no, at a hospital. i think maybe there is some loophole for jobs like that, but they are jerks anyway. i think i am still bitter because of my 13 hour shift yesterday. btw, i like your new picture.

I think it's left up to the employers. I thought I heard the government only cares if your being paid at least minimum wage and that your paid for the overtime. Call up the labor department if you want to be sure. (I'm pretty sure the labor department is in charge of that ???).

Yeah, there are no laws for overtime. A lot of unions have it written into their contracts but most other employees just do it at their own discretion. Hospitals for example have to have employs there. People don't get to decide when they get sick. Most hospitals use a rotating holiday schedule (one on one off) or a seniority preference.

Storm - what colors are you painting?
My labor day - hanging towels on the clothesline in the sun; trying to get the pink out of the sheets I accidentally washed with a new beach towel; playing fetch with the Codester; biking to the Indian grocer to check out their renovations; working from home to catch up on the things I didn't really get done during the summer :-\ Anyone want to design my database for me?!

I used to work in a union shop & if you were full time & worked on holidays you were paid triple time. If you were part time & worked on the holiday, some of your pay was at triple time, the rest was at 2 times. I don't recall exactly how they calculated it, but there was no shortage of people who wanted to work on holidays. Since it was a grocery store, Labor Day, like Memorial Day & July 4th, are all very busy days. And of course, if you chose not to work, you still got paid single time.
My mother always spoke badly about unions. I had to bite my tongue many times listening to her. One day I finally asked her to keep her anti-union views to herself because if it weren't for my good paying union job with decent benefits, I would be asking her for help with my college tuition. Good union jobs put both me & my husband through college & we had resumes with decent work history as well. This was back in the late 60's-70's.
Maybe unions got carried away with their power, but now we have the reverse where management & stockholders have all the power. We have to get off this see-saw of power transfer & find some balance.

Me too. I've been painting for a while now. We built a new 1,500 foot apt over the garage so I have to paint everything from scratch. two coats of primer, and one or two coats of paint. :P
And the worst part is it is all the same color. White ceilings and trim and wheat colored walls. At least I convinced him to let me paint them something other than straight white.

I'm also at work, but I don't mind because the day is beautiful, and I am getting out at 2pm because I went in at 6. I am in a union as well, and I get paid double time for working a holiday, whereas at my last job I didn't get even a Happy Christmas for all of the holidays I was forced to work. Non-union of course.
I have heard a lot of people complain about unions too, and everytime I hear "it makes workers lazy" or something to that effect. The fact of the matter is that both union and non-union workers are typically making less money than they used to, and are working more hours than they used to as well; Union power has been waning since the 70's, which can be seen by doing only a small amount of research.

haven't really had the "day off" - but I'm not working anymore. summer's over! does that deserve an exclamation mark?

Our "Labour Day" is May 1 and it is v. much a day for political rallies etc. But I took Monday off anyway, spent it lying in bed watching DVDs and resting and dozing at intervals.
For those with access to international films, may I recommend "Les Brodeuses" (Eng Title "A Common Thread", I believe). Beautifully filmed, good actors and I love that the "heroine" was a very normal-looking girl with red hair...and a wonderful smile.

I will move some of my kitchen counter items to the cabinet -- like my food processor & Vitamix. It will be good exercise & clear off my countertops.

Labor day is a holiday honoring the workingman.

It is too bad that more people haven't read those articles, and things would undoubtedly make more sense to them if they had.
I think employees should never be competing with employers.
But I never want to see this either with employers they earning a million dollars plus and there's layoffs in the company. That's horrible.
