You are here

I'd like to know a little about you...

Yeah, so i came in here all gung-ho and like, hey - let's start a new thing - but i never introduced myself and don't know much about all of you.
I'm steph, i got married this july and have 2 kitty friends. i stopped eating meat 11 years ago and never think about eating it again, even though my mom still isn't used to it. oh well, maybe 2 decades will do it. i sing as a nighttime'job', put designs on shirts during the day and make jewelry in my spare time (hoping to make it a career)
i'm sort of new to veganism and finding it hard to transition since i live in such a rural depressed area  :-\ and would appreciate some tips. thanks for the time and tell me about yourself.

been here for probbably a couple to a few weeks now. i origianally came here for the recipes (love to cook) but now after reading about the way farms and other pple treat animals im slowly becoming vegetarian. hopefully later on vegan. im a single mom to a 2 yr old boy (broke up with his dad for different reasons last month). lol, we went to bob evans earlier and he ate most of his fruit but not the grilled cheese sandwhich, he wanted my salad and kept stealing it. when im not chasing him around the house i like to read (scifi and fanfiction stories of books or tv series/movies i like), listen to music. i want to become a professional (sp?) chef. if i do that then i might try and make food for one of the local fire departments/police departments. when i move out of here then i will adopt another cat or dog from the humane society or sisca (small place kinda like the humane society). sry so long.

I thought I would post this thread here, as many of us introduced ourselves not so long ago! :)
Quite a few pages to read!

oh heck

i've started coming to vegweb more often since i moved to MIDDLE GEORGIA (ahhhhh!) for some good old fashioned vegan support. i'm thissss close to graduating high school and never looking back. i'm a little dysfunctional and probably use too many pop culture references, but whatever. i want to get back to europe as soon as i can - hopefully this time for good.

i have to be forced to eat anything other than cereal soaked in delicccious soymilk and green and black's chocolate. i don't have a very advanced palate. which is why i joined vegweb in the first place.

oh yea, my mother insisted that i get blood work a couple weeks ago because she thought my health may be 'suffering' and the results came back PERFECT! how's that for good genes?? or sheer luck? i don't know, i just don't know.

Hi.  It's always nice to get a roll call every now and then.  Mine hasn't changed much from the above link, but with one important change. I'm newly single.  My long term relationship ended after nearly 10 years.  Sad but true.

Hi I'm Nikki,
First off, I'm horrible at introducing myself. I get nervous and don't know what to say. But here goes.  I'm a new veg*n as of a week ago. So far things are going great thanks to this website. I live on the Eastern Shore of MD. Been married to my hubby for 16 years and we have two daughters. I stay at home while DH is in the Navy. He is an avid hunter AND very supportive of my decision. I don't plan on changing him because he's not trying to change me. Before my transition everything I made either came from a box, driver Thru or the freezer section. Now I love cooking and love eating what I make knowing exactly what's in it. This is actually my third attempt at vegetarianism. I'm doing so much better this time because I have recipes to make and not depend on the veggie burgers and such.  And I LOVE pigs. I think they're adorable. Then I researched them a bit and found out how smart they are and what they're really like. One of the things I really want to do before I leave this life is visit a farm and pet a pig. Corny? I know.

What else?...I guess just that right now I'm trying to absorb as much info as my brain can handle. And this is a great place to do that.

Hi all,

I'm Sarah. I am a University of Lethbridge, AB, Canada student. I have been lacto vegetarian for about 6 years now. I have vegan tendencies but being a student in a small city makes it very difficult!

Nice to meet you all! :)

I am so very sad about you and David.  I hope you are keeping well and enjoying life with your two pups!

Well,
My turn I guess.....I've put this off for some reason. I guess because I'm not sure what, or how much to say. Let me say first that I'm glad I found this place while looking for a recipe one day. It's nice to be surrounded by like minded people, even if we all don't agree on all levels about every topic.

