hi I'm new
Hi there! I'm a brand new vegetarian, I'm only a few days in. I saw a TV program about factory farmed animals and it was incredibly life-changing. I have never particularly thought about vegetarianism, but after seeing this program and reading on the PETA and some related websites, I cannot ever imagine eating animal products again. It just struck a place deep in me that I don't even think I knew I had. I knew that the industry wasn't pretty but I had no idea.
I'm 35 yo, married with 2 kids ages 3.5 yo and 1.5 yo and we live in Portland, OR. I'm hoping that the transition won't be too difficult. My husband was a vegetarian for 8 years before he met me and we eat far less meat than the average american family. I think the hardest part for me will be giving up milk for my morning coffee. My kids and husband drink rice milk (ironically I'm the only cow's milk drinker in the house!) but I dont really like the taste of rice or soy milk for coffee.
I'm still trying to figure out exactly what I feel comfortable with - lots of baked goods that I love have eggs and butter in them! what about fish? I guess that's something that all vegetarians go through, lol.
Ally - he does not become a vegan but he does change his tune quite a bit. I think its worthwhile for you to watch it, even if you need to fast-forward through the factory farm scenes.
Ok, I have it opened in a tab..I'll watch tonight.
i watched it online as well. it was really good! the factory farm scenes, i didnt think that they were as brutally disgusting as some other videos and pictures. but its still, of course, heart breaking.
that guy ate vegan for a month, i wonder what it was like going back to his meat eating household and eating meat. those images that he saw, they stay, you cant just forget stuff like that. i want an update from him! ha. one thing that i admired about him is that he did go into it with an open mind, sort of, it seemed like he went in thinking, well i'm a hunter, i eat meat, i love meat, i'm not going to change, but I am going to do this because i want to see why vegans are vegan. He just wanted to see what the "other side" was like, i guess. before seeing it, i had the impression that he wanted to go into it to change vegans minds, to encourage them to eat meat again. but it was really that he wanted to learn about veganism even though he had no initial plans on going vegan himself. i think thats awesome and i think a lot of americans can relate to him, like "well, i eat meat, i love meat, i dont want to change.... but i still want to learn about veganism anyways and not just diss it without knowing about it first.' i think thats cool. even though it sucks that they still eat meat.
Yeah, it was progress. I think he said he would still hunt. But he was really upset about the unnecessary cruelty in the dairy industry, and he was starting to get the idea that it doesn't make sense for us to eat cows and not eat our pets, I think. He got to know a rescued cow really well and nurture back to health. I think it was positive overall. He really went from kind of a jerk to more open-minded.
Try Almond Breeze Almond Milk (it's in the blue container, usually not refrigerated) in your coffee. It's really creamy and yummy!

Thanks! I'll check it out!
Is it sweet like rice milk? I usually drink my coffee with a little bit of fat-free milk and no sugar. I've found that rice milk is too sweet for coffee although its good in other things, and I don't like the taste of soy milk at all.
and I don't like the taste of soy milk at all.
Have you tried multiple brands? Silk grew on me...but it's far from my favorite. We buy So Nice if it's cheaper than others (buy what's cheapest), and it's really good/the best. I don't drink coffee though.

Yep. It was good. Still a bit of a disconnect..but good progress; very heart warming (and sad).
If you have a Whole Foods near you, their brand of unsweetened soy milk is my favorite! It's very creamy and doesn't have that soy aftertaste that I just can't acquire a taste for (I used to drink cow's milk like it was going out of style, so I don't think I'll ever be able to drink a whole glass of non-dairy milk plain, but the Whole Foods 365 Organic Unsweetened may be pretty close for me). I've never liked any other soy milk that much in stuff like cereal where you can still taste the "milk" a great deal, and I'm so glad I found this kind! And I think it's one of the cheapest, also. You can get a 1/2 gallon for like $2.75 or something like that.
If you want to try that almond milk, get the unsweetened kind. I rotate between the WF unsweetened soy milk and the Almond Breeze unsweetened.

I was the same, and thought this also, but I can easily drink So Nice....I don't do it often at all (partly just b/c it's so expensive-we use it for oatmeal), but it's good!

If you don't like your coffee sweetened, try the Unsweetened Almond Milk (that's the one I always get!). It is soooo yummy and has no sugar at all. And only has 40 calories per cup.
