a *positive* for animal rights - I was interviewed for a documentary!
when something like this happens, the first thing I want to do is share it with vegweb!
here's my story:
today I was manning the info booth for my campus vegetarian club, to try to recruit new members. a media student from the local college (not my university) approached me, interested in the club's stance on animal abuse. she's making a radio documentary on the topic because she had heard about teens who broke into a house and microwaved a cat to death (http://www.cbc.ca/canada/edmonton/story/2008/01/04/microwave-cat.html). yeah, I know.
anyways, she asked for an interview! she asked questions like why I chose to become veg*n, have I ever lost a pet, how I feel about animals, etc. I think I spoke well, or at least coherently. I don't know if I said enough FOR the animals, but I tried. it was short and sweet.
what really makes me happy about this is that, well, it's proof that animal abuse is a concern for a lot of people. it's proof that animal abuse isn't tolerated - not just by veggies or angry vegans. that's nice to know. :pig: :bear: :cat: :monkey: :chicken:
I don't know if the documentary will be available streaming online. if it is, I'll post the link.
nice job laura. i'm sure you spoke very eloquently for the animals :)
Not only did this story make me sick, it repulsed me that people can be so cruel!
Thank you for speaking up Laura.
One of my biggest worries is someone breaking in to my place and hurting my beloved pets.
To everyone: If you have a freezer, put a lock on it. There have been cases where pets have been placed in the freezer. Not sure what one can do with a microwave.
In the last many years, I heard of someone breaking in to a house and putting lighter fluid on a cockatiel and then putting the poor creature in a microwave.
A story with a much happier ending, teenagers broke in a house and put the schnauzer in the microwave. Thankfully, he had metal ID tags and it shorted out the microwave, He had to have part of one ear amputated and one of his paws was severely damaged.
Not sure what would have happened if the child who lived at the home had not gone home for lunch and scared away the a**holes!
I often think I should put a padlock on Biko, my parrots cage. Then I worry if there was a fire, that the firemen couldn't rescue him. His cage is way to large to fit out of a door. It has to be broken down.
Although a microwave death might be someone fast, it has to be extremely torturous. After all, they are cooking from the inside out.
Think I will be having bad dreams tonight.
Yay Laura! I'm glad you got the opportunity to speak up for animals.

I think that it's terrible that people would do to that to an animal, I really do. I don't understand how somebody could do that, or the motivation behind it.
Side note: Microwaves cook from the outside in.

Oops, that is how much I know about microwaves, I rarely use mine because my holistic vet is dead set against them as was someone I met at one of our Rife sessions. He was some sort of expert on micro waves (his profession) and scared the crap out of the group on using them. How it changed the molecular structure of food etc.
Good job laurabs! I'm sure you did great.
I really appreciate you as a peson for being involved with the documentary. It's always means a lot to me when I hear or see people caring about animals and trying to improve their existence on this planet. I've been taking care of two stray cats outside for almost 6 months now and believe me, if I wasn't feeding them and giving them water, they'd be fending for themselves because no one in this neighborhood could give two shits about them. As nice as it is to know that there's a person like you out there, it's also disheartening and disgusting to know that there are countless other human beings who are not only indifferent but actually involve themselves in the abuse. It's pure evil and it's something I'll never be able to understand. But thanks Laurabs for being a beautiful person. I wish I knew you so I could say that to you.

that's so sweet - thank you! honestly, though, I'm not the one making the documentary. I just gave my opinions and was as supportive of the project as I could be!
I'm a beautiful person... geez, now I'm blushing
Wow :D. I thinks it is really awesome that you are so young and have your stuff together. Good for you. First writing, and now a public voice for animal activism. You rock! ;)
Good job laurabs!!! That's great, I hope we can hear it eventually! Let us know...
