Having dinner with Peter Singer tonight!

So, our university is bringing Peter Singer to give a talk on the ethics of eating (based on what he writes about in his newest book, The Way We Eat--Why Our Food Choices Matter.  His lecture is tomorrow and I'm also attending a q and a section after the lecture.  And tonight, our bioethics club is having dinner with him at a local vegan restaurant!  I'm pretty gosh darn excited.  And this is the first university function where I can eat all the food AND have dessert!

I know that there is a lot of controversy surrounding Peter Singer and his various philosophies (I agree with him on a lot, but not all, of his views), but I'm really glad that our university is bringing someone to talk about the ethical dimensions of food and how we have a moral obligation (to other humans, the planet, and non-human animals) to be aware of how our food is produced and ensure good animal welfare practices, but also to reduce our overall consumption, buy fair trade products, and buy locally.  Despite all the controversy, Singer has been a huge influence on the animal rights/welfare movement  as well as promoting the belief that we have a moral obligation to give to those who are not well-off (he's donating his entire lecture monies--$20,000!--to OxFam, an org. that he gives a lot of money to).

I'm also excited because I feel like a lot of my peers (i.e. the ones in my dept. and in the club) think I'm extreme for being vegan.  Hopefully this talk will show people that veg*n lifestyles are not only obtainable, but also possibly necessary.

Any burning (but polite) questions anyone would like me to try to as him?  I think I'm going to see what his views are on pet foods, since that seems to be a hot topic with this board as well as veg*ns in general.  I don't want this thread to turn into a debate (that's what happened last time I mentioned Singer coming to our school), but feel free to start a thread on the debate board about Singer's philosophies.  He's quite the interesting individual.

Wow, that is a great opportunity! I think that's so fabulous that he's coming to your school..and you get to do all those things! I'm jealous.  :)
I've only been briefly introduced (not literally) to Peter Singer and his philosophy..so I'm going to read up. That's great though.  ;)b

His newest book is pretty good (the one he's giving the talk on).  You can get the paper back one for pretty cheap (which has a different title, which I'm confused about, but whatever).  It's called The Ethics of Eating: Why Our Food Choices Matter.  It gives a lot of practical advice about changing to a veg*n diet.  There are a lot of resources in the back.  And it's straight to the point about factory farming.  It's very well-cited, so I think it would be a wake-up call to anyone who reads it that thought the horrors of factory farming were dramatized by animal rights groups.  It also talks about the role of big corporations in propagating such horrible farming practices and how the American desire for cheap food is harming ourselves, the environment, and billions of animals each year.

What a wonderful opportunity, kbuettne!  ;)b

HIIMKELSI, you are right about the title.

A few weeks ago, I got to briefly meet Gene Baur, farm animal rescuer for over 20 years, vegan, and co-founder of Farm Sanctuary at a book signing for his first book.  He gave a very interesting lecture and Q& A before signing everyone's books.  Nice guy, too.  Anyway, in that case virtually everyone was already on the same wavelength but still it was wonderful meeting someone like him and being amid like-minded people.  I hope you really enjoy it!  :)

The dinner was great!  He is a very nice man, very mellow.  And the food was delicious!  There was one guy who needed to shut his mouth because he wasn't asking anything worthwhile--he just wanted his opinions validated.  Everyone was getting sick of hearing him talk  :P  But Singer is a very personable guy--we chatted while going back for a second helping at the buffet.

Lilolme, did you go to that at Changing Hands or The Center Bistro for the Gene Baur thing?  I was going to go to that, but I think we were either out of town or I was busily finishing my thesis.  I'm glad it was a good lecture!

Thanks, kbuettne!  Glad you had a good experience, too.  :)

I went to Changing Hands.  I didn't even know Gene Bauer was going to lecture.  The e-mail I got said there would be a lecture and book signing somewhere else the night before that for $20 in addition to the cost of the book.  I'm not a poor student, I'm a poor worker :P so I opted for the free night but he gave a lecture anyway.   ;D
