Grr...Do not eat while reading

Don't know if this is the right place to post but here it goes. So I was just out walking my dog and she was mostly peeing until we went  up to this one house with a buch of crap in the front yard. I thought she was going to pee some more, but she pooped. Then someone next door yelled "You need to pick up that dog poop and keep your dog at home!". I freaked out and ran. I do not want to pick up other peoples dogs poop, but I don't want like the cops coming to my house to tell me to pick up dog crap.

I'll pick up that one that my dog did but not the others! Just don't want anyone else shouting at me. And now I'm scared to leave the house.

Ps. My dog usually poops in our yard on the way back from the walk.

P.P.S, Okay, its not in the right thread.

Well, did you pick it up? Really, you should always carry some bags with you if you're out with an animal.

I had this happen to me when I was about 12. Some woman in a minivan made me pick another dog's poop, even though I told her repeatedly that it couldn't be my dog's because we had come down fro ma different street. These things happen. Nowadays I wouldn't put up with that kind of nonsense.

NOBODY picks up dog poop in the apartment complex where I live, and it's disgusting. We can't even walk on the sidewalks because there is so much poop (some of it about half as big as our dog!). We pick up our dog poop 100% of the time, but it just makes no difference. I hate it here. I've actually picked up other dog poops because I want to walk on the sidewalks.

Yeah, some people are a bit over the top with dog-poop-enforcement. I get that it's annoying when people don't pick up, but it's weird to be forced to pick up some other dog's dried up, crusty feces.

I............don't pick up dog poop.
I find it difficult to use a perfectly good piece of whatever to pick up something that will biodegrade fairly quickly into the ground.

you could pick it up and take it home to biodegrade at your place for compost?

there's a pony club a few houses up from our place, and the horses are often walking up the road and I'm always tempted to pick up the poo when I see it on the road/footpath so I can take it home for compost but I'm scared of getting run over/people calling me a crazy poo lady...

In Georgia, it's the law to pick up after your dog. Within the city of Atlanta, you can get a $1000 fine and/or up to a year in prison for not picking it up. So I definitely pick up after Lucy.

If you went to them with a wheelbarrow, I'm sure they would give you all you wanted for compost. We always had far more than we needed for compost.

In Cali it is against the law to not pick up the poop... I used to not pick it up until this lady yelled at me one day... I have been picking up chihuahua terds ever since... But if you think about it, it is kinda rude to let your dog take a dump on someones lawn and not pick it up... Why should the people that live there have to pick up your dogs poop?

I'm with AC on this one. I pick up Fox's poop only to comply with the rules of my apartment complex and to appease the neighbors, but I think it's ridiculous. It's poop. Nature's FREE fertilizer. Nothing to be afraid of. Fox usually pops a squat where people don't normally walk (certainly not the sidewalk), and I honestly think it's ridiculous to bag up perfectly good manure and add it to my city's already overfilled dumps where it cannot break down to be recycled by other living organisms. The composting idea might be feasible for homeowners, but I have no way to compost at my apartment. And why go to the extra trouble when nature will do the composting for me?

We don't expect wild animals (squirrels, birds, raccoons, etc) that live in urban areas to clean up after themselves; in fact, we hardly notice that their droppings are all over the place! I don't know what it is about dog poop that grosses people out so much. Sure, I scrunch my nose when I've acidentally stepped on a pile of fresh poop and have to wipe it off my shoe, but it's just a few moments of inconvenience until I wipe it off. I don't know, maybe I'm a bit biased because I've always had animals and grew up working on a ranch. Sigh. I follow the rules nonetheless.

Yeah, but I think there's a difference between dog poop on communal property and dog poop on somebody's open lawn.

On the other hand, I know some people who leave dog poop, but won't let their dog poop on someone's lawn to begin with. (but when you think about it, it makes sense that the doggy would want to poop there. well-cared for lawn -> fertilizer -> poop smell!)

Depending on where you live I could see not picking up the poop... I mean if your walking through fields or whatever, not in a crowded residential area... Unfortunately not all people think of it as natural fertilizer (I noticed that it does break down quickly) so I think you should bring some poop bags in case your dog poops on someones lawn because it is kinda rude IMO... I know a lot of people let their dogs shit everywhere where I live and it makes our community look trashy because the gardeners never pick it up they just mow over it LOL

Yep, I agree. Olen likes to pup on top of monkey grass, anyway. I dunno, I'll probably start picking it up, because I usually feel guilty about not following a rule.

It would be different if I was putting into a compost or something, but I'm just picking it up, and throwing it into the trash, with a bag, or whatever. Bah. Poor poops.

At my parents' house in the middle of the country with lots of grass and space, their dog poops anywhere and it's never been a problem. However, right now I'm living in an apartment complex with tons of dogs and barely any grass, and the entire place is covered in poop. I agree, it does seem wasteful to use all those plastic bags to pick up his poop, but ever pair of shoes I own is caked in dog poop (someone else's!), so I understand the need to bag it, especially in cramped quarters. I must say that this has been a bit more interesting than I initially thought, and maybe I won't be as angry about dog shit everywhere from now on.

I think that picking up after your dog in the city is absolutely necessary. This was never such a big problem back home, but Berliners do not seem to get that. There is poop all over the sidewalks here and you have to look down while you walk at all times if you want to avoid stepping in it. Right now all the snow is melting, which means the once-frozen poop is melting too, so there are basically puddles of it all over. It would be one thing if there was actually something to fertilize, but no, it's all pavement. Occasionally people will put the poop into a little bag and then leave it on the sidewalk. Now that's just stupid.

That's weird! I can't imagine poop all over sidewalks. I guess it's just a totally different situation in urban places/large cities. No grass?

I picked up a poop today, and felt so, so dumb. It was on the side of a fence in the back/side of a house, and probably would never have been noticed! Sigh.

The crowding factor is definitely an excellent point. I too was a bit more contemplative as I picked up dog poop this evening. I love how VegWeb has inspired me to reflect on the moral weight of my poop-picking-up habits.  :>

Well, it's weird. At our apartment complex, there is plenty of grass. But for some reason, there is dog poop all over the sidewalks (and yes it is melting, and yes, you're right, it's so gross). Honestly, I'm going to sound like a jerk here, but I've seen some of these people out walking, and there are tons of humongous people that are laboring just to get outside their apartments, and I seriously think they might not be able to bend down to pick up the poop. This isn't really a wealthy or healthy city.

Newshoes, it's funny how VW has changed our perspective! I'm not quite as irritated with the poop all over the grass anymore.

Dog feces carries bacteria that can cause blindness in young children. That is one of the many reasons that cleaning up after your dog is so important. The judicious use of a plastic bag is all it takes. Where I live they are offered free by the City...and yet many people are just too lazy to bother.
