Grrr...RANT!

My uncle (by marriage) is really getting on my nerves. For example, if we're out ordering food in a group and my aunt is actually placing the order, I'll ask her to inquire about the kind of vegetables available. (Sorry, I don't like zucchini, eggplant, olives, raw onions etc) While she's doing this he will interject with something dumb like "What does it matter? Veggies are veggies, she has to eat it. Just get whatever they have". Does he think I'm deaf? And what's with the "she"/third person reference. Of course it's all said with a sneer like I should just accept whatever non-meats are around me. Like being veg*n implies we have no right to have likes and dislikes. Irks me to no end. He's mighty defensive considering I don't give a fu** what he eats. I never impose my lifestyle on anyone. Never.  >:(

Some people just can't tolerate anything different or anything they don't understand.  It's a shame, really.

what? meats is meat... feed him a cat! see what he says.

i have a "little" brother...hes 26, for christs sake!...who makes smarmy little comments whenever i eat too. he talks about how delicious and meaty and greasy blah blah blah some meat product is that hes eating.
it disgusts me and makes me want to cry...but i cant b/c thats what he wants. (is he like 12??!!)

i mean, i thought we were over the "freakish veg'n" thing already! it reminds me of when someone asks "well what do you eat if you dont eat meat?"...
i think, well, what do YOU eat besides meat?? i would hope there are some veggies and grains in there somewhere!

have you ever said anything to your uncle or aunt?
bless you for being able to hold your tongue!! you are stronger than i!!

Your relative reminds me of that old dogfood commercial where some bumptious slob says, "Lookit, dogfood is dogfood--feed em what's on sale!"

I belong to a Yahoo! weightloss group and you'd be surprised (or perhaps you wouldn't) how many of them eat very little besides meat, starches and sugars (cakes, pies, junkfood etc) and then wonder why they aren't losing. Getting them to take the 5 a day campaign seriously is mind-boggling. "I'd have to go to the store just to buy vegetables!"

I admire you for keeping your own counsel. Nothing you can say will change him, you already know that, and it will just make it worse. If you take the moral high road, you never get stuck in traffic.

I think he's just an impatient fellow. But you also got to speak up for yourself. When you hear him say that. You say," Thanks uncle but I do care what I eat." Let's see if that won't stop it.

*grrr* yea--there is always someone like that! I really don't get why some omni's get so worked up over what we eat, how cares?? Just try to ignor him Cheezers, and come rant to us--we all understand that kind of mentaility.

Hahaha...I just ignore him. He's looking for a rise out of me which he will never get. The other omnivores around us do get annoyed though and they say something. My aunt ignores him and continues talking to the waiter. I could always curse him out NY style but then I'd only look as bad as he.

So why did she have to bring up the vegan thing. If an omni or lactose intolerant  just wasn't feeling for some, she wouldn't have said shit. Must have been irritating. Try mastering the "blank stare". I tell you it works wonders on putting people in their place. No smile, no back talk, just a plain old stare.  :o

If you can raise one eyebrow, you can also master looking them  quickly up and down (actually down first, then back up)  as if they were something in a shop window you'd never *seen* before, raising one eyebrow and then looking away...in silence...a sort of "I'll ignore that"...

ugh. my brother does the same thing. "mmmmm yummmmmmmm.", when he eats a nasty hamburger.

and people say the same thing to me when they find out im vegan, "what the hell do you eat??!!"

AND my mother always tell me "cows have to be milked. it's not mean. you should drink milk."

stupid people.

I like when they wave a forkful of meat at you & say, "Don't you wish you could eat this?" like it's a huge feat of discipline to keep from eating meat. It's clear they don't have any understanding that we see it as a forkful of death & cruelty.  ::)

I try to keep others' knowledge of my veganism to a minimum just to avoid all of the stupid questions (I don't mind sincere curiosity or interest, but that is rarely the case). However, a guy I work with found out I was vegan and asked, "Do you cheat sometimes, though?" Um, no...no one is forcing me to be vegan, so there is no reason to cheat. Duh. But this coming from a guy who seriously eats fried chicken for lunch EVERY day I work with him... ::)

I do have many friends, though, who are extremely supportive and never question me. They may or may not agree with my logic, but they have enough respect for me (and themselves) to not be rude.

I'm the same way!  I always felt like a huge burden when I was out for dinner with friends, and the entire group started freaking out about my being vegan.  If I go out for dinner and just have a dressing-less salad and a glass of wine, I'll live.

I guess this won't be much of a problem anymore, because I actually had to revert to being lacto-ovo veg... I'm going to culinary school soon.

Ok, sorry, this is off-topic, but it cracks me up that this site censors the words damn and asshole, but not shit.  Just something I noticed.  :)

I hate hate hate that no one thinks I should be consulted about where we eat out because "every place has salad"......and  WHO made the rule that I'm supposed to like salad?

LMAO! Oh Yabbit, that is hilarious. I'll practice that one. It's even ruder. Yay!  ;D

If you have access to DVDs of Jeremy Brett playing (the definitive!!) Sherlock Holmes, you can also use the famous Brett now-you-see-it-now-you-don't smile that says, "How very droll--if I had time for this..."  ;D I have used it with obstreperous adult students to good effect...

I hate when people call it a diet too. My parents always talk about me "dieting." It really belittles the whole thing.

I always thought ignorance was dangerous. But I know from experience that it's more hurtful than anything. Especially when it comes from family  :(
