how do you know...?

Hey guys, quick Q. How do you know if nuts have gone bad? I didn't even KNOW that they could even go bad until recently, which made me wonder if the nuts/seeds I've had sitting in my cupboard for MONTHS are even good anymore. Does anyone know how you can tell? And how long do nuts & seeds generally keep before they are bad?
They smell like rancid oil.
I always do a taste test. If it tastes bad, it's bad. That goes for any food around the house. I find soy milk, for instance, tastes just fine even weeks after the expiration date. Or maybe my tastebuds are weak, lo.
If your nuts are in the shell, avoid those with little pinholes in them (particularly walnuts). Little perfectly-round holes mean bugs.
Also walnuts in the shell will get shrivelled and dry looking when they are old.
I don't know if you soak your nuts, but if you do- the ones that float are rancid.

Don't worry, you are not alone!
Relatedly, (related to the original topic, not to this recent debauchery), how can I tell when my flax oil has gone bad? I keep it in the fridge, but it still turns pretty quick, right? Don't tell me that I'll know because it'll taste/smell bad... as far as I'm concerned flax oil is demon spit when its fresh.
