wave hellos

Okay, I'm finally going to fess up to the fact that I don't understand what "wave hellos" are for. (Can't we get a Help page on this web site to explain these things?!)
Yabbit--you sent a wave hello to me once (and I was very happy about it!), and I just returned the wave hello figuring that's what I'm supposed to do. Was that the right thing to do?! I was too embarrassed to fess up and just post something asking about it. Did I miss something? Because now I'm wondering maybe there was some hidden thing involved that I didn't know about (sometimes my paranoia kicks in)....so I just thought I'd check.
I'm just so very clueless at times.....(but I guess that's obvious).
Shaolinbunny I too have a confession! I can can not for the life of me figure out how you reference another persons post. You guys do it all the time and its highlighted in purple, when you want to comment on something someone said. I feel so ridiculous that i can not figure this one out!

Just hit the "quote" button in the upper right hand corner of the post! ;)

Click on the Quote button on the upper right corner of the person's post that you want to quote. It will take you directly to the Post Reply page where you can write/enter a reply. The quote will appear in the reply box in HTML. You can edit the quote in HTML, if you'd like (deleting any part of the quote you don't want).
Edit: Oops, sorry, Veggeroni, didn't see that you had already answered this!

Thanks guys!!!!
The quote thing took me too long to figure out. I'll admit it.

I think wave hellos are for people like me who can't subscribe to be a full member of VegWeb, so we can't email others. (My DH holds the plastic. I would be glad to send Yvette Euros if she had a mailing adress for Veg Web). Wave Hellos are a way to say "hi" without paying the fee to initiate a conversation. At least that's the way I understand it. Correct me if I'm wrong.
Yes, I did get your waves (2 in fact). They always make me smile. I've sent a few to posters whose comments I've liked---a couple I didn't get back, so just so they know, I'm not a Netstalker! ;D
I confess, I had no clue what the wave hellos were for either until I finally got an account a few weeks ago. I think you send one in the hopes that the person you send it to has an account. Then that person can message you, and you are free to talk back and forth with him/her at that point.
I had a major AHA (and duh) moment when I figured that one out!

Yabbit and Apstaats--what the both of you say makes sense. Thank you for explaining it! I don't have an account, so I can't message people. Seems like it would be more of a worthwhile feature if the wave hello was sent directly to the person's actual email address, that way the receiver can send an email back. My wave hello only showed up in my vegweb account, without any indication of an email address.
I just figured the quote thing out earlier today! :)
I try and send a couple of hellos to others on at the same time as myself, I'm on European time so you tend to see the same "faces" if you know what I mean? I think it's a friendly thing to do, so go on reply with a wave hello back, we don't bite (we're veggie afterall!) ;D
Thanks for explaining these. When I first joined apstaats sent me a hello greeting (thanks) and I didn't know the etiquette, so I didn't send one back. I appreciated receiving it. Thanks. :)
So last night I paid to officially join VegWeb. I joined because I use the site a lot, but y'all mentioned other things that come with memebership. I got the post from Yvette, so I can access messages, but I'm not sure how to use them.
I'm posting in this thread because I'm still not clear on the wave hellos. Do I send a wave hello to initiate messaging, or is it not that clear. Can I send a wave hello without someone feeling like they have to message me? For example, I'd like to send a wave to TinTexas because she's undergoing surgery but I don't want her to feel obligated to message me back. I just want her to know I'm thinking about her. If she received a wave hello would custom make her feel obligated to return it or would custom allow her to think it was a nice gesture without requiring a response?
I send them all the time, and I don't have a paid account. It is what it says, it's a way to say, "Hi, I know you're there" without initiating a conversation. I've sent T a few...if the person wants to, they punch "reply" and you get the same thing (This is a wave hello...etc). If they don't want to reply, they do nothing.
I once recieved a wave from someone I've never ever seen post on here. And I've sent a couple and gotten no reply. Sometimes if I like what someone has posted lately, or I know they're having a rough time, I'll send one. Whether or not they reply is up to them. I can't message as I don't have a paid account--so I guess they're safe! ;D
hhoney- Now that you have an account, you can send actual messages to anyone you want (different than wave hellos). It's like e-mailing people within the site. If you go into someone's profile, at the bottom will be a link to "send this member a personal message." So you can send TinTexas whatever message you'd like, and she will be able to message you back once you have initiated the conversation.
I've received Wave Hellos at some point as well and had no clue what they were or what I was supposed to do with them. I didn't know you could pay to be a full member either. Though, given I'm in NZ that may not be an option.
I've had a burning question since I joined up. When looking at a recipe some people comments are in boxes, others are just text separated by lines. Mine's always in a box. Can I make a comment and have it come up as just text?
BCSH, do you have an example? I'm not sure what you're talking about.
I randomly chose Best Oat Cookies That Ever Existed (http://vegweb.com/index.php?topic=6605.15) the by chance BCSH's post was the latest one added. When looking, I could figure out how to chose between the post being below the recipe with just text or above the recipe with our picture.
Doesn't it say something about some of the comments being archived--the ones that are just text? I'm not sure how long they are "in boxes" before they get archived, but I figured that was the difference.
Ohhhhh. I think I get it! Are you talking about how all of the posts at the beginning of the reviews are not in boxes, but the ones near the end are in boxes? This is because a while back, vegweb did some kind of major overhaul and they archived all of the existing reviews. Those reviews are the ones that are plain text. All of the reviews since then appear in boxes.
EDIT: ...as bookmama said!
I saw the archive, but it wasn't in context to anything I knew about. So, they did the ol' overhaul? I had been wondering about that myself. I feel a bit like a successful Inspector Clouseau - mystery solved. ;)
