Sucks to your assmar!

(5 points to whomever understands that quote)

So, I have been having some trouble breathing lately, which peaked this morning when I thought I was having a heart attack and could not breathe after a very small workout in the gym.  I went to the ER, had a million tests run, and finally they do a test and see that my lungs are not working at full capacity.
I had to blow into a tube- a normal person blows to 600-800, a medicated asthmatic blows to 300-500, and anything below that was the red ‘go to the ER’ line.  I was 210!  So they gave me some albeurtol and send me back with a prescription for an inhaler, steroids and a follow up with a doctor to do all the asthma testing.  They are 99 percent sure it’s exercise induced asthma, since I’ve had extensive allergy testing that always come up with nothing.

So, this blows!  (pun intended)  Anyone else have asthma?  Any good tips?  I am a little bewildered, and NOT expecting this when I woke up this morning! :(

And to keep this from becoming too NVR…my iron levels are good, my potassium is good, AND my bones are super dense.  It was nice to know that, despite the breathing issues, I was still a healthy vegan! ;)

Is that LOTFs?

I had "asthma" for about six months once.  I got it suddenly and then it went away.  They made me blow into a tube and a ball or something was supposed to float up so they could tell the air pressure, but I couldn't blow out hard enough to budge the ball.  I'm not sure if it was asthma or if there was something else wrong and they called it asthma.  Did you have symptoms leading up to this or were your recent symptoms pretty sudden?

Am I remembering right that you have an eating disorder? They can cause damage to the vital organs, so it may be something that will improve as you become better nourished. If your body doesn't get enough dietary protein, it will rob the muscles (including heart, etc) for it. (I'm afraid I learned that the hard way) :-\

I cheated and looked up "sucks to your assmar" on Google. No points for me. (Do I get points for being honest about cheating?)

When I caught a mild case of pneumonia once, my doctor kept checking up on my lungs thereafter by making me blow into that tube and ball thingy. I never got quite up to par with what I was before in terms of my exhaling on that device. Though I've never been diagnosed with asthma. I can understand your frustration. Hopefully it's something that is very temporary and will reverse itself soon.

I have asthma, but I haven't taken any meds in a long time. I credit that to martial arts. If I spar (fight) for a long time, I get "winded" but other than that, I think it actually helped me. I had one asthma attack in the last 6 years (do to an intense sparring class and getting kicked in the chest).

I also have allergies, which can spark asthma attacks. Which is happening right now (allergies). But I'm still training, and I haven't had a problem yet. I just feel like "crap" in general because of being so stuffed up.

Maybe you can get checked for allergies. I didn't have allergies until I was an adult. Never had them before I was 20. I always had asthma, but the allergies made it worse. I started martial arts when I was 24, and I built up my lungs through MA.

I had asthma as a child and teenager and suddenly don't anymore... i also had horrible allergies/hay fever that went away.
I think it had to do with moving to a cold climate where their was actually a winter and the pollen from the last year was "washed away" by real weather.
Hopefully the meds will help. Regular mild exercise (not running) used to help me as well. Did they say anything about if you can continue exercise?

well i did take high school english, so i am familiar with lord of the flies.  but anyways, in my experience the best thing you can do for something like asthma is see a chiropractor regularly.  usually a doctor who does upper-cervical adjustments (just in the neck) is devoted to  the nervous system.  this is better than going to a doctor who just deals with pain and back injuries.
