1 cup stone-ground porridge oats (any oats would work, but Scottish are just the best)
2 cups cloudy apple juice
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
a small pinch salt
1/4 cup raisins (tastes better with a golden/brown raisin mix)
2 tablespoons sugar
1/2 an apple, peel on, chopped finely
1 teaspoon rum or brandy or apple Schnapps (optional but really recommended)
Mix apple juice, cinnamon, nutmeg, salt, raisins, sugar and apple together and bring to a boil.
Add the preferred alcohol and then the oats slowly while stirring, and then simmer while stirring on low heat for 10 minutes or until cooked.
May need a bit of extra water if the mixture is too thick. Raisins will get really plump and flavourful and the whole thing tastes like a really healthy mushy version of apple pie.
