I just wanted to share this little critter I found in my garden today. Isn't he/she tiny and cool?

I had to do some serious squinting to figure out what it is. A praying mantis, right? Those, along with crickets and grasshoppers, really creep me out. <Shudders>

Yeah, it's a praying mantis. I forgot that sometimes pictures don't look the same on everyone's computer. I hope it's visible for everyone.
Crickets give me serious willies, but for some reason I love praying mantises.

The picture's clear, and beautifully shot, BTW. My poor eyes are just weak and allergy-affected right now!

Thanks for caring about my picture! I felt kind of silly posting it. I wasn't sure if anyone else would think it was as cool as I did! I was actually checking the progress of a zucchini when I spotted him. Just by chance that he caught my eye.

I love them, too. There was one on the top of our car years ago and when I talked to it, it tilted its head like it was listening. May have been a coincidence or maybe it was trying to get a better look at me but it was adorable.

What a wonderful "miniature"! I like it! I hope it's a gentleman mantid, though (grammar lesson: one mantid, two mantis). I have trouble relating to the lady mantid...something about eating your mate after you've finished with him just doesn't seem polite, where I come from! :D

Awww its a lil baby mantid!!
A few years back we purchased a few mantis cocoons (forget what they are called) and hatched them for release into our yard.
We had a few thousand hatch over a few weeks. Haven't seen any return, but it doesn't quite mean they aren't around since we are on quite a few acres.

I knew I had that singular/plural thing wrong! Thanks for the lesson. I love knowing obscure stuff like that. :)

Apstaats, I loved the pictures! Preying Mantis amaze me. Yabbitgirl, I had no idea one was a Preying Mantid. Like Apstaats, I love learning new and obscure stuff like that. I also agree that eating your mate after you've finished doesn't seem very polite. I thought they just ate their heads! That would keep the rest of them useful, wouldn't it? ;D ;D ;D

I thought it was Praying Mantid...because of the way they fold their hands? Maybe I'm wrong but I think not. (She says, sounding snooty as all getout without meaning to.) Apstaats, whenever you need obscure bits of information, come to me. Practical stuff useful for day-to-day survival, I'm not so good at, but I can quote Shakespeare and several minor film scripts from memory. Diver-Di, even tho I think there are more of us females on VW at any one time than males, re: the usefulness of headless males--I just won't go there. ;D ;D As to that mental image y'all are giggling at--you put it there, not me. ;)

Insects rock! They're small so even if they're vicious they're not scary like raccoons (I like black widow spiders more than raccoons).

I meant to say in my all-about-me post is that you inspired me to go out into my garden on safari. Not only were no water buffalo babies saved, but I ddn't even see a garden pest. Nice find on your side.
