I wanted to start this thread to be all about our pets. Ask questions, help answer questions, tell a funny story about something your cat/dog/ferret/bird/rat, etc did, update everyone on your pet's health, tell us about a new pet, vent, grieve, laugh, etc. I know I'll be posting here a lot and I hope you'll join me!

I'm concerned.
In the last several weeks or so, Jonah has decided he can no longer jump off of the bed. He can get on just fine, but when it comes time to get off, he just stands at the edge of the bed and whimpers, frantically running from one side of the bed to another, acting like he wants down, but won't do it. So I end up helping him down, then he's fine...?
We've moved Harry's pillow bed beside the bed for him to jump on, thinking he may not want to jump onto the hardwood, but that hasn't worked yet.....
I don't know what to do....it's so weird and all of a sudden....he can still jump off the couch just fine....
Should I take him to the doctor?
Erin~
How much higher is the bed than the couch? How old is Jonah? He might just be a having a little stiffness. But if it came on suddenly, I'd take him in. You might need to invest in puppy-bed stairs.
yeah, there are a number of things that could be. it could be anything from a previous painful landing has made him reluctant to do it again to a vertebral disk problem that has come on suddenly. if he has any other problems with mobility i would take him in, *especially* if he seems to be getting worse.
So, here goes my own venting.
I took Charlie to the vet last week for her FeLV test and because she had been inappetent and vomiting (she got loose from her collar last time she had a lime dip. sometimes that stuff can make them vomit). They did a couple minor tests, and everything was normal except she was hypothermic and underweight. She actually lost a substantial amount of fat over the 3 days she felt ill. Anyway, I brought her home and she pretty immediately had breathing difficulty - it looked labored, and too fast. I went back and got antibiotics. She still wouldn't eat, so I started force feeding her puréed kitten food and a/d (she hates a/d apparently!).
That was last Thursday. She still won't eat on her own, though she expressed some interest in tuna and chicken baby food (she ate maybe a tsp on her own. i wasn't sure if this was because she doesn't have a chance to be hungry with the force feeding, but she's never hungry in the morning or when i come home from a long day). This morning she vomited all her breakfast pretty much, and I brought her in again.
She's at least 8 weeks old, but only 1.55lb (kittens are supposed to be 2 lb at 8 weeks). I ran more comprehensive tests on her and the vet gave us a complimentary x ray because he was "calibrating the machine" (suuure). It looks like she has granulomatous bronchopneumonia, which is basically what happens when an upper respiratory infection goes untreated. It might be bacterial, it might be fungal (though less likely, but she had high calcium, which suggests fungal infection). So now I have to:
continue force-feeding, which is getting tough because i have days where i'm gone 8-8
give fluids twice a day subcutaneously
give ciprofloxacin twice a day subcutaneously*
give clavamox twice a day orally
but at least i can stop the ringworm baths.
*i gave her cipro for this evening, and she was about the angriest kitten to get a subcu injection.
because of all this stuff, i pretty much have a pharmacy in my room right now. i have a fluids bag hanging on a clothes hanger, syringes everywhere, needles, etc. i'm a real junkie!
it kind of bugs me, though, that i still don't have an answer about her vomiting/etc. technically any illness can make an animal inappetent, but her pneumonia isn't so bad that that was even the reason why she was brought in (i was treating her with antibiotics already), and it's been a week. that and if it's a fungal infection her meds will have no effect. =/ because she hated getting the cipro injection so much, i'm kind of apprehensive of giving her fluids; i have to give 20mL (2/3 ounce) at a time, slowly. uhhh yeah. i'm going to get some cat-handling skills from this.
her being sick so chronically is really stressing me out. i worry about her all the time, and it's been difficult focusing on my studies =( plus, because of having to feed her (i can't give too much at once), i've pretty much been not getting enough sleep for a week. and i like my sleep.
fb, that's awful....I'm so sorry you're having all these problems with Charlie. Honestly my thoughts are with you.
Are they querying a pseudomonal infection? Otherwise I'm not sure what additional benefit cipro would be over co-amoxiclav (sorry I haven't googled clavamox, but from the brand name I'm assuming co-amoxiclav)
The only reason I'm asking is because of the subcut admin......although why not oral? If she's able to take the co-amoxiclav orally, then can't you get cipro orally? IDK maybe I'm missing something to do with kitty ADME.
