NVR.......I DID gain weight...:-(
I'm a 17 year old female, 5'5", weigh about 138-140...I don't know how it happened, but in such a short amount of time I went from being 130ish to 140! I'm so upset about it and can't seem to loose any weight. I know i sound really selfish and everything, but I've been teased before in my life (even though I wasn't terribly overweight or anything) and my weight really affects how I think about myself.
I'm active and like to go to the gym about 4-5 times a week, but sometimes it's really hard with school, work, boyfriend, friends, and the fact that my gym is 20 minutes away. I eat a vegan diet, with plenty of fruits and veggies. I have a well rounded diet. I just really need some help and ideas to help me loose about 10-15 pounds........arrrgggg
Has anyone else been through this situation before? What did you do to combat your weight gain? Any advice would be helpful! Thank you.
are you feeling unhealthy? at 17 you are still growing. i know you don't believe it but you are.
I just feel like my pants and clothes are tighter.... I don't necessarily feel unhealthy, just a bit overweight.
Oh, and by the way, I've been watching what I eat and using FitDay.com to count calories/protein/etc.
water water water..lots of it.. try not eating sweets for a week.. cut back on sodas.. switch to green tea. .etc etc etc
The only thing I drink is water, no soda at all (actually haven't drank soda for the past 5 years), I haven't eaten any sweets for a few weeks, I've been drinking tea (no sugar added)........
I'm so frustrated!!!!
(thanks for all the replies so far everyone!)
i think (ironically, because i am a nutrition major) that a lot of people worry too much about there weight. i would say you should eat when you are hungry and continue working out. if you stay at that weight it is probably what is comfortable for you, if you lose, that is probably what is comfortable for you. i think everyone has a different weight at which there body is suited. i mean, have you ever noticed there are those gorgeous skinny girls and those others that look awful and you just want to force feed them?

so so true - a body WANTS to be at a certain weight. hard to accept isn't it? especially when you're body isn't satisfied with 110 lbs, size 2, etc... That's something, I think, we all struggle with!
hmmm is there something wrong with yrou metabolism?
Do you eat maybe healthy ( yet fattening)things in larger quantities...like peanuts... avocadoes.. granola.. breads? hat could be a prob

it definitely is! my junior year of hs (... a long time ago!) i remember 'cutting weight' (because i was a wrestler) down to 125 lbs and i was practically emaciated! my hips and ribs were jutting out and everything! now, here i sit in nutrition classes and they are saying if you are 5'1" you should weigh about 105 lbs? yeah, right! i have way too many curves for that, thank you.
i wouldnt worry about it wee.... as others said, youre still growing. it could also be some water weight and even stress.
just be diligent about portion control...sometimes its good to "check in" w/ your portion sizes again... often we get used to what a serving size is, and then we realize we are eating twice the amount!
and eat when your hungry, or rather before youre famished.
maybe an extra little walk each day would help too. esp. now during the fall time, it would be extra nice and extra relaxing!
You'd be surprised how much weight you can gain when you're finishing "growing-up" without getting taller :o . I've been the same height since 11th grade, but I've gained weight because of added bone mass (those wider hips might just not be fat!)... ok, and a little is jelly too ::)
I DID get the full freshmen-15 when i went to college, though. My solution since has been cardiovascular exercise (mostly jogging/running), eat when hungry, don't eat when not hungry (harder than it sounds when you're studying!), and not drinking calories (not filling!). I'll never be down to that pre-freshman weight, but, such is being/becoming a woman. (plus, now I actually have muscles! sweet.)
It took me a while to accept this. If you do what you can for a long period of time, and your body just isn't giving it up, that's how you are. It was frustrating to me to invest in larger pants, but hey, at least I have clothes that fit now!
What does your doctor say your suppossed to be?
Whenever I've been in the States I swell up a LOT because of the salt in prepared foods. Are you eating a lot of prepared, processed vegan foods? That might be it. Where are you in your cycle? Women can bloat a lot just before or just after.
It sounds to me like it isn't an issue with diet, so much as an issue with not being able to get to the gym. As a result, you're eating more calories than your body is using, because your body was in the habit of using them. Same thing happened to me when I stopped going to the gym. Eat slightly smaller portions, or get more exercise (either by going to the gym, or walking around, etc.). Eat until you're satisfied, not full. Stop when you can stop. This may mean serving yourself smaller portions so that you aren't tempted to just finish what's on the plate.

I go up and down a full 5-6lb every month. I also have a seasonal weight gain. I go up and down between summer and winter about 10lb but It's no big deal for me. I don't have to fight to take it off. It just happens naturally for me and a lot of people.
Love, it's natural for women your age to gain weight during that time in our lives. Unfortunately, it's also the time where it starts mattering to us how we look, and the time where we start comparing ourselves to those emaciated coat-hanger women in the magazines. You're still at a healthy weight for your height. I know it's SO hard to love your body, but the sooner you start trying, the better off you'll be.

That is so true. And I know it's hard, but don't listen to your head. It's filled with magazine pictures, and mean comments. Listen to your body. Do you have enough energy to get through the day? Do you suffer from aches? As long as you're eating a varied diet of whole foods, and exercising (but not too much), you should try to accept your body. Really, you'll be much happier.

This is my story too. I went to college at 5'6, 115 lbs. At the end of freshman year I was 130lbs! Imagine my horror!! Anyway, 9 years later, I'm still 5'6 and I still weigh 130lbs. I have yo-yo'd down and up about 5-10 lbs through the years, but I've always felt (physically) best between 125-130 lbs. Mentally, I would totally dig seein the 115's again, but I know that's not going to happen in a healthy manner.
Ugh. My nemesis is eating when I'm not hungry! I just don't understand why it's so hard to say "NO!"
I agree though, make sure you're making time for the gym, even just 3-4 times per week. You are still growing! Make sure you stay strong! :)
I'm 5'5 and about 140 lbs as well. It's taken me a long time to realize it... but I have hot body!!! Sometimes I still suck in my stomach and wish I were built more slightly, who doesn't? But yah... when I'm around you'd watch out 'cause there's dangerous curves ahead! ;) :D
I just want to thank you all so much for your kind words and thoughtful advice. Right now, I'm watching my portion sizes, eating very healthy, and exercising whenever I possibly can. The website fitday.com is a very useful tool and really helps me count calories and see exactly what I ate over the day.
I know I'll always have a bad self image, but, it's really encouraging to hear all of your words and your own stories. Thank you so much everyone.
I really do feel like I can loose these extra pounds I've gained and thanks for all of your advice, I know it will help. I already feel better by reading all of your responses. :)
So, today I've eaten about 1,500 calories (maybe I'll have a little snack later) and I worked out for an hour on the bicycle at the gym (I sweated quite a lot). I feel really good and not hungry at all (i had about 3 cups of homemade lentil soup for dinner, that is filling!) I naturally do eat healthy food, but I think I've just been eating too much of it. For the past week my caloric intake has been less than 2,000 calories (usually around 1,600 per day) and along with exercise I'm sure I can loose those extra pounds in a matter of time. If I don't, then, I guess I'll just have to buy a new pair of jeans....
