Winter Storm in the Upper Midwest!
Hey VegWebbers! Take a look at the national weather radar:
http://www.weather.com/maps/maptype/dopplerradarusnational/index_large.html
eep! Where I am in Iowa, that big white blob is sending down a nasty mix of freezing rain...and it's only going to get worse throughout the day.
this nasty winter storm is expected to sweep across the areas of many of our VW friends here....
JessaCita and other Minnesotans
Vigilant20 and other Wisconsinites
Cephi and other Chi-town/Illinoisans
....and probably many others that I'm forgetting right now...
The forecast for my area:
SNOW AND SLEET ACCUMULATIONS WILL BE 2 TO 4 INCHES BEFORE THE TRANSITION TO FREEZING RAIN. ICE ACCRUAL ON TOP OF THE FROZEN PRECIPITATION WILL LIKELY BE HEAVY...ONE HALF TO ONE INCH...PRECIPITATION WILL TAPER OFF TO PATCHY FREEZING DRIZZLE AFTER MIDNIGHT TONIGHT.
SIGNIFICANT ICING WILL CREATE VERY HAZARDOUS TRAVEL CONDITIONS DURING TODAY AND TONIGHT. IN ADDITION...A SOUTHEAST WIND GUSTING OVER 30 MPH WILL LIKELY DOWN TREE LIMBS AND POWER LINES THAT ARE WEIGHED DOWN BY ICE. THE POTENTIAL EXISTS FOR MAJOR POWER OUTAGES.
A WINTER STORM WARNING MEANS SIGNIFICANT AMOUNTS OF SNOW... SLEET... AND ICE ARE OCCURRING. THIS WILL MAKE TRAVEL VERY HAZARDOUS OR IMPOSSIBLE. COMMERCE WILL LIKELY BE SEVERELY IMPACTED. IF YOU MUST TRAVEL...KEEP AN EXTRA FLASHLIGHT...FOOD... AND WATER IN YOUR VEHICLE IN CASE OF AN EMERGENCY. ICE ACCUMULATIONS AND WINDS WILL LIKELY LEAD TO SNAPPED POWER LINES AND FALLING TREE BRANCHES THAT ADD TO THE DANGER.
(sorry, it was all in caps on the website...someone let me know if I should edit that)
:P
So please, for anyone who will be hit with this severe weather, STAY SAFE! Keep us updated on what's happening in your area, and let us know if you're okay.
I don't know if your areas are expecting power outages, too...but I do hope that we'll hear from you sometime so we (I) don't worry about you! Keep warm, friends.
:-*
It's been snowing in central Wyoming since I woke up this morning and hasn't stopped, just a steady flow of white flakes. If I find more time to avoid the endless amout of papers I have to write and am behind on, I will take a picture and post it......it is beautiful.
I'm in Michigan and we are expecting to get a butt load of snow, ice and rain! Ours is starting tonight around 6pm on into tomorrow--our forecasters are even predicting thunderstorms tomorrow night as the system passes!
Everybody stay WARM!!!

I'm about 40 miles west of Chicago and it started snowing about 3 hours ago... icy snow. Ick.
I bought myself a pair of boots. I don't want to go anywhere. Too messy and sllllllllow.
Thanks, Carrot, and everyone else, stay safe!!
Eeww! My sis is in Cleveland, and it looks like they are next! Good thing I decided to make her babe a warm fleece vest for Christmas.
I'm in upstate NY. We got a little snow, but not enough >:( As for those that don't know, I'm a snowboarder ..... let it snow! :D But for those that are getting hammered, stay safe. Not even a snowboarder would go out in those conditions (until the storm let up, that is ;) ). I want to see ya back on Vegweb :)
I just checked CW's link & the storm is so close to me now. Capture, CarrotWench, Vigilant, Meggs, how much snow have you got & is it still coming down?
it looks like not much is falling right now...only about 1/2 inch (or maybe less) has accumulated. But from the looks of the latest radar map, that big purple patch of icy madness should arrive any minute now! where's the "eeek!" smiley?
The wind is getting pretty bad out there....I'm looking out the window right now, feeling very glad that I'm not a tree!
of course, this city is notoriously windy, especially the campus and my apartment, which is basically on top of a hill.
Today is a really big football game at the UNIDome (we're in the playoffs or something, undefeated so far this season, meh) and I'm pretty sure there are tons of people attending. I worry about all those people driving home as this stuff gets worse throughout the evening.
Right now I'm defrosting the other half of the pumpkin soup I made a few weeks ago--my very first, from scratch, REAL pumpkin, pumpkin soup! so savory and comforting on a day like today. I'm off to bake some cookies to pass the time!
....could probably catch up on homework. but homework doesn't have chocolate chips.
where's the "eeek!" smiley?

Save them & use them.
We only got about an inch (or two? I'm so bad at estimation of those things) and now it's getting ICY.
I don't like it. And as for homework... I've done none. Napping, now that's where it's at!
Just thought I'd tell you that I wore a tank top and shorts today in sunny Florida. ;)
Just kidding. I hope everyone is safe and toasty!
Just thought I'd tell you that I wore a tank top and shorts today in sunny Florida. ;)
But you're NOT kidding... I'm so jealous.... :P

Heh heh, ok, the tank top and shorts thing was true, but I was kidding about the rubbing it in part. ;)
And you know you can always come visit!!
We were supposed to go out for lunch today (mmm...mediterranean food) but I'm in Iowa too.
It rained. Then it sleeted. Then it rained slush. Then it snowed. Then it decided to rain again. And the whole time, the wind was having a blast as well. The car had a centimeter of ice on it.
We're going for lunch tomorrow. :P
I am in Madison, WI, and it's been snowing since about 10a, now it's more like freezing rain. I can hear it on the windows, yuck. We drove around a bit earlier for some errands (I did end up getting my mediterranean food though!) and it was miserable. Who would think that my 87 volvo 240 wagon would be actually pretty good in the snow? My dogs are not happy and grocery shopping tomorrow will likely be a hoot. But, how else will I craft delicious goodies to hoard while it's too cold to leave the house? ;D
Our snow (Michigan) only stated about an hour ago (7pm)--it's looking real nasty though! Me, the kitties and the DRM are staying in the house tonight!!!

I think it's supposed to continue to be icky tomorrow!! I'd go any time there is a break in the ickiness. Make a list and go fast! Well, don't drive fast, be safe, but get in and out of the grocery store and back to pups and warmth as fast as possible. :)
I got everything done this morning. I'm ready to be a recluse for the next two days, if necessary. ;)
I'm hoping we get snowed in and they cancel classes on Monday...I haven't had a "snow day" since my junior year of high school...that was a long time ago :'(
Maybe the ice will be too dangerous.
I don't have class until Tuesday, I bet it will all be cleaned up by then :(

It started snowing in my part of Michigan before 5pm (not sure of time...that's when I woke up and noticed the ground was covered) and the last 2 hours it's been freezing rain. It sure will be fun driving to work tonight where I'm sure we'll be dead and I'll basically get "show up" pay.
show up pay = show up and read magazines all night. ;)
show up pay = show up and read magazines all night. ;)
Nice. I want a job like that!
It's raining now... freezing...
Really, though, I'm trying to be optimistic about it all and think about how I'll get to wear my boots tomorrow :)
It's silly, every year I think the same thing- WHY do I live in Illinois!?!? I hate winter/snow/ice/cold!
27 years later... still here.... ???
