yes!!! she finally gets it!!

yay!! my mom was all concerned with my protein intake, but we saw my dietician on thursday and she said it was fine, so now my mom is not bothering me about wanting me to consume meat!! haha! and we had a discussion yesterday over breakfast about how im concerned for the familys health, im not all about restricting and doing eating disorder things. i said we should do a cupboard cleanout and get rid of all the things that arent good for the body, and we talked about bread labels and stuff. she even looked at my all natural peanut butter label versus the rest of the familys jif(gross!) and she said i see what you mean. she said we could start making our own homemade whole wheat bread, and could clean out the cupboards. i explained to her that there are better things to use than that stuff. the only problem is going to be getting my dad and sister to do stuff. like this morning. my sister likes that nasty prepackaged "fruit" oatmeal that has fake stuff in it, and there wasnt any in the cupboard. she said she wanted the strawberry kind.  i told her to use some of the rolled oats and chop some fresh strawberries on top and it would taste better. she said its not the same. yea, thats cause its better and more natural than that processed junk. does anyone have any suggestions on how to help my family adjust to a healthier lifestyle? i thought that we could take like greens and puree them and mix them into things and they would never know...any other ideas? sorry if this is really long... :)

Even if your mom doesn't want your sister messing with pans on a hot stove, she can make her oatmeal by putting it in a bowl the night before (2-3 spoonfuls of rolled oats), covering it with milk and leaving the bowl in the fridge all night. Next morning just zap in the microwave for 2-3 min, stir and add the fresh fruit and maybe some sugar. Shazam! Hot cereal! And no pan to wash!

It is astoundingly wonderful that your mom is seeing things from a healthier perspective and making some positive changes! Congratulations!  :)

I think the transition will be smoother if everyone is allowed to indulge in a few "junky" items that they just can't give up. Strawberry oatmeal isn't ideal, but it's better than say, summer sausage for breakfast (a sometime staple of my omni family!)- so, it might make for a happier attitude if a few things, especially vegetarian things, stay unchanged.

Another way to make strawberry oatmeal is to stir in strawberry preserves (you could get the no-sugar-added fruit sweetened ones, if you like)- that might be easier for a kid or teen to take than going for the straight fresh strawberries. 

Natural sweets, like the cookies on this site, might help convince them that they aren't signing up for a life of deprivation, but can have sweets, too.

If your sister can go to the natural foods store or farmer's market with you and help shop and help prepare, that might win her over, too. Even the pickiest eaters tend to like things better if they helped.