I'm from NY originally. I grew up on Long Island. I went to Berklee College of Music in Boston, and left after a few years because everyone I was performing and playing with at school decided if we were going to play.....it was time to just go do that...play. So, it was NY or LA. I choose NY, and it was the right decision for me. I stayed in college to make my parents happy at the time but my heart was not in it. My heart was only in playing and that I did around NYC 7 nights a week playing every type of music imaginable. It did not matter to me, as long as  I was out playing live. 9 credits short of my bachelor's degree, I was offered an audition for a world tour, which I was chosen for. Since then I have had no other career but music. Besides touring with many artists and bands over the years since, I also have had time to teach and do drum clinics around the world. I love teaching and hope to do more when I have the time. I have purposely not included for whom I play, or have played, because this board is about me being vegan and the reasons why I am and to learn more about our lifestyle  (though I have slipped in one or two posts). If you want to know more about my career...please feel free to email me. No, I'm not famous by any means, I just sometimes work for famous people...let's just say: I'm the guy behind the guy (or gal)! I am very open and honest about my career, i just don't find this board the place to discuss it.

I currently live in North Georgia near the Appalachian Trail, because of my love for the outdoors and for hiking. Most all of you know that I rescue animals ( mostly dogs), and that  I have 12 dogs and 1 cat. I've been looking to move to the Asheville area, but I have not found the perfect place for me yet. At this point though, I feel like throwing a dart at a world map...and where ever it lands...maybe that is where I'll go (unless it's Texas!...LOL...only kidding...but maybe not). Where I live is very important to me, because for the months I am home I really like my privacy and love to be out in the woods and in nature. Not seeing another home from where I live is important for me. It's just more peaceful, and it's better for my neighbors (having that many dogs and all.....  ::) I have lived in many different places, and have traveled all over the world to places I have only seen for the most part, from a tour bus or hotel room window.

I've been a vegetarian for about 7 years and a vegan for 2 - 2 1/2 years. (Bad with dates...they all blur to me). I became one because of my love for animals, and my awareness to the horrors of factory farming. I have a very small group of very close friends that are for the most part, spread out across the country at this time. My best friend and old college roommate actually moved here a few years ago, so that I'm thankful for. My personal life is in a transition mode the past year as well...from my marriage now coming to an end, to the loss of my Father in October, to the birth of a niece last month..and to the very recent reemergence of terminal cancer in my Mother. I am at her home today as I write this. I'll be returning home later today...then I'm off to Europe for a month long tour. I leave in about 10 days for rehearsal first, with the tour then starting the 18th of February.

Music is my life and has been since I was a very young boy, being vegan is now a very big part of my life as well. Anything else you want to know.....ask !

(sorry it's so long winded and boring....just being here at my mom's and not being able to sleep last night/ this morning got me going)......

I live in southern Ontario and I'm a grade 1 teacher. I have two grown sons. One still lives with me (hopefully not forever!) and the other is married to a lovely girl who is the daughter I never had. They have given me a beautiful little granddaughter who just turned 1. I am lucky to have them living just a couple of blocks from me. I have a wonderful dog I rescued from a pound named Olive. She is a border collie and is the best dog ever. I can't figure out how she managed to be picked up by the pound and not have someone looking for her. I have a cat too named Felix. He is almost 13 now and is beginning to show his age. I have been vegetarian for almost 6 years now. I came to this decision quite late in life and my family all thought it was a phase. I think now they understand that it's not something I'm just doing in passing, although they still think I'm nuts!

Wow....all of you are so interesting and if I responded to each of you I'd never leave the computer!

OK....about me:

My name is Lauren.  I am a 25yr old married Coastie (to another Coastie).  No kids yet, but probably within the next 2 yrs.  And every time I see an animal in need, I want to give it a home, but can't due to my current situation.  Maybe my next assignment will allow me to rescue a furry friend or two!  I currently live in Miami, but I get to transfer this upcoming summer.  8)  I love my small family and talk to them quite a bit on the phone.  I've also lived in CA, GA, TX, VA and CO.

I became vegetarian Dec. 15th and have been making strides to getting all the way to vegan.  This is my third attempt and I feel fully confident that I will not backslide this time.  It is amazing what awareness, the web and great communities and resources can do to aid veg*ns!  This place has truly been a haven for me to find new things to eat...as well as learning about new things from other people.

I attend school online and am just a few months away from attaining my General AA.  I keep changing my mind as to what I would like to do when I get out of the Coast Guard.  I guess it is going to depend partially on where my husband and I get stationed next and the schools and degree programs that are available.  Ultimately, what fits my personality and goals would be either something in a research field or some kind of hospital administration.

