Sometimes, there are "Happy Endings!"

I thought I would share this with everyone since I know most of you love animals.  While I was walking my dog Roy last Saturday, I saw this Pit Bull running loose behind several houses across from a large field(where I was).  Initially, I just figured that he belonged to someone that was also walking close by.  But I kept looking back because something didn't seem right to me about this dog's behavior.  He seemed confused and scared.  Eventually, he disappeared along side of the houses and I was hoping against hope that whoever he belonged to, brought him back in their residence.  About an hour later, I was out in front of my house pruning a tree and sure enough, there was the dog again, only this time a couple were yelling at him to get off their front lawn.(nice, huh?)  At that point, I couldn't take it anymore because I was worried he'd meander into the street and get hit by a car.  So, I went into my house, got Roy's choke collar and leash and walked out behind this guy's house to try and get a hold of the dog.  Needless to say, it wasn't going to come easy, because the dog was scared.  Finally, after much prodding and generally making a fool out of myself in front of the neighbors(I was utilizing most of the infantile voices I could create to make him more relaxed), he came over and let me put the collar and leash on him.  Naturally, as in most cases of stray animals, he had no identification, was covered in dirt, hungry and completely lost.  So I fed him, brushed the dirt from his body and as much as I didn't want to do it, called my local Humane Society.  I was hoping that his owners had called to report him lost but no one had. I walked up and down the street knocking on doors with the dog to see if anyone recgonized him and all I could get was a couple of people saying that they had seen him running loose for over a week.  I knew in my heart that he probably was dumped off because he was so confused.  Well, to make a short story even longer than it has to be, the Human Society came to pick him up and take him about an hour later.  The girl assured me that she would try to find a good home for him because she had a weak spot for Pit Bulls.  Well, this morning when I got on-line to read my e-mails, there was one from the Humane Society telling me that he was adopted by a couple that recently lost their 14 year-old dog to cancer.  Sorry, this was such a long, rambling story but it really made me happy and I thought everyone would appreciate it.  Yes, sometimes there are happy endings!

Oh I'm really happy to hear that. Where I live, if pitbulls (or even pit mixes) are not claimed by their original owners within a certain amount of time, they are automatically put down by the Humane Society b/c of the "predisposition for violence." No chance for adoption by other parties. Glad to hear a happy ending!

Wow.  Your neighbors saw him for a week and didn't do anything.  You saw him for a day and helped him.  I'm really happy Mr. PB found a home.  There's a lesson in this for your neighbors.

Kudos, DJ! You're the best! I know in many places stray PBs are put down because shelters are afraid that people who take them will want to use them for fighting. I'm so glad he got a loving home. This made my day.

That is so awesome!  Thanks so much for taking care of him and helping him to get a home.  I'm sure most people didn't want to bother with him because he was a pit bull  :(  You rock!
