You took the words right out of my mouth, KissMeKate. We have had a little mouse friend in our house, my mom set the traps, and I've had to trip them. I just can't stand it :( So this was helpful to me as well, thank you!

Peppermint oil!!! A few drops of peppermint oil on a cotton ball placed in corners, the back of cupboards, cracks around doors or windows will keep them away.
My husbands shop is next to a specialty dog food maker (read open bins of grain), behind a bottle return-it center (read tasty things to drink) and in the winter his is the only unit that's heated (read a nice place to sleep) so we had plenty of mice last year. The traps were working way too well :'( until I started with the peppermint oil! We haven't caught one (or seen any evidence of one) since.

http://www.antonline.com/images/v18/072868130076.jpg If possible, try to avoid getting a trap like this with big air holes in the door. Many deer mice at my house have chewed their way out of them using the holes as starter points. I have had success with traps called "mice cubes" which have a swinging square door. And check the traps frequently! Mice have a tendency to pee and crap while they're in them. :rat:

I would like to take a moment in this thread to officially declare my undying love for KMK.
Reasons (in no particular order): 1) She's a math teacher 2) She's vegan 3) She's gorgeous 4) I think she likes Star Wars 5) While this probably isn't the reason she is going to Home Depot, I'm going to go ahead and assume she is going there to check out tools and power tools and to buy wood and hardware to build something. Because that's why I like to go there. The other 4 are enough by themselves, but this was the straw that broke the camel's back. :)>>>
P.S. I second the Humane Society idea, my friend got rid of a pesky raccoon that way.
P.P.S. Was I the only person who thought "Human Mouse Trap?? Wouldn't that just be a Human Trap? or a really big Mouse Trap?" upon first reading the title of this thread?

Lowe's did it. I almost missed it among the deadly ones with the disgusting dying mouse pictures on the front, but I found one.

Haha, you're sweet. I went to Home Depot (Lowe's actually) to buy a lock/doorknob to install on one of my doors.
I hate to break it to you, dear, but I've never seen Star Wars. I am a hardcore fan of LOTR, but that's about it.

Nothing like driving down the road with a box of mice and letting them out. Not sure how it happened but I caught a momma mouse and all her baby's. They seem to be very grateful that I don't kill them although not happy being put out in the cold. I am going to try the cotton ball thing with peppermint oil. Have not seen any mice in my place in a few weeks.

doing your own home improvement/fixin' is just as good.

Ahh, i thought a previous comment of yours was partly about the Jedi thing, but it must've only been about the math thing. LOTR is also awesome. And I am willing to help remedy your not having seen star wars. i can send you copies of the dvds, or if you happen to use a computer and an hdtv, i can send you 1080p rips of them.
This goes for anyone (within a reasonable number, I guess I should say), give me an address and I will mail you a copy of the trilogy. it's like witnessing or being a missionary or something, but for Star Wars.
She's mine.
I don't see no ring! Just 'cause you got her pregnant don't mean you control her! <insert finger-snapping smiley here>

Is there a seed and feed supply store anywhere near you? I think my parents found some there.
The big box stores like Home Depot and Lowes carry them.
animal control should lend you some. You trap them, let them out elsewhere, and then return the traps.
If you can't find one locally, Pangea sells them:
