Roll Call!

Edit.  The following intro is a bit old.  I unfortunately ended my long term relationship after nearly ten years.  Just couldn't be worked out.  I got the house and the dogs and am relatively happy now.  I finished my online RN to BSN program and am a genuine college graduate at the age of 48!!!  Woot!

Edit #2 - I finally reached the ripe old age of 50 and am feeling fabulous!  I always get the "you don't look 50" thing, and I attribute that to a healthy diet and lifestyle.

I deleted my Myspace page.  I do have Facebook and love to have vegwebbers for friends. You can private message me and I'll give you my name.  Or you can find me on the vegweb fan page.

Edit #3 - Finally went vegan.  The last couple of years, I've been slowly getting there, replacing household and personal products with vegan items such as vegan soaps, candles, cleaners.  I've bought vegan shoes, belts and wallets.  I'm loving it!  Decided to let my hair go naturally grey instead of coloring it so I don't get the "you don't look 50" thing as much anymore.  LOL  I now have a desk job in the admit-transfer center and hate it hate it hate.  I just can't be stuck behind a desk, and I'm the lookout for something else.

Edit #4 - Found a position at the hospital I currnetly work on an ortho floor.  I think I'll like returning to the bedside and not a desk job.  w00t

It's been a while and I thought it might be nice to for everyone who posts here to tell a little about yourself.  I took a little sabbatical from this site (went back to eating meat for two years..........bleech), but lurked from time to time, but have been a part of this site for gee, can it be 8 or more years????  But I don't know a lot of you.

I am a nurse.  I am a male. (yes, a person who will remain nameless called me a "she".)  I am gay.  I've been in a monogamous relationship for the last nine years with a great guy who now travels a lot. I was an ovo-lacto veg*n for about 12 years before slipping, I plead insanity.

I'm currently in an online program to go from an ADN RN to BSN RN and hope to finally graduate from college at the age of 48 next year.

I have a very boring blog here:  http://allnurses.com/forums/journal.php?do=showjournal&j=13

You're turn.  Tell me your business!

Hey VegWebsters, I'm Emily. I'm turning twenty tomorrow. I had another username on this site "brownknee" but deleted when I went through a popular phase of mine of not wanting anything to do with the good ol' world wide web. Anyway, I'm back with little to offer other than a real silly hXc username. I'm currently living in New York, bouncing back between Middletown and Cornwall. Earlier this month I was supposed to fly out to Olympia, Washington to "start fresh" but that idea has been postponed. I'm really itching to travel ANYWHERE but I'm falling short of ideas so help me out and give me some!

welcome back! i was wondering where you had gone off to!

I've been a member of VegWeb for a few years, about the same time I made the switch from oco-lacto veggie to vegan in Feb 2005.  I'm a 25y.o. queer womyn that has lived in a couple places across Western and Central NY, now living in the Rochester area with my dyke boifriend, cat, and rabbit.  I work in community affairs and public policy for a well-known women's health and reprodutive health provider and hold a dual bachelor's degree in Women's Studies and English Writing Arts.  Amazingly, I've been able to make some sort of pretty kick-ass career out of feminism and poetry.  My favorite meat substitute of the moment is seitan.  My favorite authors of the moment are Margaret Atwood and Audre Lorde.  My guilty pleasures are cooking breakfast in the nude (awesome!) and scarfing on Tofutti Almond Bark.

I was invited over to Q&A by a posting member...so happy to meet you all!

So I've been reading lurking around vegweb for years and I've made a few posts, but until now I never bothered to introduce myself. Guess it's about time I did.

I'm a 22-year-old artist and I live in a little hippie commune in Olympia, Washington. I've been vegetarian for 11 years and go through phases of being more-or-less vegan sometimes. My housemates have many different dietary restrictions so we do a lot of creative cooking around here. Eating and cooking delicious veggie meals is one of my greatest joys in life!

I'm definitely a dog person. Right now I look after dogs for a living, which is a mixed blessing. I'm very pro-pet. My own dog - who unfortunately lives with my parents - is an 11-year-old shepherd/collie mix and he's the best dog ever. (Not just my opinion, true fact!)

