The Everything Pet Thread

I wanted to start this thread to be all about our pets.  Ask questions, help answer questions, tell a funny story about something your cat/dog/ferret/bird/rat, etc did, update everyone on your pet's health, tell us about a new pet, vent, grieve, laugh, etc.  I know I'll be posting here a lot and I hope you'll join me!

Andy and I had rats when we first moved in together.  Penelope, Isabelle, and Taylor.  They were our baby girls.  But they all died, as rats do, but not before costing us hundreds of dollars at the vet's.  They cost more than my dogs do.  I still miss them and wish I had a couple to play with.

Just a little update from our house. Monk is doing great. He is still on antibiotics & is peeing less & less blood all the time.
I swear at my house, when it rains it pours! Back in December, when Monk passed his first stone, our dog Stu had a bladder infection...no big deal. Antibiotics cleared him up in no time. Well right after Monk came home from hospital, Stu was having trouble peeing. After following him around & him trying to avoid us, we got a pee sample & brought it to the vets. He's got stones!  OMFG! What are the odds? Two out of three animals living in the same house would have the same problem at the same time, twice! Like the last time, Stu had no trouble passing it...thank ceiling cat  ^-^

JessesMum,

Right before I moved out (from living with my ex) three of my cats got bladder stones at the same time.  We had their food tested, our water tested - everything!  The vet said that sometimes stress can trigger these inflammatory bladder episodes, which sort of makes sense.  Perhaps Stu knew how upset you were about Monk?

Stu was very upset that Monk was gone. One night DH & I were talking & Stu heard us say Monk's name & he cried. He searched the house for him for days & when we brought Monk home, we had to keep Stu away from him for a while because he was so excited...I was afraid he'd hurt him with all the happy hopping go on....that is very interesting & makes sense. Thanx

A bit of good news on my end this week.
I rescued a purebred Terrier this week.

He has a bit of a temper and bit the previous owners daughter.
A little bit severe since it required stitches.

To keep this short I already found a home for him with someone who can train him. That family intends to permanently adopt him.
Will post a pic of him later this week.
Usually do not keep pics of all the animals I rescue.
Certain ones stand out in your mind though.

Rescued from the family?

The dog I rescued came from the family that was caring for him.
Now they do not want him in the house because he bit the little girl in the house
I was told that the girl ended up with something like 9 stitches from the bite.

The family that intends to adopt him is familiar with behavior modification to make him a perfect family dog again.

Main problem I gather from this rescue mission is the family that had him
#1 did not neuter him
#2 did not train him except housebreaking
#3 let a small child play with him.
Most animals do not like small children playing with them

Might have to pick up another dog this week also.
That one is Sheltie?
Have to limit my rescue efforts for the next few weeks since I might be traveling to TX or IN.
Can not leave foster dogs or cats unattended for 4 days at a time.

Too cute!  Does Zippy snore?

He used to snore when on his other diet
since switching to vegan have not heard him snore anymore.

thats interesting.  when we adopted polka, the previous caretaker said that she snored a lot, but we've never heard her snore.  maybe its because shes vegan now?

i have a question about number of dogs.  our dog polka spends her days outside playing in our big fenced in yard.  do dogs like living with other dogs?  or do they enjoy having a family/yard to themselves?  we take her for walks and play with her daily.  we certainly give her lovin before and after work, but i feel bad for leaving her to play on her own from 9-3

Almost all do.  Dogs naturally form and live in packs.  It may take a little work for everyone to live together happily under human rules, but it's worth it.
We have 20+ dogs, many came to us full grown and a few had very little previous contact with people, and they peacefully (and happily) co-exist.

Zippy I think is anti social like me.

Actually I am not anti social, just have a social phobia I can not overcome.

I try and take him to interact with other dogs and he does not show much interest.

Had a wild skunk that used to live here for a couple years that Zippy played with.

Also he likes cats. Maybe he does not think he is a dog? :)

Most dogs do enjoy living with other dogs.  As Savvyidler said, dogs form and naturally live in packs.  Dogs make their humans part of their pack.  They make cats part of their pack.  The last few months, Cali, my dog has included Biko my parrot into her pack.  Cali is definitely alpha.  Biko is also Alpha.  They have seemed to come to terms with it and made it a draw.  Cali constantly pulls her bed right beside Biko's cage and sleeps so close that Biko could grab a body part.  Cali very recently has added Hannah Rose, my hedgehog to her pack.  Although as a lower member that hurts when sniffing.  She even growls at the cats if they get too close to Hannah Rose.

I believe dogs like to have another animal companion.  I don't think it has to be another dog.  A cat works well too.  Cali sleeps curled up with two of my cats, licks them and they in turn wash her face and ears.

I also know many animals sleep during the day when mom and dad are at work!

Rereading your thread, a dog would be a better choice as a cat could most likely jump the fence and then run the risk of being killed by a car, getting in a cat fight or having humans do unspeakable acts.  Yes, I believe cats should not be let out to roam free.

Let us know what you decide.

I didn't want to start a whole thread for this.  That's what this thread is for right :)

So, I'm trying to catch a cat.  There is this stray (I think) black cat I've seen a couple of time out back of my house.  He/she won't let me get close.  I saw it go into my neighbor's garage yesterday.  My neighbor's garage door is broken so any small animal could get in.  So I don't know if it's my neighbor's cat or if it's a stray who is "squatting" there.  I haven't seen my neighbor in a while to ask him.  Either way, I'm determined to get this cat and help it out.  I've put out food a couple of times.  I'm hoping that soon it will trust me enough to come closer.  This could take a while.

Any advice?

well. you can get these cat catching cages. We used to have one because there were so many strays. Here its like a 50 dollar deposit at an adoption center, and if you bring the cage back you get the money back. (this was a few years ago though)
They dont harm the cat, they do scare them though. And you might catch raccoons.. we have caught many...

I thought about that, but this is a pretty urban area and I'm afraid people would take it.  There is really no safe place to put it.  I used one before but that was when I lived in a house with a private back yard.  Now I live is a house with just an alley out back.  People walk through our side lawn all the time to get to the alley out back.

Hmm. well then the best i can think of its luring it with food. You could like, throw a sheet on it when it comes to eat and catch it that way? (i've had to do this before too) As long as the cat isnt really fast that is.
