The Everything Pet Thread

I wanted to start this thread to be all about our pets.  Ask questions, help answer questions, tell a funny story about something your cat/dog/ferret/bird/rat, etc did, update everyone on your pet's health, tell us about a new pet, vent, grieve, laugh, etc.  I know I'll be posting here a lot and I hope you'll join me!

Well done the vet! Hope TD is soon back on her paws.

New topic: For bird lovers there are a couple of excellent websites out there that are helping me vary Sweetheart's diet. I just discovered he LOVES a slice of tomato!! Mango, he was like "meh..." but he went crazy for the tomato.

This website is English-translated-from-German but lots of good info. He answers questions, too! (In English).

Great news Tony Danza  :)
Hopefully both Tony Danza & mdv had a good night rest cuz it's not just the fur baby that we worry about.
positive thoughts & healing energy  :)>>>

I'm on your posse if you need to go teach them a lesson.  I hope the vet is better than the staff.  Major  >:( !

I think all vet offices are like that (human doctors too!) try not to let it irritate you too much.  Even though they hadn't fed her yet, I'm sure they gave her subQ  fluids and that would really make a big difference. I'm sure Tony Danza is on the mend!

Yeah.  Now that you mention it, doesn't hydration help with food, so you want an animal to be hydrated first?  I'm trying to think back to Cat, but he didn't have a tube, so maybe if you're inserting food through a tube it doesn't make a difference?

Poor Tony Danza.  Did you get the test results back, or is the staff still being curt?

That's nice of the vet tech to stay overnight with her.... Sounds like a nice vet office that cares. I REALLY hope she comes home tomorrow, as long as she is doing better. I think the feeding tube was definaltey the right way to go!

(((mdv))) that is not what we were hoping to hear.  :'(  She is in my thoughts

I am so sorry to hear that.  Have they been able to pinpoint the diagnosis?

It's good that the vet is working with you on all treatment fronts.  Will anyone be in the office tomorrow, on Sunday, to watch her?

((((mdvegan)))) I sure know how hard it is when our babies aren't feeling well and I will be keeping her in my thoughts and hope she is feeling well soon! It's great that your vet is on board with alternative remedies. We've used them for ours with great success in the past. We worked with Dr. Gloria Dodd. http://www.holisticvetpetcare.net/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=SFNT
She's been experiencing some troubling interference from the FDA for a while now, which REALLY upsets me! She can come off sounding a little unorthodox, but because of her treatment plan, I had 2 more years with my baby!

mdv I'm so sorry.... when can you bring her home? its a judgment call on your part, but sometimes modern medicine is useful and sometimes it does more harm than good. will the vet show you how to work the feeding tube so she can be at home?

Does she glare?  I knew Cat was having a good day when he glared.

does anyone know about the harmful affects of steroids for dogs?  my puppy had a pretty bad ear infection and one starting in the other ear.  our vet gave her a steroid cream to rub in her ears.  they made her ears really sensitive and red, but her ears now look/smell MUCH better.  i was/is weary of giving her steroids, but i didnt have any information about it at the vets.  i told them that i have a homeopathic dog care book that said to use almond oil to clean out the ears and the vet said that she really likes using homeopathic methods, but thought that almond oil would harm the ear more than do good.  so.  it seems like she would be open to suggestions about homeopathic methods if i say that im uncomfortable giving her steroids and such.  i just want to go in there with some information next time.

she also sent me home with dog treats made out of meat and some chemicals to put in her water.  i havent told her that polkas vegetarian yet.  i worry that she wont understand.

wow!! thanks so much for all of the information!  i will be reading A LOT tonight.  are ear infections usually caused by something internal like an allergy or what she eats?  or could it be something as simple as being dirty?  she plays in the dirt/mud every day.  her favorite activity is digging holes and then rubbing her head in them.  haha, its really very cute.  we never cleaned her ears after she did this because it seemed like the dirt would rub off.  but could that have caused the ear infections?

the vet also said that when looking at the ear gunk under a microscope that it was a lot of yeast.  does that tell me anything about how the infection was started?
