And then it happened - Vegetarian/Vegan Bloopers - Take 1

One Sunday morning - I was doing some work with Amma's Kitchen - helping to feed the homeless at a local shelter.  Some of the food that's prepared gets carried over to another outdoor location for feeding the homeless, and some of the food stays at the shelter to feed current occupants.

After spending some time/energy contributing to making food - it's only natural to work up an appetite and it's considered ok for the helpers to take a small porton.  I didn't want to take any of the pancakes or eggs because i was trying to be dilligent about following a vegan diet.  Then i came across some yummy sausages.  I took one and it really helped to quench my hunger at the moment.

Fast forward about 20 minutes.  I was one of the people who fed the shelter occupants (instead of heading over to the outdoor location).  When serving food to the occupants, one of the people asked about the sausages to which i replied "that it's vegetarian".  Of course, as if you couldn't already see this coming -I was advised of my error, it turns out i was wrong, they were chicken sausages - ouch!

I had presumed that all food served/prepared by Amma's Kitchen (the name of the organization i was with - not the name of the shelter) was vegetarian.  I was correct actually ~but~ there is also additional food prepared at the same time, by the shelter for it's occupants - everything is shared in one kitchen though, and i was not aware of the same.

So, on that day - i must admit not only did i have a chicken sausage but.....ignorant at the time, i liked it!

...sure, hit me when im down... i see how u iz.

when I first went vegan, I was devouring the Quorn brand "chicken" breasts.  I ate lots of those before I read the 3rd ingredient was egg whites, sometimes ignorance is bliss!  I really loved those things!!

Boca makes a pretty darned good chik'n'burger (speaking of which, i haven't had in awhile - darn, now i want one).  As far as I can remember, they are vegan - they're about $3/box (for 4 patties) at Krogers

What's crazy is that Boca keeps changing the ingredients. They would be vegan, then there'd be eggs, then they'd be vegan... one store I go to (the coop) has Boca chik'n patties with egg in them and the other store (shaw's) has them without egg.  They didn't have them at all for months though. Maybe what's happening is they're reformulating the recipe because they've committed to eliminating eggs in their products. But I dont' know why different ingredient lists are on boxes that look the same. It's really really annoying.

ok - THANK YOU!!!

when i used to buy these (i haven't bought them in awhile - not counting yesterday when i bought them again because i had a bug up my butt - which technically is still vegan because i didn't actually eat the bug....) - i thought i was going crazy because i noticed the same thing, but then i thought maybe i just imagined it because i'm certifiably crazy in so many other ways anyhow - i just figured it's par for the course.

so that's one less thing for me to crazy i'm think about  :D - that i can now scratch off my list.

Now, if you could only help me with the other 1,037,824.82 items - that'd be *swell* :)

I don't think I've ever felt as sick as I do right now looking at that picture.
And I used to pick up poo for a living.

regarding the bocca chikn confusion:

for some reason, (here at least) the boxes marked "all natural ingredients" are not vegan (egg whites) and the boxes marked "all organic ingredients" are vegan.

i don't get it, either, and trying to explain it to a store to make sure they get the right one is super confusing and never successful.  we buy ours from target because they seem to be the only one that carries the "organic/vegan" ones.  they also usually have the chikn nuggets which we like better, but they go long periods of time without having them.  when they do have them, we stock up!

Boca Chickn is based on box color and organics.  The brown box organic version has egg.  The red box regular version is vegan.  Just remember to always look at the ingredients and avoid the brown boxes.

A longggg time ago when i was vegetarian and just starting out i think i would get fried rice from this chinese place, the "vegetarian" one. The 2nd or 3rd time i got it, there was meat in it, all overrr and i ate a piece. I called them and asked why there was meat in my rice. They said they put it in all the vegetarian friend rice to give it flavor.... I later learned they did that with their tofu also (i got insanely sick off of it too!) Bleh!

And i dont even want to know what is in that pot the bacon/twinkie stonehenge is in!

Sarah - that's wickedly funny and terrible at the same time - they use umm MEAT to flavor their umm VEGETARIAN dish....ugh and wtf?!?

Reminds me of the perhaps biggest coup of all time...i'm happy to say that although i'm no stranger to fast food - at the time - i wasn't a big Mickey D's fan so i never really ate there ...but just wondering - how many of us got caught with the beef tainted Mickey Ds fries - that was ... just .. friggin ... ridiculous!!!

I was SO angry when I found out about those damned fries. Then I realized that there had to be a reason that, every time I ate those fries, my stomach would reject everything else I ate that day. Stupid fast food :(

Well, I guess I don't feel so bad now, seeing that others have made "vegan bloopers".

