Weirdest Vegan Food You Ever Ate?

Just wondering what the weirdest vegan food you have ever eaten once?
I once tried this thing that I thought was just a homemade peanut butter cup, but on the inside it was definitly not peanut butter. It was some kind of hard green vege thing inside. I still dont know what it was. It was pretty bad tasting too.

The first time I made vegan cheesecake, I made it with Chinese tofu. My husband and I agreed that not only was it the worst thing I'd ever cooked, but it was the worst thing either one of us had ever tasted. It tasted so funky and gross, that I felt a little ill after tasting it. I believe it was the Chinese tofu that made it bad--whether Chinese tofu always tastes that way, or I bought a bad batch, I don't know--I never found out because I've steered clear of it ever since.
My husband and I say that, just for fun, we should serve it to guests with a straight face, and watch their expressions as they eat it! (We wouldn't really do that--but the thought of it is really funny!)

Fake eel from the Sunflower restaurant in Vienna, Virginia.

It turns out that fake eel is actually pretty delicious! :)

Canned White Fungus from the Chinese grocery. Not bad tasting, but definitely weird.

BTW- Chinese tofu is the best 8). You got a bad batch :P if it wasn't delicious.

I was going to mention the weird jelly-like vegetable in Sunflower's "Songbird" dish, I can't remember what it's called though. I've never tried their fake eel, I didn't even know they had that on the menu. I have to go several times before I  move (in too weeks!). That place is the BEST restaurant ever! hmmm maybe I'll go tomorrow  8)

I agree, it happens to me too often with tofu. I just bought a block tonight that has a use-by date of August this year and I cut it open and it tastes off, slightly sour ... Definitely always taste test your tofu before you use it in a dish, you never know.

The weirdest thing I've even eaten was just last week when a friend offered me some plum/tamarind candy. It was really sour but not bad at all. Of course, she didn't tell me that you're supposed to SUCK it until after I had CRUNCHED it to pieces in my mouth.

The wierdest thing I've ever eaten was a salted, dried plum--complete with stone. I don't know if they were supposed to be rehydrated and cooked with, but they were shriveled little salt-covered things. I just popped it in my mouth and sucked on it...definitely think they probably should have been soaked. That's what happens when you cruise the Asian grocery on autopilot with no knowledge of the languages involved!  ;D

I love those!!
(you mean someone thinks they're weird? ;))
You ate it properly - they're eaten just like olives that have pits - eat the fruit and spit out the pit. (occasionally, one can find pitted ones)
They're way too salty, but I love them. I eat them till my lips burn!

Well, one time at band camp, (yeah, I'm not kidding... I have a few stories that start that way.), they brought us catered Barbecue, complete with mayonnaise-potato-salad, various dead animals, pork and beans... pretty much the works. So, I ended up eating three sandwiches of barbecue sauce, pickles, and onions, on white wonder bread. *shudder* Honestly though, if it were MY whole wheat bread, they wouldn't have been half-bad. :P After marching for several hours in summer heat, I was ready to eat just about anything.

That was more of a story of desperation though. As far as voluntarily eating something, I'd have to say my weirdest was probably my attempts to "green" up my morning smoothie by replacing my usual frozen peaches or frozen strawberries with... frozen broccoli. I thought "hey, broccoli has kind of a sweetness to it-- maybe if I mix it with a banana, and some vanilla protein powder..."
Yeah, that was absolutely vile. I ALWAYS clean my plate, and I couldn't stomach it. Broccoli does not belong in vanilla & banana smoothies.

lol, mizzoukitten.
i actually love my vegan barbeque sauce and will put it on pretty much anything.  i even use it in lieu of salad dressing, which i guess pretty much destroys my credibility right there.
i don't know if any of you have heard of shirataki?  it's tofu shaped into noodles, which is great for vegans and anyone looking to get more protien.  due to my barbeque fettish, i sometimes drain them and douse them with the stuff, thereby making a barbeque speghetti.
i'll never admit that in public, though.
