The Everything Pet Thread

I wanted to start this thread to be all about our pets.  Ask questions, help answer questions, tell a funny story about something your cat/dog/ferret/bird/rat, etc did, update everyone on your pet's health, tell us about a new pet, vent, grieve, laugh, etc.  I know I'll be posting here a lot and I hope you'll join me!

the kitties are about 2 months old.  I just saw them snack on my dogs vegan food today!! eek.  could that be making them sick?  and if so, how do i separate their foods?  the cats seem to be able to go everywhere.

First of all, CUTE!

Secondly, I would definitely feed them separately.  Cats should not be eating vegan food--they cannot digest it well at all.  Can you feed Polka a couple meals a day instead of free feeding?  That's really the only way to do it unless you completely separate them.

good idea!  I think I'll try that.  hopefully it will stop all the yukiness.

i figured out the food thing.  the cats food is on top of the crate and the dogs food is outside.

now i have another problem.  i found oompah eating a used condom.  she didnt eat any of the laytex, but there was nothing left inside.  eek.  do you think she'll be fine??  i left her in the bathroom with her brother in case she gets sick.  i dont want her getting sick all over the house.

Yesterday was Cat's one-year death day anniversary.  It feels like sooo long ago and, yet, it seems like he was just here.

I doubt she'll get sick. If she'd eaten any of the actual latex I'd worry a little, but I imagine she'd get more sick from eating broccoli than from "organic human juice." But that is still pretty gross.  ;D

i feel the same way about my stripe.  she died just two weeks before my 21st birthday.  that was two years ago.  i don't think i will ever be over it.  my livejournal was just flooded with emotions about her around that time (and still, but not every minute of everyday... at least not written, anyways).  the last time i cried about stripe was saturday.  so, i definitely know how it feels.

my stripe was my goddess.  she died when she was 24.  here's an entry i posted right after she died, full of pictures of her.  i wish i had gotten my digital camera earlier than a month before it happened.

she actually died on august 30, 2006.  this is that day (including my post of how i was worried about her) http://astoria-zante.livejournal.com/2006/08/30/

how old was cat?  i think you told me once before, but i cannot remember.

Stripe is beautiful!  I'm so sorry.

Cat was around nine - young enough that his being sick caught me off guard.

thank you hh and jm.

i've always wanted a tattoo of stripe.  you can kinda see it in one of the pictures, she has a little zig zag scar on her nose.  my tattoo MUST have this unique little piece in it.  and the exact eye colour.  i just need money.

This reminds me of a Cat story.  The people at the apartment complex whom he bummed food off of after he was abandoned called him Spot, so I used Spot on his vet records as acknowledgement of their kindness.  He shed a lot, so my sister started calling him Hairy, and then Hairy Spotter (for Harry Potter).

Is it weird that I am completely freaked out by the very thought of Pouncival getting older and eventually dying? When I consider that he won't live as long as me, it makes me feel sick to my stomach.

Getting over my dog, Molly, when she passed away last year was awful. Especially because she was only 3. And especially because my parents still have her mom and daddy dogs, and still NO FENCE (Molly got loose one day and came back poisoned).

I couldn't bear to get another dog, because even looking at a puppy made my eyes well up with tears months later. So, I finally broke down and told Josh we had to get a cat. I needed that unconditional love, I needed to give that love back, and I couldn't bear to raise a dog again.

But thinking Pouncival and Etcetera won't be around forever already breaks my heart... and chances are they WILL be here for a very long time (Pounce is about 2 years old, Etcetera is 8-9 months).

I'm crazy, I think. And paranoid. I totally check their butts and ears every couple of days for any sign of.... anything. And I worry if I have to call maintenance and I remind the office to write "DO NOT LET CATS OUT" on the work order.

This post is so incredibly long, sorry. I'm getting all worked up about losing them in 10-15+ years. I'm dumb.

jeana, you're not dumb at all.  i turn into a bawling mess anytime any of my babies have had to go to the vet.  like when hercules, jenny, and shane had to get fixed.  bunnies don't do surgery very well so i was completely on edge until they came home.  and the night we got the kitties, tiger swallowed the tip of the rubber nipple (they were five weeks old, we were bottle feeding them).  the vet said there was a good chance that he would get "stopped up" and require surgery, but since he was so little there was a chance he also wouldn't make it.  apparently it passed through eventually because that little daredevil is still pouncing around fearlessly making his mommy panic every five minutes!

i even cried when they all had to spend the weekend at grandma's house because of some stuff going on at our apartment building.  i missed them so much and the apartment was so empty without the babies!

i also cannot even bring myself to think of a life without them.

when i got the bunnies i was actually looking for pet rats.  but i'm glad i got bunnies because they have lifespans like cats (can live 15-20 years), whereas a rat dies between 1.5-3 years.  i don't think i could handle that.  :(

but if you want to talk about crazy over protective mother awards, hear this:

sometimes when i'm baking i'll go into the bedroom and cuddle with brittney to watch a movie, but then immediately shoot up and run into the kitchen and if brittney asks where i'm going i say, "i need to make sure there isn't a cat in the oven!"

first, i have never seen a cat in our oven.
second, our oven is always closed unless we are putting something in or taking it out.
third, i'm sure we would notice a cat was in the oven when we put stuff in it or took stuff out.

for this reason, i never just turn the oven on and walk away.  i ALWAYS check it first... just in case.

and even once i've determined that there is no cat in the oven, i make brittney help me gather up all of the kitties to make sure no one is missing.

and just because i verified this once, that doesn't mean i won't check it another two times while the oven is in use.

this is only one neurotic quirk of mine when it comes to overprotecting my babies.  believe me, i've got tons!

He, himself, didn't care to have a name, so the name was only be for me.  He lived outside for a long time before he moved in with me.  When I moved to a new apartment I took him with me.  He'd get depressed and listless if he didn't get to go outside, so I left a window open so he could come and go as he pleased, but he also got beat up a lot (he was huge, but not a fighter).  So, when I heard a catfight, I'd go rescue him and call him Cat so if he was in a fight with a neighbor's cat, that person might not directly associate me with any of the involved cats (i.e., think I should be liable for any vet bills).  And it stuck.  "Cat" symbolized his independence.

RD, I love the cat in the oven thing, its cute.

I love the smell of my dogs paws. I felt the need to post this on here since i'm smelling his feet now. They always smell like old corn chips. <3
