking are a favorite pastime of mine. Though I am by no means proficient yet, I take great joy in trying out knew recipes and dabbling in the various cuisines from all over the world.
In my free time, I am voracious reader and enjoy discovering foreign cultures, times long past and human nature through the lenses of books. I especially like English literature and everything Jane Austen in particular. She is my favorite author ever. My tastes in music and cinema can best be described as eclectic. Generally, I am not limited to any special genre in this respect because I like discovering new things and it is important to me that a song or film has a character of its own, tells a story and bears inherent meaning. Other than that, I enjoy writing, taking long walks, crafts, scrape booking, swimming, ball room dancing and combative sports.
