What the World Eats (NVR)

Interesting pictorial from Time.

I found the North Carolina family's diet most frightening....there were very few vegetables and fruits in the picture.

And a lot of fast food products.

i agree - i cannot read japanese.  for all i know those packages could've said "paula deen's krispy kreme casserole".  i doubt it.. but still.

Fascinating, enlightening, and in the case of some of the less affluent families, amazing. I cannot imagine feeding a family of 12 on $68.53 a week, or even one person much less a family on $1.23 a week. However, I don't feel so bad about how much bookpapa and I spend per week compared to some of the affluent families. And I was surprised to notice that the North Carolina family, even with their primarily fast food meals were not obese.

I love these photo essays. There is also a similar one that shows families in their yards with all their belongings, including their furniture. It's also very telling.

Ecuador looked pretty good to me...

But am I insane? Granted, my family is pretty small (me, husband, and the dogs), but we spend maybe like $60 on groceries for the week... The American/European countries were exorbitant compared to my grocery budget!

I am glad that they had two on there from Amaerica, to show that not all americans eat like the North Carolina does.  My German friend I knew said that before he came over, he though Americans pretty much lived off of fast food, he didn't think Americans cooked much, or ate healthy...but I changed his views!

I could go with the Mexican family, except for all that Coca Cola!  :o  I'll take the German family's beverage selection, thank you.  ;)

My mom gave me the book that those pictures are from for Christmas a year or two ago, it is really interesting!  I am pretty sure that the book has some writeups about the families and why they eat what they do etc, although it has been a while since I looked at it

I know many of us shop groceries only once a week. Maybe we could post photos of what we bought too?

That really is a great idea!  I'll have to break out the digital next time I shop.  I'd love to see what everyone else buys (and spends).  I tend to be a high spender at Wild Oats and I've been trying to lower my bill.  I'm sure I could take a lesson from some of you guys in staying within my grocery budget.

Okay, now I have to finally break down and buy a digital camera.

Based on those families, I wouldn't mind living in Cairo or Tingo.

that could be cool... but i tend to not buy food "for the week" but instead have staples i always have and then i replenish them as needed  :D

i can post a picture of the insides of my fridge.... you can see all 7 jars (according to DR) of nut butter that lurk in there.....

We could add pictures of the fridge as well. Hmm.. My shopping day is on Monday, I'll have to try and remember to take pictures.

I couldn't believe all the soda and fast food!  :o  Did you see the KFC in the pic of the family from Beijing (I think it was beijing anway).  Oh and the soda!!!  Ack!

I shop on Sundays. I will try to remember to take a picture.  I've found that I spend less by making one weekly trip than individual trips through the week.  I usually spend between $25-40 depending on what staples I have to replace.

I've thought about taking pictures of my trips to the farmers market before with my two giant sacks of food with a "look what I got for $13" caption (usually when one of the posts about how expensive it is to be a veg*n pops up).

I usually get home, unload and get distracted by an animal demanding attention....
