The Everything Pet Thread

I wanted to start this thread to be all about our pets. Ask questions, help answer questions, tell a funny story about something your cat/dog/ferret/bird/rat, etc did, update everyone on your pet's health, tell us about a new pet, vent, grieve, laugh, etc. I know I'll be posting here a lot and I hope you'll join me!

My vet is pretty good and with the x-rays and manipulation of the toe (by both him and me) didn't see anything stuck in there or broken. He even looked very thouroughly for puncture marks in case she got stung/bite by something....and there was nothing. Her nails are pretty well trimmed. I hadn't clipped them in a while, but they didn't need it. I go by the look of her nails while she is standing to see if they need a trim or not. The concrete does a pretty good job of keeping them filed down appropriately. I really do think she pulled it somehow and caused a sprained toe. I just feel so bad for her! :(
Is Bella walking any better (i.e., is it healing on its own)?
Brought Wilma to the vet today. The sore was just a pimple and the vet said any acne wash will help. The tooth above it (the one I thought might be connected to the sore) is bad and needs to come out. She just had her teeth cleaned in February but she has periodontal problems so she is going to need more frequent cleanings. Sigh. It could be worse. All in all she is healthy.
Such good news. I was praying for her and I knew it would be something like this.
That's good news that it was something small. The first time Cat got an abscess it was on his forehead. I came home from work and there was pus and blood dripping down his little cat face. I wiped it up can called the vet the next morning. I didn't know about abscesses before that. Scary stuff.
Glad to hear it was a simple problem. Our vet sells a product called Oravet for home dental care. We don't use it, prefering raw bones, but if you're not comfortable with that, home care may be a good option to lessen the financial burden and Wilma's stress.
This reminded me of a column in a Spanish newspaper full of "olde time remedies" for home problems. None of which ever worked for me, BTW. One of them suggested cleaning your cat's teeth with fresh lemon juice. Regularly.
Yeah, if you want to visit the ER, regularly. I have never met a cat that would a) stand still for you poking things in their mouth and rubbing their teeth or much less b) allow citrus of any kind, juice or peel, near their face. They hate it.

Bella is now walking better. No more limp & she feels like playing now. ;)b Her toe is still a little swollen, but at least it doesn't look like a giant club foot anymore! :-D
That's great to hear about Tony Danza! :)>>>
Wonderful news!!!!!!!
Yay about Tony Danza and super yay for finding a decent vet!
I was going through my pictures at work and look at what I found! :)>>>
I read the first few pages of this thread, I can sympathise...I just found out today that my flat's cat Binji has kidney failure and we have to put him down :'( It's the humane thing to do, before he ends up in pain. But I'm not so happy :(
Yeah. Also, if you're going to wait, they'll want you to administer subcutaneous fluid. From the vet the bags are about $30 each. You can order them online. I got a 12-pack for $60. Also, I have eight or nine bags leftover from when Cat died in July. I can send them to you if you're going to do subcutenous fluids.

So sorry about your kitty :'( But as others have mentioned, definitely don't automatically think of it as a death sentence. My parents' cat has kidney failure that she was diagnosed with over a year ago and she's doing FABULOUS! even though her vet said we should put her down when she was diagnosed. They just changed her diet (high quality kibble--not the crap the vet sells--and canned food once a day for adequate moisture for her kidneys). If it's not too far gone, you can have much more time with them (pain-free, also--you'd never know our Lacie has KF. She bounces around like a kitten at 16 years old). And she doesn't even need subQ fluids yet. She is doing great with canned food and lots of fresh water.
Oh, and don't buy into the "low protein" food propaganda for cats with KF--it's very controversial and it's more important to reduce undigestable parts of cat food and toxins (so low-grain, artificial flavors/preservatives/colors are no-nos). Cats have a very high protein requirement, and reducing that too much can cause serious problems (good quality cat food has 40-50% protein, whereas the Hills "kidney" formula has less than 25%--way too little protein for a cat!).
Lots of us on here have or have had cats with KF. Let any of us know if you have questions.
The vet said that Binji's kidney failure is pretty advanced and irreversible, he's about twice the size he used to be because of fluid leaking from places it shouldn't and making him swell up. The only other option we were given was an initial biopsy at $1000 then the subQ for the rest of his life but no guarantee it would be more than a few months with very little likelihood he'd make it another year... my flatmate is his real owner and she can't afford it, we are all students and it's a lot of money we just don't have :(
He was a stray my flatmate found trying to eat a corn cob with no corn on it in our garden (the absolute picture of patheticness) and she took him in and started looking after him, so when I moved in and met him he was the friendliest, happiest cat...he loves people and cuddles and is so affectionate you wouldn't believe what his life used to be like. Now it's so hard to see him struggle to breathe and to see him so swollen but he's really happy and really loved and most of his life has been happy and loving.
It's my flatmate's decision ultimately, he's her cat (though we all love him) and she's torn up about it but I think she just wants to make sure he's not in pain. As she said, it's better he's so loved and has been so happy than for him to still be a stray and have this happen.

Thank you so much, I read about Cat and I'm so sorry :( It's a really kind offer and I really appreciate it.

Thank you as well, and others who have commented, I really appreciate your advice.
:'(
I didn't notice that you're in New Zealand. I guess the postage would be more than buying it there.
We have two new foster doggies! A doxie named Chevy that has to undergo heartworm treatment :'( and an older Chi/JRT mix named Wishbone who is about 9 years old.

I'm sorry to read about all of you who have lost a cat to kidney failure :( I recently lost my cat, Ezra Blue, to some illness that took him so quickly, we didn't even have time to get him to the vet. My heart is still hurting. I extend my hugs to all of you.

Here's a picture of my pooch!
She was a stray that someone threw out in a subdivision two years ago. She went to this woman's house and crawled into a dog pen with two other huge dogs. I guess it's a good thing the dogs were well mannered! The woman sent this picture out saying that if nobody came to get her, she was going to call the pound. A woman my mom worked with sent us the picture and I knew from the start that I had to have her. This is the picture that sold my heart!
Her name is Fiona.
Needless to say, life's been incredible ever since :)
OMG! How could a picture like that not steal anyone's heart!? That's is one of the cutest puppies!!!
