What are some everyday things you find beautiful?
I guess this might be considered a spinoff of the How We View Ourselves Thread, but anyways, over the past few months I have begun to take notice and enjoy life's simpler pleasures. Finding something beautiful in everyday life. I try to stay informed about what's going on in the world, but all too often reading the news is a rather depressing daily activity. So, everyday I make it a point to identify one thing, or event I find uniquely beautiful. Then I can tell myself that despite all the depressing news stories that are reported there are this infinite amount of these beautiful I like to hope a majority if not all of the population is enjoying on a daily basis (I know for a fact that isn't true, but I like to think so anyway).
One particular event that has stuck with me happened last week. My campus is in the middle of an urban area, so rarely is there a time in the day when there aren't cars or sirens or something making noise. Except later at night during the week. At about 2 in the morning I was frustrated with thesis and decided to go for a run. I ran up to the track without seeing/hearing a single person, car, or anything. It was just myself and my thoughts. It had cooled down significantly so there was that condensation/steam stuff (definitely not a science person, but you get my point) coming off the ground being illumniated by the lights around campus in the distance, but the track itself and the fields around the track were unlit. I did a full track workout in the cold, dark night all by myself without any interruptions of any kind. Just the sounds of an occasional car passing. When I finished I just felt a great rush come over me. Almost as if it was confirming what I believed that if you take a second and just observe the world around you in your own way you realize how beautiful it really is.
I don't know, there's a lot of these little things I notice on a daily basis that really make me smile. Even though they may seem insignificant to other people. Does anybody else notice these little things?
The first tomato in my garden
The hatched turtle eggs on the way down to our lake
The smell of my grandbaby's skin when she just had a bath
The dew on the leaves in the morning
The baby bunnies nesting under the tree in our front yard
The beautiful magnolia tree out back
The smile on my husband's face
I was just thinking today that one of the most beautiful things is the look on people's faces when they run for a bus and make it. I just love it.
One of the most beautiful sights i have ever seen is along the Mad River in VT. even just driving along, i would look over at the river, and it is this trail of varying shades of emerald, teal and dark greens winding between giant boulders and grasses.
seriously, it would make me cry. and almost run off the road.
i also get a kick out of my dog, everyday.
she sleeps belly to belly or spooning w/ me...her nose in my armpit or the nape of my neck. when i wake up, its like the most exciting thing to her. no matter what i look like, she'll jump all over me, shes short, so its like a little kid on my legs, tripping me as i stumble to the bathroom. and when i get out of the bathroom, its all the more exciting to her!
she also bathes herself...she will pull a washrag from the side of the tub onto the floor, and rub her face and body all over it.
its hilarious. she is my prozac. ;D
Ha! LucidAnne, I also posted about my dog, but my post got eaten right before I clicked submit. I lovelovelove both my pups, but especially my Little Dog (my first adoptee). The love he has for us, it's just amazing. He bit Big Dog on the nose the other day just out of spite, so I grabbed his muzzle and scolded him, and he got all mad at me and snarky and ignored me for five minutes. And after that, he came right back up in my lap and licked my feet like he completely forgave me. The unconditional love, oh it just makes my heart burst. (Okay, I'm waxing poetic here... it's late and I have a few beers under my belt.)
The other thing I love so much about Little Dog is the way he leaps through high grass. We took them hiking the other day, and Little Dog was just in rapture. I don't know particularly what little dogs do in nature, but if my little one lived in nature, he'd probably just jump around in tall grass all day.
Each gust of wind is like a little slap on the face that reminds me that there are plenty of things outside of my control, but are still beautiful and song inducing.
May I say, what a beautiful way of putting it, Camillus... ;)
And as the great comedian Billy Connolly says - there's nothing worse than a warm wind. Cold breezes remind you that you're alive!

Sharway - Cody does the same thing! When he sees tall grass, it's like a drug - he just races at a top sprint threw it, then stops, pops up his head, and those soft fluffy ears are brightly peeking out the tips of the brown grass...sigh. Life as a dog. ::)
:)
The most beautiful sight is the look in my granddog's eyes when we play his favorite game; tug of war. I just got back from visting him and my daughter in Ohio and the worst thing is the way he cries when she drops me at the airport. :'(
someone mentioned that they are committment phobic- me too!!! thats why i feel that some of the most beautiful things involve coupledom;
1. old people holding hands
2. couples cuddling in the streets as though no one is watching
3. familes with kids in the middle all holding hands
4. guys who caress the hair of their pregnant significant others
other stuff;
5. the first snow
6. finding a great pair of shoes in only my size for 70% off
7. willow trees billowing in the wind
8. the end of a very long period
9. my daughter when she says, "mommy you were so right..."

i know it! i never thought i was a little dog person, but they are ever amusing...my dog has this little wiggle to her butt ;D and they are even funnier when they try to assert themselves to big dogs.
i could go on forever about my Midge, but i figure it gets annoying to others (like hearing about kids having their first poop) ;D

When I lived in the city an old man saw me running (sprinting, probably) to catch a bus to no avail. He said "never run after buses or old lovers." ;)
I love that!! ;D

that's absolutely beautiful! don't mind if I quote you now and again, camillus. and please, don't mind if take what you wrote and make something out of it - a poster or stencil it on my wall. I just think that's a beautiful thing to say. it makes me feel fuzzy inside.
...
something else I find beautiful: my grandmother's house. it's up north, in a forest on the edge of a little lake. my grandmother bakes, cleans, and cooks. it's homey. I feel like I'm taken care of when I'm there. and she has cats. I like purring cats.
...
this is a great thread. reading the posts is inspiring.
and she has cats. I like purring cats.
Oh yeah! The purr of a cat... so special... and every one a slightly different purr. :)

Well thank you Laura, and you Heliamphora. :)
I know it's corny... (and lovingly motherly)... but everyday I look at my cats, Buddy and Tigger, find them absolutely beautiful - or should I say handsome? They're like my children, my "boys", I just can't help it! A love only pet owners/animal lovers can understand...teehee!
I have another one! soy delicious ice cream on sale... and having a coupon for it too!
yum
The most beautiful thing in this drought-ridden country is the sound of rain. Real rain!
Think kindly of Spain. Galicia, in the north, usually has recieved 200 litres per sq meter by this time of year (can't compute that to inches of rainfall, don't know how). So far, they've only recieved 3 litres total. So you see...less than 2 percent.
Send us good vibes, and clouds, if you've got em.
The sound of Rain ..
The smell of freshly cut grass..
Dew on Flower...
Walking through a garden...
A tree with its splendor at midnight.. especially weeping willows
A simple "I love you"
The stars in the sky
..Especially a falling one
A beautiful sunset..
Or awakening to a lovely sunrise
A walk in the park
Anything and everything that reminds me of nature basically=)
My daughter is always singing: "Rain, Rain, Go to Spain!" so I will tell her to keep it up!!!!
(This is from an Ant and Bee book where they travel the world in search of Bee's missing umbrella) :)
