A little something about V8 juice
On here, as well as a few other places, I've seen the question come up about if V8 is vegan or not. I don't know if it's been answered yet or not (I couldn't find an answer anywhere, but I might have just missed it), so I did some digging. The ingredients label is pretty straight-forward about what's in it, but then you get towards the end and you see something that's just called "flavoring". I emailed Campbell's to ask them what is used to make this flavoring. Here is their reply:

The term "flavoring" refers to the oils or extracts that are obtained from spices and herbs. Natural flavoring may also include onion or garlic derivatives, as well as flavor derived from fruits, vegetables and their juices, or edible parts of plants. Other sources may include meat, seafood, poultry or dairy products, whose significant function in the food is flavoring rather than nutrition.
We appreciate your feedback.

Not the most direct answer in the world. But to be safe, I'm passing on the V8 from now on. Which is a shame.
THey will not be able to give you a definitive answer. I went through this with Cream of Wheat and they told me it was classified information or some crap. They will not disclose exactly what natural flavoring is, so you just have to take your chances..... >:( They probably don't even know because I think the natural flavoring is just mass produced elsewhere and they buy it up and add it to all of their food.

I wonder how much it costs to do the testing. Wouldn’t it be nice to just start testing the products that we are unsure of? I’m sick of mystery labels & vague company responses.
luckily, i don't give a shit about v8 because i think it's nasty. however, michael will not be happy about this. i may not tell him. i've already ruined olive garden for him. and loads of other things that made him sad. i think he gets annoyed that i'm a more thorough label reader and researcher than him. he likes to assume things in restaurants are fine if they look to be fine. if only that were true!

To answer your question, the "natural flavors" in our fat rich american dick are actually oils and other chemicals that are used to make it taste good.........Our research has shown that 85% of consumers can't tell the difference or don't care about the difference between meat based dick additives and flavorings and natural ones.

I was searching around a bit to see what I could find, which was very little! While searching the question came to me, why not make your own V8 juice. I have three juicers sitting in the cupboard, which in the past I used fairly regular. Buy because of the convenience of things like V8, and my own laziness, they have been put away for qute some time. I have a friend who worked at Campbells for quite a number of years and the stories she tells would make you question anything that comes from their assembley line!! So this discussion has put a new desire in my heart to get the juicers out again and back to work. Thanks all.

If it is parve, you know it only has plan based things in it (unless egg things can be used for flavoring, but i have never heard of that...) anyone who have a can wanna check? Although I have not had V8 recently, I AHVE had it since going vegan. >:(

Parve could also have fish products in it-- I worry about that often in tomato based products, since anchovies are in most worcestershire sauces, and that's often a "flavoring" component.
I am pretty upset by this-- V-8 was a staple of mine for many years, and I really hate the thought of unwittingly consuming animal products. I feel positively duped.
My friend worked on the assembley line cleaning up the vegatables and meats for the different products Campbells makes. She describes the vegetables as being very badly decomposed as they started with lower quality produce to begin with and didn't always get to them before they had started to rot. But what I remember the most is her stories concerning the chicken they used for their famous chicken soup. She said the smell was so bad that it was even hard to work with it. They would cut as much of the bad parts away before throwing it in the pot to cook. She is a vegan now. Unfortunatly this problem is not confined to Campbells as I have had experience with other places which do somewhat the same. I worked for an organic farm where they made much apple cider and juice. They only used the apples from the ground for this purpose and paid everyone 1 dollar a box to gather these apples. They were told to try to be careful with what was picked up but no one was and slugs, worms, dirt, cigarrette butts, and anything else on the apples was thrown in with the apples and then passed along to the grinder to be pressed into cider. Although this was one of the most respected growers and producers in Canada I was so disgusted I gave up drinking apple cider since seeing that happening, unless I make it myself. A friend of mine had an organic orchard and sold some of his apples to a juice maker too. As he had not received payment for them he went to the processing plant to find out what had happened and found his apples still sitting in the hot sun after two weeks! They were in pretty bad shape he said but were still used to make juice with. So I am not picking on Campbells. I think these type of practises are common amongst most producers of these type of products. Buyer beware.

Just because it's there for flavoring and not nutrition doesn't mean it's vegetarian. I could sprinkle my baked potato with bacon bits and it obviously isn't there for nutrition, just flavoring. Also, regular tomato soup is missing from the list. Why?!

Yeah, I also noticed that the non-organic Prego sauces are also missing... meaning the entire "chunky" line (garden vegetable, etc) and regular line (mushroom) is somehow not vegetarian. If you're gonna put meat in it, why not just make it meat sauce! >:( Ok, I guess it's better for people to be eating a teeny amount of meat in the sauce than straight up ground beef, but you figured you'd have the meat sauce be the one with the meat flavorings, and have the seemingly vegetarian sauces be vegetarian...

Regular tomato soups usually have meat extract in them.
