NY--I give up

Well I went to the local HFS armed with the latin for the Nutritional Yeast. He went into the back and came back with dry breadmaking yeast! Surely this is not the same thing? He claims it is. I doubt very much that it would taste anything like cheesy. I left it in the shop.
We get brewer's yeast here, but I've been told that isn't quite the thing either.
Sigh.
Bummer. My DH was just refused disability for the second time and now, no NY.

Mine is in a 12 oz yellow can, that somewhat resembles a coffee can, and the brand is KAL. I'm sure there are other brands, esp. since your in Europe. Anyway, it says "Nutritional Yeast Flakes" Saccharomyces Cerevisiae Yeast, Grown on molasses. And it is not an active yeast, so one couldn't make bread or beer with it. In my neck of the woods, it was found by the brewers yeast. Hope this helps; I can't imagine them not having it (If Midland, TX has it, then you should be able to get it everywhere!!)

OK, in my smoking post I put sorry about NY. This is how my brain is working today. I thought because your husband didn't get his disability approved, you couldn't move to New York where I was sure you would be able to find Nutritional Yeast. Oh my!!!!! I think I need to clean! :-)

I'm not sure the Latin name will help you, because they're the same species. It would be like going to the store and saying: "I'd like a pound of Lycopersicon esculentum, please!" They couldn't even tell you what section to look in! Haha...sorry, bad analogy. You can order it on-line, since it's light and lasts a long time. Our health food store sells it. Maybe you could call them?

I have ordered from them in the past but not for a while since I live near several HFS. They say they deliver outside the US but only by airmail. However, nutritional yeast is pretty light, so maybe the postage won't be that much!
The doubt I have about ordering online is that Customs might take a v. dim view of food products entering the country from overseas...especially yeast, it sounds pretty grim, like maybe germ warfare?? (Thinking from a govt point of view) :D :D. Aside from the fact that DH doesn't want me to use his plastic online and I don't have a card. (Please, ladies--don't go there.) Nut yeast, huh? I think this is just one of those things that isn't available here. I'll check out the Spanish vegan society, maybe send him an email. If he produces some stuff in English he either speaks it or has people on tap who do. Malaga is a 3.5 hr train ride away but close enough to call. Thanks for your help.
My packages go through customs as well and the last time I got NY it was opened! Not just the package but the jar of Red Star as well.
So you see what I mean. I walked downtown today and saw a new HFS very veggie, very small, very organic...they had organic veg as well as other stuff and even cosmetics but I didn't have time to go in because I had an appt. I'm sure they'll be much more helpful and prob cheaper than the chain store in my area, who just want to SELL you something, and tend to be a good 50% more expensive than independents...which sounds backwards, but there it is. You'd think with their market share they would undercut the small shops. But just as an example, the exact same scented candle that the chain store sells for $1.50 is available at a smaller, independent shop for 80cents. Freak show.
