ignorant summer school kids.

So...As some of you know, I was taking a 3-week summer school class for PE. Today was the last day of the whole shabang, so the teacher asked everyone to bring in a healthy (fruit, veg, or whole grain incorporated) food item to share with the class, with the nurtition information to go with it. I got really excited (POTLUCK!) and made vegan WW oatmeal raisin cookies for them. The whole class know that I am vegan, so when I brought them in, they were all like, "I thought you were vegan? Why did you make cookies?" so thaaaaat annoyed me. Um, there's no such thing as vegan cookies? OH YEAH? ugh.

None of them (except like two of the 27 people) touched them. And, I might say so myself, they were awesome. But it really pissed me off that just because they were vegan no one wanted to touch them.

Another person brought in (store-bought, but not a big brand like chips ahoy or anything) oatmeal, chocolate, and chocolate chip cookies, which everyone jumped at and swiped up before you could say anything. When someone looked at the package, and they saw that it said "Organic cookies", they all got grossed out. One of them was all, "organic cookies?? WTF??? that doesn't make any sense!"

after that, I guess someone from another class came into the room, and was about to take a cookie, when one of the people from my class said, "I wouldn't try THAT if I were you, it's organic, so it probably tastes, you know, gross." totally seriously.

UUUUUUUGH! whyyyy? these kids are soo ignorant and apparently very poorly educated. i'm not saying that all people who may be considered "lower class" are like this at all, because I know very well that there are some that are not. But the school that this summer school took place at definitely consists primarily of (sorry) poorly educated hispanic kids, who know of nothing healthy and whose idea of vegetables are ketchup and french fries.

Sadly, this is common across the spectrum of "classes", "ethnicities", and ages... I have college educated, white middle class, 30 somethings shy away from my food at times when I go to pot-lucks, just the same way I had five year-olds balk at the term "vegetarian" when I was growing up. The only thing I have to say is, get used to it, and look on the plus side: MORE COOKIES for you!!! >:D  >:D

Be careful with lumping together the "poorly educated hispanic kids" and making generalizations about them.  It's not as if being Latino has anything to do with whether or not you know what organic means.  I mean, I can see why you're mad, but I bet that many of the students who gave you a hard time have never encountered veganism or organic food before, that's all.  Did you explain to them how it's possible to make vegan cookies?  It might have been a nice learning experience.  You can't really get mad at someone for never having learned something.   :)

I could see why that was a hard day, though!  I bet they missed out on some good cookies!

Your last day!  This will be the most fit you will be in your entire life.  Unless you become a professional athlete and spend all day exercising.  How do you feel?

I totally did not mean to say that the reason why they hadn't understood was because they were mostly hispanics....I definitely know what you mean about making generalizations, and I am usually very careful about it because I'm not one to make assumptions like that. I just meant it as, well, a fact; that the class is 99% hispanic. That's all. They had definitely encountered veganism and organic things before (as they'd already had the knowledge of what either of them were), but made the assumption themselves that all things classified as either suck and taste bad.  THAT'S what pissed me off. I essplained how to make vegan cookies, but none of them seemed interested, so I just kind of shut up. I figured I'd never seem them again, and I'd already tried, was tired from the day, and didn't really feel like going out of my way to make much more of an impact.

heck no! I have been in waaaaay better shape, esp. last summer when I used to be on my school's track team. I was like ms. speedy gonzales, I ran a 6:30 minute mile. Now....my mile is in the 10:00's, hehe. I went through a really bad depression last year and lost a lot of muscle and this (4 days a week for 3 weeks) wasn't enough to compensate for all of that. We started out rough, too, so I didn't get to work my way up in muscle to the amount we were doing. It was just a bunch of soreness and tiredness  :-\. meh. i guess I'll work on it slowly for the remaining 3 weeks of summer. On the bright side, I'm done with PE FOREVER! I will never have to get sweaty at school again! yesss.

The story reminds me of the days in the 70's when they launched the first all-natural organic ketchup on the market. No artificial anything, less sweetening. Nobody liked it. They wanted their artificial flavourings back!

People's tastebuds are conditioned by what they're used to eating so if you're used to eating artificial flavourings in every bite, natural foods would taste way different. I've been cooking all-natural for 26 years so whenever I would visit the States everything was pretty tasteless...no decent garlic, no spices. I would spend the whole time cooking au naturel and everyone raved about my food, saying, "Oh but it's too much work." I would prove them wrong every time, but they still said it. It's about not changing their habits. It's "too much work" to think new thoughts and learn new ways.

I see what you mean!  I just finished teaching a summer school class of what many people deem "ignorant hispanic summer school kids," so it strikes a nerve.

No PE EVER AGAIN?!  That's neat!  Totally worth it.

Yeah, I understand what you mean, KMK. I got your back on that.

I'm so glad it's over, cos all of my friends were done with pe going into sophmore year...that would suck having to take it during senoir! I hadto make it up this summer from when I was supposed to take it though because I was in homeschool at the time and they have no PE.
