Yes!!! The Toronto Vegetarian Association (with Dreena Burton) just ran a contest asking for the worst vegetarian cooking disasters. I entered, and I won first place! I get to choose two of the following books: Everyday Vegan, Vive Le Vegan, and Eat Drink and Be Vegan. The idea of the prize being two books is that winners can keep one for themselves and then pass off the other one to someone who is on the cusp of veganism -and just needs that extra umpf.
I definitely want Eat Drink and Be Vegan for myself, but I'm curious about the other two. I don't know which one to choose! And I need to choose quickly!
You can listen to the Toronto Vegetarian Podcast to hear my story, and the stories of the two runners up at http://www.veg.ca/
Yay!!! ;D
Check you out! You're published in the newspaper and winning writing competitions! Sizzazzle! I can't listen to your story, though, because when I click on "Listen Now" it stalls on "Connecting." :(
I couldn't figure out where it was..but yay! I don't have any of those books, so I dunno! Do you know who you're going to give to to?
:)
Holler at that! I'm listening immediately.
That's so exciting! Yay! :smooth:
i'm starting the podcast right now 8)
Yay! I've got the podcast on my ipod. Also, this adds a new podcast for me to listen to!
That's so ironic -- MY worst cooking disasters came from EDBV.
I would get VLV because the two patty recipes in there are ones we actually enjoy, even though I had to toss almost an entire batch of "Mommycakes" in the garbage since no one would eat them (after the first bite). I keep goin back to Dreena and tryin and tryin.
LOL! laura, i laughed so hard when she said 15 minutes. holy crap!
buuut, i feel like i might have heard about this on vegweb, because i think i remember you saying about smelling smoke forever?

Yessum - I did write about it, but I think it was on Stemma. It was a pretty traumatizing experience, actually.
I'll just copy and paste what I sent them here:
My transition from vegetarian to vegan about two years ago forced me to prepare meals for myself (which was good for me – I wanted to gain some mad cooking and baking skills and be more self-sufficient). As I've tried to fend for myself in the kitchen, my food mistakes have been a part of a series – it seems like whenever I try something new, I make a mess of things. Even with simple recipes, it usually takes me more than one try to make a dish edible.
I've made bread that didn't rise (but that happens for most bread-makers), rock hard scones, overpowering flavoured soups, a strange tofu casserole for Christmas dinner that fell apart the minute it came out of the oven, smushy brown rice that stuck together, mouldy-tasting hummus, and lumpy cakes.
One of the biggest disasters, however, came from trying to cook a potato – by microwaving it. I didn't have the time to bake it in the oven (and since I cook for myself, why bother baking only ONE potato in the oven? What a waste of energy… So, microwaving was the answer). Cooking a potato in a microwave doesn't seem difficult, but, of course, ends up a disaster when I make an attempt. I was doing it blind – just guessing what to do. I poked a few holes in the spud, stuck it in the microwave, and put it on for about 15 minutes. Yep, 15 minutes. I left the kitchen to check my email, and before I knew it, the smoke alarm was blaring. The potato was on fire! I'd clearly put it on for much too long – and I almost set my kitchen ablaze. The whole house smelled like smoke for days and and I haven't tried microwaving a potato since…
I'm thinking I might give the other cookbook to my sister for our birthday. She was vegan for a while, is vegetarian now, and is the only person I can think of who would use and appreciate a Dreena Burton book. I still need to decide which book though... it'll probably be Vive Le Vegan.
oh my goodness, that was hilarious! i'm glad i listened to the podcast before reading the story because the way they said it made it come alive. heh. i can only imagine. the other stories were funny, but didn't even come close! the potato caught on fire... thats a pretty good one : ) congrats!
Yay, I listened to it today! Hehe, so funny. And it's a nice podcast too!
I would freak if a potato caught on fire. How did you put it out?

It's called a resourceful roommate. She lets me know the tater's a smokin' with loud shouts of surprise, I start freaking out, then she somehow manages to put that potato to rest.
Sometimes it's hard living with other people, but in that moment, I was glad to not be alone in that house...
