If you have depression, you can't fly, right?
I have depression and want to get help, but I am terrified that if I do, then I will never be able to fly, which is my life long dream. I want so bad to be able to get my private pilots liscence. All my life I have wanted that. But if I get diagnosed with clinical depression I will never be able to get that, will I?
Hmmmm...I have never heard of this. I know that if you are color blind you can't get a license. Is it because they assume that you will purposely crash the plane or something? What about bus drivers, can they get their license if they're depressed? ???
Here is one of the requirements for a class 3 (minimum) medical certificate.
Mental - No diagnosis of psychosis, bipolar disorder, or any other severe personality disorder.
So if I get diagnosed with depression, then this means that I can't get the certificate , right?

I don't think clinical depression is classified as a severe personality disorder. Those are things like schizophrenia and others where people are severely disconnected from reality. But don't quote me on that.
I enjoy learning how to fly, have been at it for some time now (Single engines).
When I had to get my aviation medical, it was all physical related. I think you should be good to go, and flying is certainly going to help you! Each time I fly I can't wipe the smile from my face.
I was hoping you were here PilotKevin. I actually already have a class 3 certificate because I was taking lessons for awhile. They are EXPENSIVE! I had to put them on hold, can't afford it, now the baby...
I know what you mean about the smile. I love to fly. But landing is super hard! When I stopped I was just getting to do the in-air stalls. Those SCARE me! Flew in a rain storm one time, that was really fun.

Landing is tough, but the secret is to pull up at the right time, when your instinct says to keep nose down :) Of course, if you nail your approach, you're golden. But really, my mental state has never been an issue. And believe me, there were times when I was Effed up >:D
Believe me, I am anything but depressed when flying. I am happy as can be while flying. What I have would in no way effect my ability to fly. Well, except the pregnacy! This depression I have only effects me when I am alone and bored.
I know someone who is bipolar and a pilot in the military. I think this would be a good time to get treatment cause you can blame it on the pregnancy hormones if they say anything about the flying thing.
