Spaying questions

Ok...so, a friend of mine has yet to get his dog fixed. I know for sure that sometime soon she is going to have her first heat. I do not want this to happen. Since said individual is not taking this issue as seriously as I am; I offered to take her in (took a few days off) to the county free spay & neuter clinic (of course will make donation). It has been so long since I've actually had to take an animal in that I don't remember what to do/not do the night before and morning of.
Are they allowed food or drink? When and when not? (Bad grammar, I know). I should probably call tomorrow morning and make an appointment?? If they have openings, I'd really like to get there ASAP. :err: Advice??
yeah, call ASAP, because an animal in heat requires a lot more surgical skill then one not in heat...some vets wont even do it or charge more. And, i know at least here in my town, there are month long or longer waiting lists for programs like these. :-\
i think its usually no food/water sfter about 8 pm the night before...so thats a good 12 + hours.

Generally no food after 7:00/8:00 pm, no water after midnight. I try to feed who ever is having surgery at about 6:00pm or 6:30pm.
Of course, everyone suffers for it because no one gets food or water after that time.
You are doing a wonderful thing. Spays generally go up in price the longer one waits (although you are going to a free spay/neuter clinic). The least expensive before the first heat, more expensive after the first heat and more, once again after puppies. The surgery is a little more complicated/take longer after heats and a pups. Way more complicated after pups because now, there are pups that need to be found good homes. Although of course that is not why the price goes up.
The worst spay I ever assisted in was a ten year old dog that 'accidentally' got out. She got pregnant and was in distress. We actually went in to do a C section. The vet and I removed 4 or 5 beautiful 'dead' puppies. I started to cry and the vet had tears in his eyes. He was so angry at the irresponsibility of the owners. This poor old dog was such a mess inside, he spayed her at the same time. The people didn't want her spayed. The vet and I were both happy that we saved the mom dog and prevented this horrible event happening again.

I agree...I wanted to add that it's best to feed early in the day the day before....and take away the water after midnight...
Day of the spay...ice chips only when home...a bit of water later on... From experience (regardless of what some vets say with regards to feeding that day)...if they are fed the same day as the spay...they're going to throw it all up. :P
I just wanted to add as well....you are AWESOME for doing that! So like me, as I do the same thing for people...(but me...I suck)! ::)
I'm not all that awesome....especially compared to the people here on VW that inspire me!! :winktongue: I'll be caring for her the next couple of days. She looks so sad with that collar thing on. :-\ And the county changed around some things, so it was a low cost clinic, but I'm still glad I took her in. While I was there I helped refer a guy to some lab rescues I know of in Florida (because he just has to have a chocolate lab). 8)

Shit! When I wasn't looking (apparently) the dog licked/pulled out one of the stitches. :ohno: It'll be ok, right?? The only reason I left the cone off is because she hadn't gone for them since Tuesday when she was spayed. Ugh!! :-\
Lauren, just keep an eye on the rest of the stitches. If any more of them start pulling out, then you'll probably need to take her in to get them looked at. Also, just look for infection. I don't think one lick is going to doom her to infection, but the mouth is a pretty filthy place, so just look out for unusual coloration or swelling or weeping (the wound, that is, not the dog).
When Little Dog had knee surgery, he was so flipping miserable with the cone collar, so we only put it on him when we weren't around to monitor. Granted, he had casts on both back legs, so he wasn't able to reach much, but if we weren't paying attention, he tried!
Yeah, thats the thing. I had it off of her pretty much the day after surgery and she really never went in that direction. If I left the house, I'd put the cone on her and at night...except last night and this happened. Meh...I guess I will just watch it closely now.
