internship suggestions, please.
I'm considering taking some time to do a few internship programs. I can't afford college right now and because I have to move from my home anyways, i figure- why not? I think I put way too much emphasis on traditional education and would like to just dig and get my hands dirty...as it were. I don't have a degree, so it would need to be something that didn't require such things. I'm thinking programs that could be about a month in duration (my dad said he will watch my animals but i cant bear to be a away from them too long) and preferably something that did offer housing. I'm thinking specifically along the lines of animals care. Educating Humans about animal care. Or something along the lines of medical care for humans. In the US...So far i am considering PETA, the Farm Sanctuary and possibly, the United Poultry concerns....but does anyone have any other creative ideas? i found this site: http://www.wildlife-rescue.org/index.html on this site: http://www.rit.edu/~gtfsbi/Symp/ecology.htm but thats a pretty lengthy commitment time! but I'd love suggestions! Thanks.
Hi Vegheadzealia,
An internship during your college years will look great on your resume. I'm not aware of any month-long internship programs that also offer housing.
But if you are considering animal care, you should also look into the internship opportunities through your City and County's animal care services departments, as well as natural history or science museums in your area were you are trained to educate youth about animals. I also wonder what opportunities are out there in the medical field for animal therapy for people. Just some thoughts ...
The Farm Sanctuary or farm animal rescue sounds ideal for you because of your chickies. Since you mentioned a wildlife rehabilitation place, here's another one: Wildlife Rescue & Rehabilitation. They offer room and $50 a weed for food.
Is The Farm a pay-only place? I don't recall seeing internships for them.
I don't know how you are w/ handling dead animals....but if you're fine with chopping up roadkill, then I HIGHLY recommend interning at the Wolf Education Research Center!!! They give you lodging, pay for most of the living expenses, and give you a stipend!! If you do it in the Summer, then they have more "non-meat" positions (i.e. tour guides, etc) But then you don't have as much interaction with the wolves....

I interned at Farm Sanctuary's CA shelter during the summer of 2004. I initially signed up for one month, but at the end of the month, I was having so much fun, I volunteered for another month! And on that last day, they offered me a job! I loooooovvvvveeeee that place and am so happy I did it! I no longer work there but it was such an awesome experience and I recommend it 110%