I love trying new stuff and it sometimes turns out not so great. Life is usually better with variety but on one occasion...  I decided to try one of those funky looking new drinks at a cafe. It was in a soda-like bottle and had a fruity sounding name. I soon was reminded of the reason I <i>almost</i> always check labels. One big swig was enough to tell me that I had a mouthful of cow juice about to go down the hatch. I gagged and sputtered and nearly made a disgusting mess on the floor, luckily the offending nastiness made it back into the bottle and quickly into the nearest trash can. I couldn't swallow for a good hour after that.

One thing I found out that day though is that milk was always an acquired taste that I never knew was really disgusting until I became a vegan. No turning back, ever.

And the McDonald's fries, yes, they got me too.  I don't consider that a blooper on my part though - more of a nefarious deception by Ronald. I don't even drink their soda anymore for fear there's lard in it. <shiver>

I have several almost-vegan-bloopers. A few times I've been looking at Chinese/Thai menus, ordering delivery, and I notice that they have several types of fried rice, one "egg fried rice," and another "vegetable fried rice." I ask if the vegetable one has egg. Response: yes, they all have egg. Then what's the difference between the vegetable and the egg ones? Response: they're the same. What???! Why do you have two listings? This has happened with several places. *One* time though, it turned out the people at the restaurant actually made their own fried rice (a lot of the time it's frozen mixes... that's why they all look the same.), and she offered to make it without the egg. Best. ever.

Anyway, an actual vegan blooper:
Last year, my college's dining commons expanded to have more food stations. One was a rice/noodle bowl type station, where you can get various rices or noodles, with either chicken, beef or tofu, and teriyaki, indian curry, or thai curry sauce. I LOVE thai curry, and asked if the sauce was vegetarian (sometimes there's fish sauce). The server said yes, and I got the curry. In fact, I got the curry several times. It took me a while to figure out why, on the same days I'd get the curry, I felt like I was going to die. My tummy felt AWFUL, like a different kind of awful. Finally I correlated the two.
I worked for the cafe on campus (same company), so one day when getting supplies at the dining commons, I decided to check out the ingredients for the sauce (prepackaged). Not only did it contain fish sauce (I'm guessing the server assumed it was vegetarian), but instead of all coconut milk, it was more than half CREAM. What's cream doing in thai curry? Is coconut milk too expensive? Why would there be so much dairy in a dish that comes from a place where 90% of people are lactose intolerant? I mean, not that I thought it was super authentic, but the idea of a sh*tload of cream in a curry sauce still blows my mind.
As it turns out, I've become lactose intolerant over the years. Tough way to find out...

Another one: years ago, my sister and I found this boba place that advertised that they can do soymilk for their smoothies as an alternative to dairy. I got a green tea smoothie with the soymilk substitute, and while I was drinking it later, I noticed it tasted really sour for some reason. My sister tried it, and she said it was definitely dairy (my sister switched back and forth between soy and dairy from time to time). She called the cafe, and it turns out while they susbtitute soymilk for milk, everything still has dairy ice cream in it. -_-

Wow, I forgot about this incident until I just stumbled on this thread again...

A couple months ago I went to my favourite restaurant in town for dinner with my mom. They are famous for their vegan chocolate "cheesecake". I noticed they also had a peanut butter & chocolate cheesecake on the dessert menu (something I think was new) and asked the server if it was vegan. She said she thought so, but would check, then came back and said it was, so I ordered a slice. DELICIOUS. Whoever decided to combine PB & chocolate is one of my heroes.

Anyway, I went back a couple of weeks later and thought I'd double check again about the PB cheesecake, because the first time, the server was new and didn't seem too sure. That time, the server's face told me before she even spoke that the PB cheesecake was not even close to being vegan...! She said "I'm not even going to tell you what's in it" to preserve my sanity, so apparently it was filled with animal products...eek. Really too bad because it was delicious, and I'm sure it wouldn't be hard to make a vegan version (they make everything themselves).

Anyway, now I stick with the tried and true chocolate tofu cheesecake (with strawberry sauce, yum!) but I kind of hope they veganize that PB one so I can eat it again!!

Vegetarian in Holland almost always includes some form of dairy. Ugh. If it is a miracle and does not include dairy, then it always has gluten in it which is a no-no for me.

Going over to my mothers house is always an adventure.  She loves her meat.  She doesn't quite understand the whole NOT eating meat thing, but she's non-judgmental.  Anyway, she went out once and got me some "veggie" burgers.  Turns out, they were clean!  No eggs or dairy - I was impressed.  For whatever reason, they cooked their ribs and burgers and hot dogs first, then, when the grill was still glistening with the meaty juices plopped my veggie burger on top!  Maybe I'm picky, but I couldn't eat the poor burger!  Just the smell alone was sad.  And I let it go - I didn't have the heart to let her know after her trying that it just was not okay.  I fed the burger to her dog and got a clean bun and loaded it with veggies.

I wouldn't have eaten it either....
I always lay down foil if I'm using someone else's grill...
