The Everything Pet Thread

I wanted to start this thread to be all about our pets.  Ask questions, help answer questions, tell a funny story about something your cat/dog/ferret/bird/rat, etc did, update everyone on your pet's health, tell us about a new pet, vent, grieve, laugh, etc.  I know I'll be posting here a lot and I hope you'll join me!

so I found a vet....called Doctor Nick!  That kinda made my day!

But the rest of th consultation did NOT make my day.  So Gary's teeth are fine, might possibly be causing the probs but unlikely and when she was examined, everything seemed fine - so the vet recommended bloods tests and a urine to make sure - which I went for.

Well the urine test was done immediately - I can't remember what the test was but the 'normal' range is 20 to over 50, and Gary's was 16.  5-12 would indicate renal failure.  So according to the urine test she hasn't actually got renal failure but may be on the way to it.
The blood results will confirm whether it is mild renal impairment or not...but the vet thinks it is.  So we got a couple of sachets of the special kidney food to see if she likes it.

Poor Gary!!
I hope she's ok....

Jonah is at the vet for his diabetes insipidis test today....8 hours....poor little baby.  I told him this would be the last one.  If they want to do anymore tests, they're gonna do it while I'm there - I'm over this all day shit.

Erin - Do you get the results this afternoon?

Shell -   :'(  I'm waiting impatiently for Thursday.

Yeah, I think so.  I really don't think he has diabetes insipidis though.  I really think it's either Cushings or his thyroid.  We also found a lump behind his left arm, kinda on his ribs - I told the lady to have the doctor take a look at it - I don't know if that's where his thyroid would be or not...

yeah, it's just a fatty cyst according to the vet.  I'll get his results from the urine tests tomorrow.

Good news for the first issue.  I came back here to check up on Jonah before turning off my computer.  Tomorrow will be a big day with both Jonah's and Gary's results.

ooooh poor Gary and poor Jonah!  I hope the vets figure out what's going on with both of them soon! : /

The vet just called - she is almost positive that it's diabetes insipidus because Jonah was never able to concentrate his urine, even after being deprived of water all day.  She wants him to go in for an ultrasound, even though she said she's positive there isn't anything wrong with his organs....and this ultrasound costs $400 and he has to be sedated - I said NO.  That makes no sense.  If you're positive it's unnecessary, why do it???

So for now, he'll be on an antibiotic to make sure he doesn't have any infections, and I ordered him a thyroid supplement that she recommended since his is very low.  And we're going to do a trial of the diabetes medicine.  It's $100 per 5 ml....I'm not sure how much that is, but I know it won't last long.  He gets 2 drops in the eye for 5 days.  If his urine begins to concentrate while on the medicine, then we have our answer.  If it doesn't, we're back to square one.
Then I guess we're going with the thyroid...

This is all so frustrating.

eta:  Vet was wrong, the drops are $195 for 7ml ?!?!?!

oh Erin.....how frustrating.  I was really hoping that you'd be able to find out exactly what was going on.  I think it's almost the worst thing the not knowing.

Fingers crossed the diabetes meds work....although it would end up very expensive, but at least Jonah would be happier.

I agree about the ultrasound.  If the vets is positive it wouldn't show anything, why go for it, especially if he has to be sedated.

still no news from the vet about Gary, but it's only 9am.

Doesn't the vet know people around the world are waiting for Gary news?!?

erin - I think there are something like 20 to 25 "standard" drops in a ml, so if you're using two drops a day, it'll last 50 days / nearly two months.  That's frustrating that they couldn't tell you more.  This reminds me of what we went through with mdv's cat Houdini.

ha, I KNOW!!

I'm even breaking rules and keeping my phone on me around the hospital.  I figure if doctors can carry phones against the rules, I can do it for one day too!

PS not sure on actual rules regarding phones, it just feels wrong to have my phone on me at work!

Jeez!!  Definitive on time answers would be best for Johan and Gary!

Erin ~ I sure hope that the first course of action fixes Johan.  I hate it when medical professionals suggest doing something even though they know it is unnecessary!  It's like they want to guilt trip you into spending more and more money when they know it isn't going to amount to anything.

not good news.  Bad kidney failure.....I'll try to go into it more when I'm not crying. (or HH may be able to tell you a bit if she wants to)
