A moment of veg-related silliness...

My husband has just discovered that silly little song from the early part of the 20th century, "Animal Crackers." He asked me if vegetarians would eat animal crackers! Somehow, I think not--even if the recipe were vegan??
;D ::)
(OK so maybe it was HTBT--Had to Be There!)
Your husband's funny! I do miss animal crackers... they should make vegan "bean crackers." Whatcha think?!
Actually I think the original animal crackers were made out of a graham cracker type dough (Marie biscuits to the Europeans among us). I just liked the "circus wagon" box I guess, with the little string handle and the bright colours! (let the record show I haven't eaten them since I was...well, OK! All right!! 17!--Mom put some in a college care package once :-[)
Bean crackers--yeah! With tofu in the dough, natch!
Hey, quick, somebody show this thread to Ashley Kimball, she'll be right up there inventing the definitive "bean cracker"--but not with a face on it, surely!! And instead of a "circus wagon", I guess the box would be a little pod--recyclable, of course! ;D ;D :D
oh noes, i had some gummy bear type candies earlier at a meeting! i THOUGHT they were teh only vegan thing there...
I get that question all the time!
(it's the way I explain vegetarianism - leads people right into it)
It goes like this:
"I'm vegetarian."
"But you do eat chicken (or fish, or whatever), don't you?"
"Nothing with a face or parents"
"How about animal crackers?"
"I make an exception for them - they're so tasty!"
Is this the same "Animal Crackers" song that Shirley Temple sang? Animal crackers in my soup...? (Who would do that anyway?)
There is a song by Melanie (not the earlier part of the century- probably the 70s) called Animal Crackers. It is ridiculously cute. ;)
"Once I went on a diet...a carbohydrate diet a'int nice cause you can't eat animal crackers...sooo...I'm gonna stay a fatty for all of my life! ...but some people think that fatties are nice, yeah..." ;D

Yup, we got hold of an episode of the Muppet Show in which Elke Sommer sang "Animal Crackers" dressed up a la Shirley Temple!
I can't imagine putting the animal crackers I ate as a kid in soup, either. Maybe they were different in the 20s and 30's, more like saltines. Or maybe they just used it because it rhymed with "loop" and "hoop."

That must have been a sight to see!
I like the movie Animal Crackers with the Marx Brothers (naturally I had to bring up something off topic):
"One morning I shot an elephant in my pajamas. How he got in my pajamas, I don't know."
-Groucho Marx (as Captain Spaulding)
When my son Noah first started questioning our veg*nism, one of the first things he asked was "are we vegetarian?" yes "then why do we eat animal crackers?" He was 3 at the time, and actually, I think he was just being a smarty pants. He has that kind of dry sense of humor.....he's 6 now and is the same way! He may have been partly serious, but I doubt it. I guess it could be an innocent question! Not as bad as those who ask how we know how carrots don't have feelings too. :P
Is that the same Melanie who sang "Candles in the Rain" and "Lay down"? (Lay down, lay down, lay all around, let your white foot follow the one that is brown...)
Same one. ;) My favorite songs are Brand New Key, Ruby Tuesday, and Leftover Wine. ;) She rules!
ooo I read the I dont eat animals lyrics...love it!!!<3
