I thought a good topic would be to start a thread with cool veg*n quotes.
I know I've heard some great ones.... but I can't think of any right now... hence the need for this thread. :D
Yay! I love quotes. I was really excited to see this thread... I saved some of them, thanks everyone!
Heres some of my favouritess:
When a chimpanzee mother comforts her frightened infant,we say that she is behaving like a human; when a human being resorts to insane violence,we say that he is acting like an animal. Perhaps it's the other way around...
- Wayne Grady
The world is a dangerous place, not because of those who do evil, but because of those who look on and do nothing.
- Albert Einstein
Your silence gives consent.
- Plato
Could a greater miracle take place than for us to look through each other's eyes for an instant?
- Henry David Thoreau
Wild animals never kill for sport. Man is the only one to whom the torture and death of his fellow creatures is amusing in itself.
- Charles Darwin
My manner of thinking stems straight from my considered reflections; it holds with my existence, with the way I am made. It is not in my power to alter is; and were it, I'd not do so. This manner of thinking you find fault with is my sole consolation in life; it alleviates all my sufferings in prison, it composes all my pleasures in the world outside, it is dearer to me than life itself. Not my manner of thinking but the manner of thinking of others has been the source of my unhappiness.
- Peter Singer
So long as men are compassionate to such a degree that they cannot hear a fly struggling in a spider's web without emotion it can never be reasonbably maintained that it is their natural impulse to wound and kill the dumb animals, or to butcher one another in what is called the field of honour.
- John Newton
:)
"When violence and destruction has, for century after century, been the tedious norm, non-violence is revolutionary."
- Lee Hall (Capers in the Churchyard, Animal Rights Advocacy in the Age of Terror)
my friends had a painting with the following prominently featured on it:
"You are a guest of nature. Behave."
i like that :)
EDIT: i just googled the quote (shoulda done that first, huh?) and sounds like it's from Friedensreich Hundertwasser, an austrian artist.
i have that on a magnet! i went to the Hundertwasser museum in Vienna, the man has amazing works. i few more of his quotes that i liked (not vegan though):
"The horizontail belongs to nature; the vertical belongs to man."
"Our real illiteracy is our inability to create"
"If we do not honour our past, we lose the future. If we destroy our roots, we cannot grow."
how cool! after googling and reading about Hundertwasser, i've def added the museum to my list of curiosities and hope to someday visit, myself! i like all his quotes, and based on the brief bits i read, his attitudes and quirkiness, if you will.
i really like "Our real illiteracy is our inability to create." thanks for sharing!!
A man found a long stretch of beach upon which hundreds of starfish had been stranded by a great storm. He observed a boy cupping the starfish in his hands one by one and gently placing them back into the sea.
The man asked the boy: "What does it matter? You'll never save them all."
The boy smiled. "It matters to the ones I save." from Open Your Mind, Open Your Life by Taro Gold.
"When violence and destruction has, for century after century, been the tedious norm, non-violence is revolutionary."
- Lee Hall (Capers in the Churchyard, Animal Rights Advocacy in the Age of Terror)
"Join the fight for non-violence!"
(Cracked magazine)
In reference to another topic I started....
"Until we stop harming all other living beings, we are still savages." - Thomas A. Edison
"When violence and destruction has, for century after century, been the tedious norm, non-violence is revolutionary."
- Lee Hall (Capers in the Churchyard, Animal Rights Advocacy in the Age of Terror)
"Join the fight for non-violence!"

;D ;D ;D Good one!
All the darkness in the world cannot put out a single candle. (That it's a Billy Graham quote doesn't diminish how much I like this.)
This the the quote I used as my senior (yearbook) quote:
The animals of the world exist for their own reasons. They were not made for humans any more than black people were made for white, or women created for men. ~Alice Walker
I adore Alice Walker and I believe it showcases 3 of my most fundamental beliefs: veganism, feminism, and equality.

I meant race equality, dummy.
Veganism (specieism) would fall under equality, as well. :p
Almost all of my Facebook status updates are quotes I've stumbled across that particularly speak to me at that given moment. Here are a few of the most recent ones:
“Oh, Beautiful for smoggy skies, in-sec-it-cided grain. For strip-mined mountain's majesty above the asphalt plain. America, America, man sheds his waste on thee. And hides the pines with billboard signs, from sea to oily sea.”
-George Carlin's rendition of America the Beautiful
“Your task is not to seek for love, but merely to seek and find all the barriers within yourself that you have built against it.”
-Jalal ad-Din Rumi
"The yogi realizes that his life and all its activities are part of the divine action in nature, manifesting and operating in the form of man. In the beating of his pulse and the rhythm of his respiration, he recognizes the flow of the seasons and the throbbing of universal life. To neglect or to deny the needs of the body is to neglect and deny the universal life of which it is a part."
- BKS Iyengar
"Each friend represents a world in us, a world possibly not born until they arrive, and it is only by this meeting that a new world is born."
-Anais Nin
"Look to this day, for it is life, the very life of life.
In its brief course lie all the varieties and realities of existence:
The bliss of growth.
The glory of action.
The splendor of beauty.
For yesterday is already a dream, and tomorrow is only a vision.
But today, well lived, makes every yesterday a dream of happiness and every tomorrow a vision of hope."
- Sanskrit proverb
Ganked from the KJV, even though that is not my personal favourite translation:
"And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth."
Dominion. Lordship. Doesn't mean tyranny or abuse or waste. It means protection, guardianship, stewardship. It's not our right to do as we wish with the earth; it's our responsibility to take care of it.

Veganism is a life style but that doesn't mean that someone lives by it because they believe animals edserve equality ;)
call me a pedant.
Tom, if you believe specieism is bad, you believe in equality.
so shush.
Tom, if you believe specieism is bad, you believe in equality.

Not every vegan necessarily believes that it is though ;D

If you're not going to post quotes, get the fuck off the quotes thread.
Poor animals! How jealously they guard their pathetic bodies…that which to us is merely an evening’s meal, but to them is life itself.
—T. Casey Brennan (1948–)
