a happy story from hunting country
so the town that i live in is a HUGE hunting town. a big festival on the first day of hunting, free bar b q for all, crowded streets with horse trailers and trucks. Anyways. My students write a song at the end of every class, usually its about skateboarding or their pets or the old music teacher (ugh), but this one particular day they wanted to write an angry song about hunting and i thought... angry? hunting? i thought everyone in this town felt happy about hunting. but NO! these kids were angry, they were mad that people used guns, that their family members could be eaten by a bear, that dogs get shot by accident and one girl even started crying when she told me a story...
"whenever my dad goes hunting i tell him, dad, dont shoot the deer! they're beautiful creatures!" i almost started crying and a lot of other kids started saying 'yeah' and had sad faces.
future vegans! i wanted to start an animal rights group right there! haha. activism in music class! but it would have been inappropriate and their teacher came to pick them up. ohwell.
That's amazing!! Hopefully those kids can remain compassionate.
PS-- What an icky town.

mine do too. i've had 4 year olds come up and say 'my dad and i are going hunting this weekend!'. it was just this one particular class that had some animal lovers in it. when they said that hunting made them mad, i said 'what??? why does hunting make you mad? i'm so confused' taking into consideration the outlook on hunting within our community, i thought that maybe they didnt understand the emotion of angry yet, but they totally understood it. they're smart!

They are just probably excited to be going ANYwhere with dad, who has probably been at work all week and too tired to interact with his kids. Dad gets to kill two birds with one stone (pun only partially not intended)--he gets to do something HE enjoys and it looks like he's spending time with his kids. What a good dad! :P

yeah i agree! i just wish they did something together that didnt involve killing. ha. it leaves me feeling queasy knowing that my students go out on the weekends and kill things. i dont say anything to the kids, i just smile and nod, they are so excited to hang out with their parents, which is a good thing.

Can you blame the parents? I mean...just looking into the innocent eyes of a child, all I can think is "this kid needs a gun" ::)
Seriously, who lets their four year old be anywhere around a gun, anyway?

i think it has a lot to do with the community. this is what a lot of people in my town do. at lunch they talk about hunting, church and gossip. that's all. i come in and i'm the weird one. there's a lot of pressure on people in this small town to go to church and hunt and to raise your kids to do the same, because most likely, they will not leave. haha. if they are not raised to be "normal" then they will be "weird" like me. most people that i work with are from here, they allll know each other and everyones families. no one leaves this town, its creepy.
what a great story! i have actually been wanting to turn one of my youngest brother vegan! he is only 9 (or something around that) but he really seems to love animals, i am planning on making him some delicious treats next time i see him and telling him about how his normal treats are evil to the animals. oh, i am so mean to my mother... she would be so annoyed if she knew what i was planning.

Do we work in the same town????? Ha! ;D :D
I remember one guy of my acquaintance who got such a hard time from his two young daughters after I had taken them with mine to see Bambi. I t was years before the older one got over it - she kept screaming at him and his hunting friends - "you are the hunters - it was you who killed Bambi's mummy!" I don't think he ever quite forgave me
What a good story! :)
My nephew is 11 and dad does not hunt which makes me very happy. But then this kids Grandpa decided to buy him a hunting rifle and teach him how to deer hunt!!! Oh how I wish his mom and dad would put there foot down and say NO WAY. This makes me so sad. He is so young and probably just thinks its cool to hang out with Grandpa.