My favorite foods include lentils, spicy curries, nuts and seeds, salsa, guacamole, berries, all greens, quinoa, pancakes, beans, tacos, buckwheat, tempeh, garlic, chocolate, fennel, broccoli, persimmons, cornbread, artichokes... well, I could go on. Just about the only foods I dislike are peppers and onions, and even then I'm flexible.

Anyhow, vegweb has introduced me to a lot of great food. Thanks everyone!!

Well after lurking about and posting a few things, thought I should do the intro thing as well.... I'm a 25 y/o pesco-veggie who was raised by a father who decided to go veg after working on a hog farm in the 70's and a mother who was tired of cleaning the carcasses her brothers and step-dad brought in from hunting. I was raised with the philosophy of "If you can't kill it and clean it yourself, then you shouldn't eat it!" I think if more people were presented with that idea, more would find it hard to eat "old Bessie". We mainly ate lacto-ovo, with the occasional piece of fish (maybe 2 times a month). I am really grateful to my parents in helping to instill in me healthy eating habits, and a love for veggies!! I still can't eat veggie dogs, or cold cuts because they smell too much like the real thing, but give me veggie snausage ANY TIME!!! It is kind of strange being raised a veg, because I don't have the cravings most vegs do at my age. I am very glad I've found this site!!! I went to school for restaurant management, learned how to cook meat, then reworked the recipes into veggie at home!! Among my many hobbies, I find great pleasure in tinkering with recipes to suit different "needs". All my friends know that if they're hungry, they can eat at my place and not be afraid of getting sick!! (vegan, diabetic, celiac, soy allergy, milk allergy, vegan w/ legume allergy, etc) As such I have a house full of food and new "toys" are constantly coming into the pantry. I'm working on making a living working with dietitians and "chefs" (if you can call them that) in "institutions" on formulating/modifying recipes to meet the needs of special needs diets while still be on the cheap.

Hi everyone! I'm a 30 year old new vegan from Western NY. I was ovo-lacto for 4 years making the leap. My DH is omni and believes I'm going through a phase. Overall, he is pretty supportive and tries his best. He hates all vegetables so I have to be really creative in the kitchen. Mostly we shop, prepare and eat separately.  :(

We are active in rabbit rescue and have some wonderful rabbit companions. We also have a cat who grew up with bunny friends and will fight for his share of green leaf lettuce and banana. I love VegWeb so far and am really thankful for the advice and support.

Hola hola...

Vegweb forms an integral part of my cookbook-on-the-internets and like others, I've mooched off of VW for some time now, so it seems appropriate to introduce myself to those from whom I take so much.

I'm a grad student in MA and although I do heart New England, I'm originally (and intermittently proud of being) from Nebraska, where I went vegetarian 11 years ago and totally vegan about 3 years ago.  Indeed! it is possible to live vegan on the Great Plains, at least near centers of civilization (few and far between, granted).  I spend my time here reading, teaching, writing, second-guessing my writing, and defending my midwestern usage of the words "sack" and "pop."
According to my school's registrar, I'll have a PhD in political science by 2011.  Speaking from the middle of my third year, I can say that estimate is whimsically optimistic.  If you have a few extra thousand dollars you don't know what to do with, I'm happy to accept any and all monies to fund a dissertation.

My wonderful bf accepted a challenge a year and a half ago to go vegan for the summer and, thanks to my superior nagging, has stuck with it ever since.  We entertain each other by making delicious vegan messes in our tiny tiny kitchen... One of his sisters got him Veganomicon for the holidays and I swiftly appropriated it.
We live with our beautimous cat who, with her mighty thumbs, plays a mean game of foil-ball soccer.  She is currently occupying my lap, having decided that I had paid sufficient attention to my laptop.

I am obsessed with the following foods: avocados, tofu scramble, mashed potatoes, aloo gobi (!!!), cilantro, nutritional yeast, punkin pie, cream-filled pastries, coffee in large amounts, and any whole grain fruit and nut muffin.  There is a cheesecake in my fridge whose days are numbered... I'd be surprised if that number is greater than one.

