Frustrating!

I have a friend that took a couple classes in nutrition and now she thinks she's an expert! The first thing she did when she found out we're veg is start nagging about protein and all her nutrition knowledge! I just kind of laughed it off because I know her heart was in the right place, but where do people get off? And shouldn't a "nutritionist" know that meat is NOT the only form of protein? I mean, HELLO! Some people just don't get it...Sorry for the rant...much better...now I'll shut up, LOL! :-X
if she really knew so much about nutrition she'd realize that all the hormones and steroids in animal meats and milks (etc) would pretty much negate all (if ANY) nutritional values
oh no! i had a friend who was a nutrition major and a vegan. he couldnt handle it. the teacher forced him to include meat in all of his menus and papers. instead of calling things chicken or beef he would say "suzie should incorporate more dead chickens in her diet to receive adequate protein" haha things like that. yeah. nutrition classes often times cater to making the SAD work. if its even possible. haha. next time she says stuff, you could say 'thanks for the info, but i'll show you how healthy my diet it." i dont know about you, but being vegan, i rarely, if ever, get sick. at first my coworkers thought i was crazy for being vegan and not getting the flu shot. but by the end of the year, some of them were saying 'you must be doing something right to never get sick!" well. i am doing something right! and youre not! haha. ok i didnt say that.
So lame! Does your new found nutrition expert friend realize that a vegetarian and/or vegan diet is recommended by doctors for a number of health issues???? Kidney disease, liver disease, diabetes, cancer, lupus, RA and MS just to name a few off the top of my head.
not to mention that the AHA states on it's website that a vegan diet REVERSES heart disease. As in, "Well Mr. Jones, your left anterior descending is about 50% clogged. Now, I can cut you from sternum to pelvis, or... you can stop eating meat/dairy/eggs, and it'll have the same effect...". But how on Earth will I get my protein? yeah, i'm not bitter at all...
Not to mention that many people eat waaay too much protien anyway. I have found out from good sources that I need a whole 2 ounces of protien per day! Not per serving--per day. And that for my size, age and activity level, it's a god's plenty.
Maybe you could give her a couple of books on "nutrition" like the china study, or eat to live
A little knowledge is a dangerous thing. Alexander Pope
I think lisaanddini has a great idea. Educate her with the appropriate material. If she wants to walk around handing out unsolicited advice she should at least be familiar with all the aspects of nutrition.
Thanks for the support guys. It really frosted my patooties! I couldn't get a word in edgewise as she kept spouting off about me needing to drink protein shakes. I was thinking of sending her some info, just so she could see or maybe sending her some links.
Yeah, my brother-in-law, had to have open heart surgery. He ate steak and stuff like it was going out of style! My whole family thinks we're crazy- oh well! If people could just see the benefits...although I think many people choose not to see, they would be so much happier and healthier!
When I was in the hospital, they sent in the hospitals nutritionist to talk to me an find out what it is I need to eat to stay healthy. I thought I was going to learn somthing but when she got there i was the teacher and she just listened to me. At least she was open and quite interested in what I wanted on my menu, insted of telling me something like I must eat meat to be healthy.
I have a big feeling they don`t teach anything in those classes about nutrition or they would all be vegans if they new what it ment.
You know what, my dad is the same way! He is contantly telling me I should eat fish because fish is SO good for you... I'm mean where will I get my omegas from?! Ever heard of flax dad! So annoying. Its like, who made you an expert in nutrition!