I read, run, indoor rock climb, cook, bake, shop, jetski, sleep, drive fast and hard and many other things.  I would like to get into yoga.

Hi everyone,
Another southern Ontario person here! I am currently in my third year of a psychology degree and will be graduating this year because I just got into law school! yay! I am planning to study health law, which in some ways has become a big interest of mine after years of reading labels on food. Once I was searching for an ingredient, I would read the nutritional value and that is the reason I prefer to cook most of my own food, hence I am a slight vegweb addict! As other posters have said, what I do all day involves a lot of time in front of the computer. Last semester I took 5 online courses and that is when I finally started writing on these boards. Vegweb is truly my study break. I have been a semi-vegetarian most of life (I wasn't one and didn't call myself one, but enough to develop the label from others), and strictly lacto-ovo for 5 years. I have done some vegan stunts, and now I am just a limited eggs and dairy person but they are not out of my diet completely. I am passionate about social justice issues and the environment. I love dancing, especially acrobatics (consisting of balancing and "flips" to most people), and I just began tae kwon do a few weeks ago. I am planning on going for a belt at the end of the semester! ha-ya! ;)

Greetings All.  I'm Holly from Tampa, Florida.  I'm a divorced 43 year old geologist with a 14 year old daughter.  Until very recently I was still, on occasion, partaking of fish and shellfish.  I've been "fish-free" for a month now, but I'm still not comfortable enough to call myself an ovo-lacto vegetarian yet.  I scuba dive, garden, pour candles and soaps and I love vegweb.  It's done a lot to change my eating and shopping habits.  I also "collect" and feed stray cats that irresponsible owners discard.  I'm currently responsible for 8 fur babies, none of which started out as mine.

Dave, sorry you're facing some challenging things in your life right now.  I'll add your mother to my prayers.  Congrats on becoming an uncle!  I became an aunt last December to an amazing little nephew.  He just turned 1 year old!  He's hilarious!  Loves music and dances like you wouldn't believe.  I absolutely adore him  :)

I guess I didn't weigh in here....

I have been vegetarian and/or vegan off and on for 30 yrs.  I am soon to be 46 (later in the month).  I live in a rural Colorado ranching community and I am tolerated as the local weirdo.  I went back to being strictly vegan because I suffer from lupus.  I am divorced and have 6 kids, 2 out on their own, one headed to college in the fall, no grandkids.  I am a medical transcriptionist, but my BFA is in Fine Arts and Design.  I am currently in graduate school to be a marriage and family therapist.  I paint, sew, crochet, knit, embroider and ohh right, occasionally cook!  We keep exotic birds and we are down on numbers these days by intent.  Having birds precludes having cats and dogs, but there are plenty of strays we feed and take care of.

I have been around here for about 4 years or 5 I think.  My computer will drop my password so I have to get another one and I disappear for a while.  That, and I used to have lupus flares that put me off of everything in life from time to time.  Being vegan has helped a lot and I have my first real flare since Thankgiving this week.  I don't care too much because it is really not that bad and I am thinking I'll be better in the next day or so.  Even when they come they are short.  Who says that being vegan isn't good for the body?  It has made me SO much better!  Of course, it helps to have such wonderful support from the crowd here.

Hey Cherbear,
Thanks so much for your kind words and for adding my Mom to yor prayers. It's because of you, and all those like you here at vegweb (there's a bunch of you), that I hang out, share my thoughts, give advice, get advice, and make really bad tasteless jokes with. Thanks again, nice of you to notice, and even nicer that you cared.

Thanks Elizabeth, I appreciate that.  It's ended very amicably.  I guess in the end all things are for the right reason, I don't know, but the reason we're splitting up is not a good reason at all (alcoholism - the great destroyer of families and realtiionships) and so unnecessary.  But it's my reality I just have to deal.

Dave, I appreciate your heart-felt bio.  I'm sorry to hear about your challenges with your marriage, your family, etc.  I love dogs and I could so see myself with 12 dogs.  But it's hard in the city.

About Asheville, I just took a vacation there this past summer and was very impressed with all the vegetarian options.  Every restaurant had a vegetarian option and there were severall all vegetarian options.  It's a great place to be a vegan I would think.

Good luck to you.