yeah, clavamox is the animal version of "augmentin" (maybe just a US name).
i think the cipro is because kittens tend to get mycoplasma or chlamydia, and in vitro it has decent enough action against both. but i've also read that's not the case in vivo. also, depending on the mycoplasma they can have really varying MICs. On top of that, i have to watch how much cipro i give because of her being "growing" (well, she hasn't grown, but still) and it being a fluoroquinolone. =/
as far as route of administration, i don't know. i think they simply had cipro injectable and not tablets, and it might have not been worth ordering any considering she's been vomiting still to some degree. though i can tell the shots burn =( so i started injected them second, after her bolus of fluids.
after looking into it, it seems like the thing to get for mycoplasma/chlamydia is doxycycline or azithromycin. they mentioned amikacin, but i'm not a fan of the ototoxicity risks, though the effects on cartilage of tetracyclines/quinolones aren't great either. she actually had a huge appetite this morning (woo!) so i'll see how she does. the vet has told me that he'll prescribe what i want (uh), so if it comes down to it i might request them to order something else and itraconazole (i mean, she has ringworm anyway, so even if the infection isn't fungal it would still have a purpose).
for the most part kitty ADME is different because they have a really inefficient glucuronyl transferase, so some drugs are way more toxic & and have a longer half life for them. they also tend to get renal disease at the drop of a hat, no one really knows why on that one. but, i think for these antibiotics they're pretty well tolerated, though amikacin has some reported renal toxicity.
poor Charlie - I'm sorry, fb :(
Jonah is 7 - and the bed is pretty high - we have doggie steps but both dogs refuse to use them....we got them for Harry because his legs are too short to jump on the bed....
last night Jonah didn't even come to bed....he slept all night in his chair....which made me sad...
I've been massaging his hips and shoulders and he really likes it (he usually isn't much for excessive touching or petting) so I think maybe its arthritis?
I'll give him another week or see and see if anything changes....
((((fb & Charlie))))
((((erin & Jonah))))
I know it isn't much help, but I am thinking positive thoughts for all 4 of you.
So we took Jonah to the vet yesterday - he hadn't gotten any better and my mom (she watched them while we were in Chicago) said he had been very lethargic and unhappy the whole time we were gone.....
According to the vet, he has a strained back - he somehow pulled a muscle and had been compensating by using other muscles, causing them to be very sore and over-worked....
They gave him an anti-inflammatory and a pain killer - which have seemed to help tremendously already - but he's not allowed to jump up onto the couch or bed - he's supposed to be resting - but now he thinks he's all better, so he can run, jump and play again....keeping him off the couch is virtually impossible - but we gated off the bedroom last night so he couldn't get on the bed....he sat there and cried for a few minutes which broke my heart, but he finally laid down on the papasan cushion I laid out for him.....he was pissed at us this morning though!
We have to take him back in 10 days or so for a check-up.....
We think Olen got sick from drinking some lake water. : ( He projectile vomited, then vomited all night, and is having water like diarrhea. :'( :'( Very, very sad.

Gracie's 8 pups turned 3 yesterday! :)>>>
Taking them all in nearly killed us, but now I can't imagine a day without them.
A picture from the day we took them in:

Happy belated birthday, Gracie's pups! I can't believe it's been 3 years!
Olen hates/loves (?) when we crouch toward him. He squirms and squirms.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6IWT8oSwksY
the reason why he is squirming is because your taking on a dominant position when your approaching him, like your sneaking up on him. We asked our vet about this because my daughter likes to sneak up on our family's border collie shelby and she acts the same way. Take it as a good thing, he doesn't act like he's trying to be a dominant pack member :) cute dog too btw :)

Thanks. Yeah, that makes sense except we don't sneak up on him! It looks like I am in that video (from behind the couch) but from any space around him, he does it. It's only when crouching. He does the same way when I speak in a certain tone. hehe I take it that he likes it in some way, because the end result is always kisses. : )
jonah does that when I approach...he just wants his belly rubbed....

haha. you know what's weird? Olen doesn't really care about belly rubs.
Olen is such a handsome boy, what a charmer! He reminds me a lot of my girl Blue.

The other dog in this pic also does the submissive squirming thing. Cute up until she pees a little.
Oh, who am I kidding? I still think it's cute. :)
