weird things omnis say in conversation

I've noticed that some meat-eaters who have a lot of veg*n friends precede every food-related story with "Well, I eat meat..."
This really annoys me. Why the qualifier? We get that you aren't vegan. We aren't going to look at you like you have two heads upon your utterance of the phrase "chicken sandwich." Come on now.
What are some other awkward things omnis say when talking to vegans/vegetarians?
Along the same lines as you.....
I have a couple of friends that always mention my veganism when introducing me to people.....I'm totally fine with that, but then they always feel the need to add "but I could never be vegan because I love meat (or cheese) way too much" and then give me this apologetic look......
Ok, fine....I don't care....and I'm pretty sure I never asked you to be vegan anyway....

This. I hate when people do that. What the heck are you supposed to say then? Oh its okay, go eat cows? One day I want to just go insane on someone saying I will not talk to them since they said they love meat, I mean, what do they expect?
I've had people get really in depth with that like "Oh Sarah, close your ears for this one. (then talking to other people) Well see, shes vegetarian (no one understand vegan it seems), and i love meat though, i mean Sarah you can have all the vegetables, but i just want a steak. Well, i'm going to a steakhouse, somewhere you would never find her. She loves her salads." I mean, wtf?
Well, this is more annoying than weird, but the protein thing drives me crazy. My mom always mentions it when my choice of diet comes up like "well, I (my mom) always try to eat protein every day." Like I don't? WTF? I just keep saying, I DO eat protein every day, its just from plants, not animals. Grrrrrrrrrr!
I've recently had several conversations with new coworkers about my veganism. A few people have been ok, but one told me that I looked really good for being vegan, because all the other vegans he knows are emaciated and GRAY. Oh..well, thanks...
Yesterday, I had a pretty much day-long conversation about veganism..which is fine..but it was with 2 smart ass comedy guys..so, I got a lot of questions like, "so...you can't eat squid?!" "What about ranch?" etc. etc.
One girl was genuinely interested, though.
I don't mind, either way. Just funny!
Oh, the most popular questoin: "What DO you eat?!"

you should ask him to introduce you to these other emaciated vegans! either 1. you meet more vegans in your area or 2. you find out that these emaciated vegans don't exist. win win!

I probably would have gotten into it more with him, but... he got fired the next day. :o
I did tell him that they were obviously just not eating the right things/not eating well. He said one is a raw foodist, and "takes care of herself." Hm..GRAY skin usually points to something not quite right.
Ohh! i just remembered, when people list off things asking if i can eat them. People ALWAYS say peanuts!! It always confuses me.
And also along the lines of what AC said, if anything is ever brought up about me being pale or skinny, many people just say "well, you're/shes vegan, its normal." If i bring up that i gained weight since stopping eating meat people just say i'm unhealthy. It seems like a lose lose situation sometimes.
it always makes me laugh when omnis apologize for eating meat, especially if they're eating it in front of me. My omni roommate, especially, always says sorry like fifteen times whenever she is making or eating meat around me. It's not like it's hurting me to watch you grill chicken!

Karma bites like a rabid monkey! :-D
My neighbor friend is constantly saying weird things. I can't get through one conversation with her without her saying SOMETHING about what I can or can't have.
Once she brought me a bag of grape tomatoes she had grown:
"I figured the vegans would love to have some tomatoes!"
Seeing her at the farmer's market:
"I'm here to get some eggs. But you can't eat eggs, right?" (she's knows I don't already)
Her husband offered me a piece of his farmer's market brownie.
Me : "no thanks" :)
the neighbor girl in a hush hushie voice "she doesn't eat eggs".
As if I would automatically want a piece of his brownie otherwise!
Seeing her on a walk:
"I was thinking about you the other day and wondering what you feed Lyle since he can't have milk"
Me: "I breast feed him"
her: oh
It goes on and on. Its too bad because she is my age and has young kids, but it really seems like a barrier for some reason. ???
Yepyepyep. The other thing that is CONSTANT is: "oh, you CAN'T have/eat _______?" I ALWAYS say, "no, I can have ____, but I choose not to."

This.
I absolutely hate it when people tell me what I can and can't have.....I can have whatever I damn well please, but I choose not to.

i agree. i always correct that when people say "can't". its starting to amuse me, the rate at which i have to keep saying "don't" in replace of "can't".
also, people ask the most ridiculous things... "can you eat peanut butter?" so i retort, "whats in peanut butter that i don't want to eat?" "oh i dunno"
people really must be getting more stupid as the years pass on.
here's my advice... don't get mad, just be silly, correct what you want, and live with a light heart!
Doesn't really make me mad (usually) since most people just don't know any better. I'm pretty used to it by now.
Everyone always brings up protein. But the one that go me was when a neighbor once said, " I would worry about how I'm going to get my vitamins".
Yeah, veggies have no vitamins you have to eat meat for that!
The "do you eat fish/chicken?" is a little annoying too.
It's also funny when people seem so surprised when they find out and say "Wow. But you look really healthy. Or you don't look frail or sickly at all. I never would have guessed."
And then there's the thing about "Don't you feel guilty because you are depriving your daughter of all that yummy meat?" Um, no. Do you feel guilty that you're potentially shortening your kid's life and increasing the possibility of heart disease, cancer, obesity, diabetes with all the junk you feed them?
The other thing that is CONSTANT is: "oh, you CAN'T have/eat _______?" I ALWAYS say, "no, I can have ____, but I choose not to."
Ditto.
It bothers me a little when people make it out to be an emotional thing. Like, one of my co-workers was discussing how she is getting meat chickens for her farm, and her daughter (who is perhaps 6) kills them for them. And she was like, "Oh, the vegetarian's probably cringing, aren't you?" No, not really. And I mean, I like this woman, and I understand why she said that, whatever. But it's like, do you think I'm going to start getting all emotional because someone talked about meat? Like I've never heard of such things? Honestly, being vegan isn't some emotional thing for me, it's a logic thing. It makes the most sense to me. It's not like, "Oh booo hooo, I can't stand the thought of blood or death, don't talk about it or I'm going to cry!" I mean, suffering is sad, but give me a break. Not like I've never thought about it before. I just really hate being patronized/babied/condescended to in general. I can manage my emotions, thank you very much. No need to cover my ears.

that would have made me cringe!

Oh, it did, but I mean she didn't have to point it out and be all patronizing about it, you know?

seriously! I don't think you need to be veg*n for that to be cringe worthy. cripes, who the heck lets a 6 yo slaughter an animal?!
Yeah, being veg is odd, jeez!
