Ive been playing veterinarian!
I know you will all think "oh, you have bad luck!" BUT I don't feel like this is so bad...it is kinda bad but its making something good happen...Well, the other week my chickens were lookingquite peekish and I was about to take them to the vets- but I decided to see if I couldn't figure out what was happening myself...So I bought a wonderful book called the "chicken health handbook" and carefully reconstructed their diet (after reading it was moulting season and that what they were going through was perfectly normal but that they needed nutritional support) and they are looking lovely now...i wish i could post pictures. They are so cute! They even startred laying eggs again!
Then a few nights ago, one of my foster dogs ripped her ear! :o While this is sad for her, she actually seems to hardly notice. So I have been disinfecting it and putting triple antibiotic cream on it every night. I do it at night because otherwise the other dogs try to lick it...But last night when i disinfected it, the hydrogen peroxide didn't foam much, meaning the infection is going away! And for those of you who might worry--- I will certainly bring the animals to the vet the second I think its out of my field of knowledge. I might be slow to go tot eh human doctor but my animal babies see the vet ALL the time...and I have treated animal cuts and infections before...on goats and cats though.... ???
I feel like a bonafide animal rescuer!!!! Especially with all the persecution I'm experiencing in my neighborhood...hahah...that sounds funny. I love studying medicine...as a child everyone always told me to become a vet but I thought it would make me too sad to see animals suffer...Id rather treat humans....hahha is that messed up?
Are there veterinary schools that don't require disgusting animal testing by the students'?
Zealia, your dog is going to have one funny red ear because of the peroxide. ;D
You are such a good pet parent :)
Poor old Zelia...poor puppy, too.
I hope you got my email of the "chiken sangwich." I thought of you when I saw it.
Zealia, I'm glad that helping your animals is something that you enjoy, and that it is bringing you happiness. I just ask that you nurture yourself and take care of yourself just as well.

I don't know if you actually wanted an answer to this question, but I'll answer you anyway ;)
I'm actually planning to apply to vet school in a couple years and have researched this. Many of the 'good' vet schools have alternative assignments for many of the requirements, and when they don't, they use as few animals as possible (i.e. every student doesn't get their own creature to dissect). Also, I feel more comfortable researching on animals for the sake of other animals rather than for humans. I used to think "I'd rather see sick people than sick animals", too, until I realized that I generally love animals more than I love humans and that more good vets are needed (after seeing way too many underqualified/overall crappy ones). You should seriously consider it...

The only kind of Chikn Sangwich a vegan would find appealing! ;D
VHZ, that is great! It's a good feeling to know that you've done right by your companions. Every animal caretaker should know basic first aid, in case of emergency. Have a supply of styptic gel and other basics on hand. Veterinary assistance may not be immediately available and those first minutes can be critical. We've had to get handy at intramuscular injections, which are necessary if one of the animals has an allergic reaction to a scorpion sting.
