AR: raccoon killed with nail gun

The following article talks about a former slaughterhouse worker turned teacher who "dispatched" (a nice neutral word for "deliberately murdered") a raccoon using a NAIL GUN. Why? So that he could demonstrate to his class of high school students the art of skinning a raccoon and examining the insides. But fear not...he did not nail the animal in front of the students...I mean what kind of person would do that?! Yeah, a real winner.

I don't even know where to start with this. It's just disgusting and sickening and infuriating and saddening on every single level. It's shocking that educators are allowed to teach something so atrocious in high school (because apparently it is imperative for kids to know how to flay a poor defenseless wild animal). Incredibly, what upset the superintendent of the school was not that the poor innocent raccoon was killed (moral issues be damned)...but the fact that the raccoon was killed "on the premises" of his precious school. And when the live raccoon was brought before the teacher, it didn't occur to him to release the animal back in the wild...no, rather, the fact that the raccoon was still alive was just an inconvenient minor glitch that could be easily remedied with his handy nail gun.

The more I read about animal rights, the more I learn that the laws (Animal Welfare Act and state laws) put in place to ostensibly "protect" animals...do no such thing. The bottom line seems to be that if humans benefit from the end result of the death or torture of an animal then it is "justified," and the result rarely ends in legal repercussions (i.e., because the cruel action is deemed useful to human purposes). In this case, the students are learning a lesson, and the raccoon simply serves as a tool or object or resource to better educate.

I could go on...but I'll stop here.

p.s. For those of you who are wondering what AR is (in the subject)...it stands for Animal Rights.

ughhh.
that's all.

What a DICK! You should forward the article to the Animal Legal Defense Fund and let them see if he actually broke any animal cruelty laws. Even if they have to find a loop hole to get him charged with something....leave it to them to find it and bust has sorry, sad, poor excuse for a human, ass! >:(

Did anyone ever read American Psycho? I really really hate Brett Easton Ellis (interestingly, my vegetarian husband likes him a lot, even though my husband is just as passionate about animal rights as me), but this story reminded me of some of the disgusting cruelty in this book. Ugh.

That's horrible.

Not really surprised that it happened in Arkansas, though.

I just read this and it's disgusting.  The principal of the school said the "kids just love him" and told him not to kill animals on school property.  Only ONE PERSON LEFT THE ROOM in order not to see this disgusting display of brutality - only one.  What does that say about society?  I hope somebody goes after his ass.

Thank you Davedrum and MDVegan for pointing me to ALDF. :)

I did send them a letter with a link to the article. I'll let you how they respond if and when I get a reply.

And YES, that teacher IS a DICK. >:(
