What's with "!!!1!"?? (obviously NVR)

OK; this is a stupid question, I know. I've lived in Europe for over 25 years and I am so out of the loop, but I have to ask somebuddy! On a lot of websites (not least icanhascheezburger), I often see a phrase ending with this: !!!1!

Does the "1" have a special meaning? Is it a tv/movie/song reference? It is making me crazy. Please enlighten this aging technotoddler.

Hi Yabbitgirl!

I think it is just because when you type exclamation marks, sometimes the finger slips, and you get the 1 instead, as they are the same key.

Its a techy thing, kind of like an inside joke, because it really does happen quite often, but now people do it on purpose.

oh yeah, I do it now, but only when I'm over-emphasizing a sort of...how shall I say....myspacey-hyperactive-chatspeak-using-teenybopper tone...

example:
"Like, Z0MG!!!!!!11one!"

and yes, I realize that the "o-n-e" sequence is not a natural slip-up when typing a bunch of exclamation marks, but that is reserved especially for mocking the aforementioned "tone."

The more jaded and experienced of gamers like to mock the hyperactive chatspeak occasionally.  Thats when you will find a nice "ROFL!!1!eleventy!1"

Typically it is either a slip or a specific jab (most noticeable with the one or other typed out number).

Heh, I wondered about the 'ZOMG' thing, but I think i just got it - it's next to the left Shift key, of course.  ::)

You can ask me any leetspeak question... we're online gamers in my household and it's more automatic for us than normal typing anymore.

n00bs = noobs = newb = newbie
Anyone new to either a game or the internet or whatever it is.

And to pwn is to own, right?

(In a prissy, academic voice) I believe my beloved Miss Austen would translate "pwn" as "to hoist one with one's own petard."

So there. ;)

This is correct!  When you pwn or pwnd someone you won and they lost horrifically.  Be it in a FPS, MMORPG or Console.  Heck, you can pwn people on msg boards too.  But that wouldnt be polite!
