what is up with my face?!?!?

ok.

when i was reading up on being vegan earlier in the summer, i came across some stories of people who had gone vegan and how it had changed their lives for the better....

almost everyone said that they lost weight and their skin cleared up....one girl even said that her skin was "glowing" since she cut out dairy....

so i was really excited about seeing my body/skin change for the better. my skin has never been "bad" really, it's never been perfect, but i have never been considered to be a pizza face either. but i was thinking that all my little blemishes would probably go away in a month or 2.

well, i have been a faithful vegan since the middle of july, and my skin is getting WORSE! it looks worse now than it ever has. i don't understand. i wash my face at night before bed and in the morning when i shower....i don't ever wear concealer of foundation...just organic loose powder and blush...

so WHY is this happening???

if anyone has any ideas/suggestions, PLEASE let me know! it's driving me nuts!

thanks!!!!

You never rinse it? I stopped washing my face too, but I still rinse with water. I've tried EVERYTHING there is to try to help my skin, but I've had some form of acne since 7th grade. Annoying. I wear bareescentuals too. No rinsing huh....I guess I'll try that.

Nope, I don't rinse my face.  Are you rubbing your face when you rinse?  Or,are you just splashing on water?

I rinse mine. once or twice a day, I just splash it with some water a few times. And my skin is clear. I think working up a good sweat once a day, or every other day really helps clean out your pores.

I agree - sweating is great for your skin!

Kind of between a rub and a splash. More like a splash..except if I'm washing off makeup...then it's more of a rub.
I sweat all the time.
Trust me, I've tried most everything. I'll do the no rinse thing..
You leave makeup on, though?

my mind is a little blown with the no rinse thing.  i'm gonna have to wrap my head around that one

my advice is to make sure you're getting all the nutrients you need.  take a multivitamin and a b12 tab every day, and try to work a lot of different types of fruit and veg into your diet.
and don't eat pasta or bread made with refined grains.
then again, that's a vegan's advice for just about any malady

same here, can't imagine not rinsing my face! But if it works - that's great!
My skin changed so much for the better when I cut most refined foods, especially sugar and stress plays a MAJOR role.
Almost 2 years ago we moved to another state and into a house we had only seen a couple of times, seemed a nice quiet area. Well, once we moved there we noticed right away that this was a cut through and the traffic during the day was NUTS. I got so stressed out from all the noise that my skin started breaking out like crazy. A year ago we moved and voila - face calmed down and is so much better.

ha ha! yeah. it makes sense though!

purpledancer,
as far as the no wash/no rinse thing goes....i don't know if i could do that! i do see your point with the whole concept though....my face gets SUPER greasy if i don't wash it...did yours do that at first and then even out?

If I where makeup, it is the Bare Escentuals face powder & blush.  I don't where eye makeup.  Yep, I just leave it on.

To clarify - I don't think there is anything inherently wrong with rinsing your face, I just don't do it.  I have no reason to.  If I was in a dirt storm or something, I guess I would rinse off the dirt  :).

I don't remember, but I don't think my skin got more oily at first.  It is as it should be now.  Do you mean it gets super greasy because you skip a day?  When you wash your face, you strip it of all its natural oils.  Then, it compensates by producing extra oil.  So, it may be that your skin gets super greasy because you wash it.

I'm obviously not a skin expert.  I'm just the type of person who questions everything. And so, I questioned why I was washing my face to begin with & could not come up with any good reason.  So I stopped & I look better & get to sleep in later  ;)b.

Drink lots of water! Water is very good for your skin. Also make sure that you are eating a lot of high water content foods such as fruits and veggies. That should make your skin better in no time.

ha. All of this is making me kinda sad..

I was told by many people that giving up dairy would clear up my skin. Soon after I gave up dairy my skin got ten times worse, I had developed cystic acne where I had never had acne problems before. I then researched it a little and found out that sever e acne can be a symptom of a mild soy allergy. When I gave up dairy I had switched to soy milk and had upped my intake of things containing soy.

I gave up all soy products and my skin began to clear up as a result. If you have been  eating more soy that you used to since going vegan this may be the cause. I would reccomend switching to almond or rice milk and avoiding all soy for awhile and see if your skin improves. It's weird it's random but my doctor confirmed that a soy allergy when it is non-life threatening can manifest as acne

I'm going to have to jump on the my face cleared up after I became vegan bandwagon. My skin looks great and I only get pimples around that time of month and there's really nothing I can do about that. But I do wash my face, if I don't I start to get blackheads like crazy and my skin gets super greasy. I think this is probably because I'm one of those people that unconsciously touches my faces ALL the time. I couldn't go with out washing my face.

The weird thing is, I only have the occasional face pimple but out of the blue my back has completely broken out and no matter what I do it pops up every week. Maybe my pimples decided to move and take up residence on my back?  ;D I haven't had back break outs since my early to mid teens. What is up with that?

My acne got worse after I went vegan, but I think I know why.  When I was vegan I had a skin care regime with products that worked.  I had been using these same products since early high school and it was such a habit, that I don't think I realized how well they actually worked.  When I went vegan I of course switched away from the other stuff and started buying vegan skincare products and the natural stuff I've been using just doesn't cut it .  I saw on another thread people talking about benzoyl peroxide that they get from www.acne.org.  I really want to try that....my old product was benzoyl peroxide, so I'm pretty sure that was key for what worked so well for me.  Does anyone know lif the www.acne.org stuff is vegan-I can't find anything saying for sure...

you know, i never thought about that. i am eating more soy. not truck-loads or anything, but on average....definitely more. i will get rid of soy and see if that helps. thanks!

and i'm going to go raw for a bit and drink only water!  ;)b ;)b ;)b
damn it, i will get rid of this crap!

Stopping soy improved my skin too.

I can also see how the idea of not washing your face might work. We are stripping the natural oils from our skin daily when we wash our face and this only makes our skin react by producing more oil. Kind of like the people who get addicted to chapstick, but in the opposite way.

It's going ok for me. I haven't washed/rinsed for a day, night, day, night, day...so far. I haven't had any huge, new ones. I left my bareescentuals on from yesterday..and that seems ok. I'll keep on!

It's ok, AC. I have been vegan for a few years, drink a crapton of water, never touch my face, and never really eat flours. Yet, in the last 2-ish months my skin has seemed all pissed off. I don't know why.. I will cut out soy and see how that works. I've been having a lot of tofu lately whereas I didn't use to, so maybe..

My face has never really "broken out", but when I eat too much fat (i.e. a bunch of nuts or peanut butter) I'll get a zit or two. Or in the past I have, not for a while. Maybe watch how much fat you consume--it is the easiest way to get calories, but not really the healthiest.

So, the no washing thing is going ok. I don't take showers very often anyway, but I've just kind of let the water run on my face. My face isn't really better or worse...so I'll stick with it. Do you rinse your face after you sweat?
