I told some of you guys about my hair shedding problems a while ago on the other boards. Well, I went to get some bloodwork done, and it turns out my ferritin, which is the body's iron stores, is low. So, I am going on prescription iron supplements for a bit. All the other things (hormones, B12) were normal, so hopefully that will sort things out! :)
Good news that you got it figured out. Was it dietary or dumb luck?
I don't really know. I have always had off-and-on problems with anemia, so who knows. I guess I will be more conscientious with my iron intake from now on anyway. Can't hurt.
I remember you talking about your hair before, but when I first read the subject heading I thought, Good Lord, she cut her hair.
What kind of test did they do that lead them to an iron deficiency? I'd like to take a test to make sure my levels are good.
She just referred to it as "ferritin." It was a standard blood draw. I'm not sure if it has any other name.
It is nice to know for sure where all your levels are at.
KissMeKate I'm happy to hear that's all the problem was. I recently started taking an iron supplement (when I remember) and it has really made a difference in my energy level. Especially when I have my period. I read in a runner's world article a while back that runners need more iron than non active people, so that may be part of your problem. (I think you mentioned running before, sorry if I'm confused)
That's right, I do run! Except I haven't been running much lately because of the weather. But with it being lighter outside in the evenings, I might have more chances. I am hoping that the iron will help with my energy as well.
