my first yoga class!! --NVR

oh wowwww. I just had my first yoga class at an ashtanga studio near where i live and boy. do i feel good. it was far more intense than i anticipated and I can't wait to go back ;D

i just wanted to share my excitement with you all. yay!

That is great!

I am going to be checking out a yoga class nearby in a sports center.  My only concern is that I may not get the spiritual experience that I would if I was trained by an actual practitioner and knowledgeable person in the Vedic Medicines and Arts, since it might not be a class taught by someone who cares for that kind of stuff.

I hope to take yoga not only for fitness, but for spiritual and mental wellness.  If you have a good teacher, it is good for that.  Sadly, such teachers are scarce in the Midwest. :-(

Sincerely,
TheRadiantSeraphim

I can see that being a legitimate concern, but I'd say try it out at the sports center and hopefully you can find a studio somewhere at some point and you'll have the foundation you need to be able to engage in it for all kinds of wellness:)

it is expensive, i agree. today i went as a guest with my friend who's been doing yoga for over two years. and I'm thinking I'll definately go back. i would say its worth the money, i felt so good and i have an activity level of about zero from november thru march.
maybe you could invest in a DVD though? do you know anyone who does yoga because maybe they could do it with you and offer you advice/support.

See, my mom suggested this as well, and my only concern is that the DVD's are not going to always be trustworthy.  Some of the people out there are in for the money.  However, I am going to attempt to ask some of my Shakta peers online and see if they recommend anything in particular, if I was to settle for DVD's.

I also worry about not having a nearby instructor to evaluate how I am doing things, so I do not hurt myself and do more damage to myself than mend.

Sincerely,
TheRadiantSeraphim

i got a DVD from the library once to check it out, but I had a hard time because I couldn't be watching it while I was doing the moves  :-\. Anyone have any suggestions?

I would say maybe drop in on a class once and then get a DVD that focuses on that style of yoga. that way you can have a chance to practice with some guidance and then you can do it on your own. and maybe even watching the DVD through once BEFORE you start would be helpful, so that you can see everything without being in weird positions.
Also, online there are lots of reference tools where they explain the basic poses (ie warrior, downward facing dog etc). I know about.com has a good yoga section. reading that that might help too.

they do have yoga on campus, but i heard it is pretty bad. there are a lot of really good studios in town, though, and those are the ones that cost $$$.

i should try watching it through once first! uhmm.... i am dumb.

haha not dumb at all.

I'm not sure about your local studios, but all the ones i've looked into let you drop in on a class and yeah, it might be kind of expensive (i've seen prices from $10-14) but to make sure you're doing it correctly it might be worth it once or twice before you get into a dvd?

ps, i feel sore in muscles i didn't even know i HAD. its a good sore though, and i can't WAIT to go back and take another class!!