Hi Nuchita, what a fabulous introduction of yourself!  Welcome.  You seem very cool and I look forward to your posts. :)

Nuchita! I too am from Kansas (commonly mistaken for Nebraska, but we know better, don't we), live in MA, say "pop," and love avocados! You should hang out here more frequently - welcome to the dark side!  ;D

sweet! midwest avocado love on the east coast ..and I see you're my age too.. either we're doppelgangers, or.. did I just blow your mind?  haha. :)

on the topic of regional-ness.. I know there are two vegan meetups around - one in Boston and one out my way in Northampton/Florence, but since the meetings seem to fall at bad times for me (and I'm still vaguely wary of meeting anyone from "the onlines") I haven't been able to make one.. they seem probably cool, esp. the one out here, which is usually a potluck.  You haven't perchance attended one have you?  I'd love to hear the dirt.

and kudos on retaining "pop".. it's really a good thing I don't drink it anymore because I can't tell you how much crap I get for that when it does come up.. sometimes I slip up and want to say "soda," then I remember I'm not from 1940.

After seeing this thread at the top of the list for so long I finally clicked on it and it was so interesting to read everyone's stories!  Vegetarians/vegans are such interesting people  ;D

I'm a just-turned 23 year old and I have been vegetarian for almost 5 years now.  My decision to become veg can be traced back to when my dad had a heart attack about 6 years ago.  After that happened my whole family had a wake up call and started eating a lot healthier, and I noticed how much I was enjoying the greater variety of healthy food.  I started to gradually give up red meat, which I had never been a fan of anyway, and I haven't touched beef since reading Fast Food Nation.  Chicken was the hardest thing for me to give up, but I no longer miss it at all.  I love being vegetarian because of the variety of food I get to eat and the creativity that's involved in cooking vegetarian food (and people  think we are deprived because we don't eat meat!)
I'm not vegan, but have noticed that I'm developing an intolerance to milk products so it may be a natural next step.  If so, I know Vegweb will be an even greater source of support for me.

Gosh..so many posts! Maybe I'll read them all..
I'm Allison, and I've been vegetarian since 1997 and vegan since Oct 27, 2007. I'm 23 (24 in April), and I've been married since April 28, 2007! My husband and I became vegan together, and it's been the best lifestyle decision of both of our lives (and in our life together). I'm a 1st year Neuroscience Ph.D. student at the University of Montana in Missoula, MT, and I've already encountered many ups and downs. It's definitely a hard place to be -vegan and scientist at the same time, but I will work/hope to be able to make a difference in the animal research/testing world.
My husband and I moved from Texas to Montana in July 07, and we love it here! MT and TX are two VERY different environments, but Missoula is fairly (and much more so than TX) conducive to the vegan lifestyle.
I am interested to meet/know if there are any other vegan scientists/researchers/medical field people here that I can share experiences/thoughts with. Please reply so that we can talk!
It can be pretty difficult feeling so outnumbered, but I know that I can make a difference (once I make it closer to the top!)  :)

My wonderful bf accepted a challenge a year and a half ago to go vegan for the summer...

I am the "wonderful bf."  Having given into the nagging, I have successfully stuck with being vegan.  And I love it, besides the creativity of cooking, the health benefits have been great.  Although I am new to the VW boards, I have enjoyed many of the delicious creations on here.  I was vegetarian 11 years ago, but going off to college and trying to fight off my Italian grandmother with her traditional meat based foods (nearly forced food down my throat) I gave up being vegetarian.  It is only now in the last 2 years that my Irish heritage - surviving on a strict potato diet - shines through to beat out my Italian traditions, that I have become a vegan.

As for my biography, (I am never good at these things), I am finishing up a masters program in labor studies (that's pro-union) so I am not exactly a fan of capitalism, which is why I love being vegan as I end up buying less and making more at home.  Although I reside in western Massachusetts I do claim Boston as my home, as I have NO pride in my original home state of New Jersey (aka the trash dump south of New York).  I do know many that hold pride in the state of NJ but I am not one of them.

It is the cold weather of New England which I enjoy the most, only wish it would snow year 'round.  The cold weather makes for great cooking and baking conditions, as oil heat is to expensive to keep on, so cooking is a nice heating source.  One of my favorite things to make is pizza (it also heats up the small kitchen pretty quick) and with the use of an old family pizza sauce recipe and veganrella I have successfully made pizza that I think could fool my Italian mother.  I have been told that I ramble on sometimes so if you are still reading, I commend you; if not, you've already learned.
