The Everything Pet Thread

I wanted to start this thread to be all about our pets.  Ask questions, help answer questions, tell a funny story about something your cat/dog/ferret/bird/rat, etc did, update everyone on your pet's health, tell us about a new pet, vent, grieve, laugh, etc.  I know I'll be posting here a lot and I hope you'll join me!

Aww, MDV that sucks! You should have asked for her help at least!

I'm sure if anyone saw how much food Pounce gets in his bowl they'd think I was starving him, but the dang boy weighs 13lb and we feed him about 1/4c of Wellness Weight Control twice a day, and 1/3 can of Wellness wet food around dinner time.

We also try to play with him as much as possible to get his little tushy moving around! He's certainly "big boned" but if anyone was feeding him for me and decided to free-feed him, I'd come home to a 15lb cat very quickly.

He'd be laying on the floor on his back, belly bulging... meowing at me pitifully and farting every 30 seconds. Piggy. I know this because we tried free-feeding him for the first couple of weeks we had him. Never again! He eats it ALL.

Haha!  He sounds like my Joe.  He's at his ideal weight right now at about 11.5 pounds.  When we first took him in, he was really skinny and just let him free-feed.  He got to 14 pounds very quickly and we switched to scheduled meals.  He gets 1/5 cup Wellness CORE once a day and 1/3 can of wet food or a raw meat nugget in the evening.  And some occasional garbanzo beans because he loves them so much  ;D

I think tom cats are just pigs with no self-control.  That's what I've found in my experience anyway!

My little kitty girl, Lacey, is just the opposite.  She has tantrums if her food dish is empty whether she is hungry or not.  She will pace up and down the floor yowling and try to herd me towards her dish!  She won't even eat out of it when I give in and fill it....just settle down and usually take a nap.

Last time my mom took care of Wilma, she didn't think she was eating enough so she feed her nothing but tuna and bacon for four days.  Wilma was so spoiled after that it took a long time to get her back on her regular diet again.

Yeah, come to think of it I would be nervous to let anyone take care of Pounce except a vet or MDV.

So, looks like we need to live closer so you can kitty-sit for me!

Okay, here's a great Pouncival story that literally JUST happened.

Josh and I went into the kitchen to finish fixing dinner and discuss what movie to watch while we ate. We heard a little purring meow coming from the cabinet... and Pouncival saunters out of it as if he had just decided to grace us with his presence. Usually he doesn't act like that... and I noticed that he was also licking his whiskers with a great amount of satisfaction.

Well, that cabinet, I realized, is the cabinet where we store his dry food.

So, I just finished measuring out daily servings of his food into small Zip-Lock baggies and putting those in a cabinet that he can't possibly reach (since there is no counter to stand on or anything). I had to sit on the kitchen floor with a measuring cup and pour the food from the bag into the cup and then into a little baggie. He chewed a big hole through the side of the Wellness bag! I mean, I could understand that if he'd done it in the middle of the night when he had the munchies... but I just fed him an hour ago!

Piggy.

I rearranged my turtles' tank recently. Today Spike got out. Luckily, I found him, and all is well. No I'm looking at another arrangement.

hehe- my cat does the same thing. When I buy a new bag of food for him, I put it in a plastic contaner that he can't rip up.

We're going to adopt a doggie!  She was our foster dog for like an hour before we decided to keep her.  She was turned into our shelter by a lady whose nephew didn't want her anymore.  I'm really glad he didn't because she was in rough shape.  She's getting spayed and her teeth cleaned today and also getting a couple weird lumps removed.  One of her ears is kinked because one of her puppies attacked her and tore off about a quarter-sized chunk of her ear.  Poor girl :(

We love her!  She's about 4-5 years old and is a red heeler mix and we named her Sidney.  Yay!  Isn't she the cutest?  She loves the cats, loves dogs, loves people.  She's pretty much perfect :)

Isn't she the cutest?  She's our 8th foster dog, and from the moment she walked in our house, I knew she belonged with us.  I just had a very different feeling with her--she didn't feel like a foster, she felt like ours.

She's gonna be feeling yucky tonight with her spay, dental, and lumpectomies.  She'll get some gentle lovin' tonight, with an extra hug from mdvegan :)

KB, that is fantastic!  ;)b  Sydney is beautiful!  I hope she's feeling better today, the first of many good days to come.

When Sidney got spayed last week, they removed a few lumps she had and we got the results back today.  Two  of them were benign, but one of the lumps was cancerous  :-\  But the good news is that they got it all, so hopefully it won't spread.  I have a good feeling about her recovery since she is young, active, and now spayed.  Plus, we're going to start seeing a holistic vet (only downside is they are an hour away in Boulder), so I think he'll have some good advice for us because he sees a lot of animals with cancer.

But I was wondering, for those of you with pets that have/had cancer, what sorts of supplements/herbal treatments did you use?  I'm going to be starting her on a homemade raw diet (right now she eats half high-quality kibble/half commercially produced raw patties), so I can throw whatever I want in there.  Any suggestions are appreciated!

Yeah, I have his book and have read it cover to cover.  He recommends a bunch of different things, so I was just curious what others have used and what seemed to work best.  Definitely a good resource, though, so I'll be using that.

I really think she'll be fine since she's young and it was only one lump, but we just want to keep her as healthy as possible obviously.  Right now, she's playing ball in the house (because Josh has no will power and lets her  ::)  ).

kbuettne, all the best to Sidney.

I have a funny story to tell about Stu....it's always about Stu  ;D Stu is big....really BIG! We have a large crate in the rec room where Stu sleeps at night & chills during the day when he's bored. The bottom of the crate is a hard plastic. Well yesterday we noticed that Stu had somehow made a hole in the plastic. Today, he totally destroyed the plastic. DH went to the hardware store for a piece of plywood to put on the bottom of the crate. As he was cutting the plywood in the garage, he put Stu in the crate because when left alone, Stu likes to beat up on things like....oh, the remote & DH's glasses. When he came back in the house, Stu was walking around the rec room with the crate on his back LOL  :-D

Thanks, MD and jessesmum!  The vet has quite a few different different methods that he uses (ozone, nutracuticals, botanicals to name a few), so we'll see.  I don't think she's necessarily classified as a "cancer" patient since they are pretty positive it hasn't spread.

And LOL jessesmum about Stu!  I hope you got a picture of that!!

I wish you had pictures.  I really, really, really do.  I heart Stu.

Best of luck, KB, I'm sure your baby will pull through!

That's the first thing I asked...did you film him? He didn't think to grab the camera.
He went bananas on a water bottle the other day....picked it up in his mouth & punctured the side....got wet....went ape shit on the bottle & totally killed it  :D

Oh what will my dog do next?
