What's your oldest piece of clothing that you still wear?

I know VWers are recyclers at heart; we buy second hand, we rescue stuff from skips and tips. We make do and mend.

You know how it is: that comfy old pair of jeans that you've had since highschool; that battered pair of slippers that you just can't throw out; the sweater that's getting ragged and ratty but makes you feel loved whenever you wear it.

I have a couple of pairs of jeans that I've had since about 1994 and still love. Fortunately they have worn well and I'm thin enough now to wear them again!

Then I put on my same old pale-blue cotton/polyester blend turtleneck sweater this morning. I realised that it was one I had inherited from my Mom. She bought it when she started working in the hospital kitchens...when I was in highschool. I must have been about 14, which would be, what? About 1973. She wore it to work for years, then wore it around home...and gave it to me in the 80s. I've been wearing it ever since then. They didn't worry about "biodegradable" synthetics in the 70s. It's still going strong and still looks nice. I've got its white twin here somewhere yet, too.

The saddest thing was when my MASH t-shirt (1979) ripped apart in the washer. Bye-bye, 4077.

What's your oldest piece of clothing?

hmmmm my clothes are all pretty new since i gained a lot of weight 2 years ago and had to buy new clothes. but i buy stuff from thrift stores all the time, and i guess those are pretty old. lol. my tacky christmas sweater is probably the oldest

I have a vintage M*A*S*H shirt I bought at the REI in Seattle, Washington when we were on a family vacation in the late '70s.  I always bought over-sized clothes back then, so it still fits, but I'm afraid to wear it because I don't want it to fall apart.  A few years ago, Target sold M*A*S*H shirts and I bought three, but don't wear them because 1) I don't wear print shirts and 2) it's not the same because it's not vintage.

I have several shirts I still wear from the '80s that I had or were hand-me-downs from my sister.  Everything was so oversized then that I can still wear all of my shirts, it's just that they're form-fitting now.

I still wear the tank top I posted a picture of in 2009:

I wear a mostly button-up shirts and nice jeans, so most of my clothes usually don't make it more than 2 or 3 years. I think the oldest piece of clothing is a t-shirt that says FUCK TRANCE I bought in 2001. I wear it to bed sometimes, it's my favorite.

I wore a shirt the other day that I think might be the oldest that I still wear, and it's getting holes. I feel pretty confident that I got it in 2003, when I was in seventh grade. I wore it in my senior pictures in high school.

I'm sad that I'm going to have to give it up soon. It doesn't look great anymore, and it's getting fairly ragged.

I think my oldest thing is this tie dye shirt that was my brothers before it was mine, then my moms, and I think my dads at some point?
I have no idea how old it is. SO MANY HOLES IN IT. It is fantastic.

I have a few tops of my sister's from when she was a tween that I wear.. one's a junior mints tee that's strangely long but not wide, so I wear it as a dress with leggings or tall socks on lazy days. I also wear a lot of t-shirts from 7ish years ago when I was in middle school. And one pair of white tights that I have had since I was in ballet when I was very little. I have NO idea how my legs manages to still fit in them, but I have cut off the feet to accommodate for length.

I wear a plaid shirt that is super comfortable that my mother bought in 1969 to wear to art school.
And here it is, 2011, and I've been wearing it in art school for 2 years now. I <3 that shirt.

and i'm assuming anything from the thrift store does not count (before we got it) because we wouldn't know how old it is.. yeah?

Unless you got it from someone and know how long they had it, no, it doesn't really count. Or like if you've had it since forever, and bought it used before that.

Another one: I am still wearing an alpaca sweater that I knitted in about 1987. It's worn down to the weft but still warm. Or at least I think it's still warm...maybe it's my own thoughts that warm me. It's practically transparent with wear, like wearing a cobweb. Yeah I know, animal fibres aren't vegan, but this sweater was special for reasons I won't go into here except to say that the yarn itself was a very special gift. Every time I wear it I feel wrapped in that person's love, even though they are no longer part of my world.

My oldest shirts are from my mom-balloon festival tshirt from 1981 and Chicago shirt from 1984..both with tons of holes. I've worn the balloon shirt more than any other shirt and it's almost unwearable.

My 2006 Nine Inch Nails tour t-shirt. It was my first Nine Inch Nails concert (and my life has never been the same). I was also 35 pounds heavier then, so the shirt is now baggy. I save it for wear around the house.

I have so much trouble getting rid of old clothes, even when I don't wear them much. But sometimes I wear this shirt I got in Liverpool back in 2000

And I love this old Marimekko shirt that was my mom's. I was wearing it the other day when we were videochatting and she said, "Does that fit you? You're bigger than me and it fits you? Maybe it would still fit me." WTF mom, that is so rude. You gave it to me because it didn't fit you anymore and it obviously fits me and it's mine now. It has holes in it, but I don't care.

oh man I can't hold a candle to you guys. My oldest thing is a shirt from 2000, which somehow looks exactly the same as when I got it (and I wear it fairly often).

The next closest I have is a shirt from 2006! Evidently I only buy cheaply-made clothing. :p

well, i didn't really want this to count, because i'm adding years of someone elses use, but the sweater i wear almost ever single night was my moms old sweater and she got it in the late 70s, i believe.

I realized the shirt I mentioned was other peoples so I actually haven't had it that long.
The oldest shirt I have is from 4th grade, I don't wear it though. so. hmm. I just got rid of a bunch of things so I'd need to think more. I know I have stuff I wear from middle school at least though.
