NVR- Good beach place (country) to visit during Christmas

I am actually going cause the salt water is SO good for my neck and back (I was in a bad car accident) but the prices for air tickets are high.

My 1st choice was Dominican Republic

I do not like crowds (touristy stuff) and am really looking for a warm sunny place and beach where I can relax.

No US places please

Thanks!

I don't know what's touristy.  My friend used to spend summers on a yacht off of Tonga.  Her pictures always made the place look warm and awesome.  I'm not sure if there's a season to avoid there.

I love the beaches in greece, such clear water, cafes all along the beach, nude beaches, stones instead of sand... not sure how warm it still is during christmas, maybe you could go to the soutern hemisphere, austrailia, kenya, brazil or something.

i've never been to the Dominican republic, but i hear it's dreamy.  read "the rum diary" by hunter S Thompson, it's about puerto rico in the 50's.  but i imagine the DR remains untainted like PR was in the book.

I hate to be a Debbie Downer, but I would highly recommend NOT going to the Dominican Republic. I went there a few years ago with my family... 1) It was the most expensive vacation we ever took, and 2) None of us liked it! I also have several friends/acquaintances who have been there & were very disenchanted by the whole experience. :-\

One thing I really disliked was that everything surrounding the resort we stayed at was very low-income & the people living there were completely poverty-stricken and living in high-crime communities. In fact, the hotel guests were really strongly discouraged from leaving the premises... at all. No sight-seeing, no exploring, nothing. I just really hated the feeling of being at this beautiful resort while the native people right outside the walls were practically starving to death. I have heard this about the surrounding areas for many other resorts & hotels (besides the one we stayed at), as well.

Also, perhaps it was the time of year (March), but it was SO humid! Not breezy, warm paradise... It was sticky & blech the whole week!

This was just my personal experience, so I wanted to share it! Please don't think I'm trying to be a bummer! :P I really do think you should travel to where you feel you want to! I am sure there are people who have enjoyed the Dominican Republic, so don't just take my word for it. ;)

As for somewhere I would recommend, I haven't been to too many warm places outside of the U.S... Mostly around Europe, but that won't be warm in December! But I have heard amazing things about Australia, New Zealand & Fiji! I'd love to go to those three places someday!

Let us know what you decide!

i went to playa del carmen, mexico earlier this year, and it was really great. it's not too touristy, and pretty cheap. it's also the port to cozumel, and i'm guessing it's a little less busy there, although it's probably nothing but tourists and more expensive. i wanted to go to belize while there but didn't get a chance, everyone i know that's been to belize says it's pretty much heaven on earth. the caribbean sea is GORGEOUS. gorgeous gorgeous gorgeous. gorgeous.
